The landscape consists of a crescent of low chalk hills, the Yorkshire Wolds, surrounded by the low-lying fertile plains of Holderness and the Vale of York. The Humber Estuary and North Sea mark its southern and eastern limits. Archaeological investigations have revealed artefacts and structures from all historical periods since the last ice age. There are few large settlements and no industrial centres. The area is administered from the ancient market and ecclesiastical town of Beverley. Christianity is the religion with the largest following in the area and there is a higher than average percentage of retired people in residence.
Candidates were elected unopposed at most of the elections throughout its existence as a constituency; the only contested elections were in 1837, 1868 and 1880, on each of which occasions two Conservative candidates defeated a single Whig or Liberal.
Arnold is a hamlet in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England in an area known as Holderness. It is situated approximately 9 miles (14km) north of Hull city centre and 6 miles (10km) east of Beverley town centre. It lies to the west of the A165 road which by-passes it.
Yorkshire (/ˈjɔːrkʃər/ or /ˈjɔːrkʃɪər/) is a historic county of Northern England and the largest in the United Kingdom. Due to its great size in comparison to other English counties, functions have been undertaken over time by its subdivisions, which have also been subject to periodic reform. Throughout these changes, Yorkshire has continued to be recognised as a geographical territory and cultural region. The name is familiar and well understood across the United Kingdom and is in common use in the media and the military, and also features in the titles of current areas of civil administration such as North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and East Riding of Yorkshire.
Within the borders of the historic county of Yorkshire are areas which are widely considered to be among the greenest in England, due to the vast stretches of unspoiled countryside in the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors and to the open aspect of some of the major cities. Yorkshire has sometimes been nicknamed "God's Own County" or "God's Own Country".
In the redistribution which took effect for the 1868 general election the two divisions were redistributed into three. Eastern West Riding of Yorkshire was created and the Northern and Southern divisions modified. Each of the three divisions returned two members.

Guide to East Yorkshire
East Yorkshire is a fascinating area - at one end of its coastline it has the shifting sandbar of Spurn Point and at the other end the 400ft high chalk cliffs of Flamborough Head. Both are a bird watchers' paradise. In between there are small seaside towns of Hornsea and Withernsea - under threat from coastal erosion. The main coastal town is Bridlinton. Inland are the rolling chalk hills of the Wolds. the county town is Beverley - a mini York, with is winding streets, Minster and Bar Gate. The film ends as Goole - a purpose built port dating to 1826. The main city is Hull - so important, that we have a seperate film on that!

GOOLE: East Riding of Yorkshire Parish #46 of 172
Time for a port town twinned with Złotów in Poland. The settlement was not recorded in the Domesday Book, rather its first mention in any literature came in 1362, when it was referred to as “Gulle”. A lot of its history can be attributed to that man Cornelius Vermuyden and for good reason. As we’ve learned in previous episodes, he diverted the River Don northwards to the River Ouse in 1626.
His work would result in the Dutch River, the channel which I stood on in the Rawcliffe episode in Rawcliffe Bridge. It makes its way in a dead straight line from there into the River Ouse. It, together with the Aire and Calder navigation which would come later, were navigable for barges so that coal from the South Yorkshire Coalfield could be transported to seagoing vessels.

The original settlement was that part of the town now known as “Old Goole”, and it’s got its own separate section in this video. Now it is a town with about 20,000 inhabitants. It has seen rapid growth in just 200 years. Whilst the docks and the shipment of goods from here is and will always be important, it has much more than that these days.
An industrial estate has a glassworks and a huge Tesco distribution centre. The arrival of these employers resulted in the creation of hundreds of new jobs. If there are any Londoners out there, you might well have travelled on a Piccadilly line tube train recently. Those trains are manufactured on that industrial estate as well!
Demographically, this is a town that’s still growing. Welcome to GOOLE.

The Reed Group East Riding Stages was back for 2023 and spectacular as ever! Dubbed by some to be East Yorkshire's take on the Ypres Rally the event saw crews tackle 45 miles of challenging flat, fast Tarmac! A bumper entry of 146 cars did battle across the day with last year's winner David Henderson coming out on top once again.
