Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineers (AVRE) is the title given to a series of armoured Military engineering vehicles operated by the Royal Engineers (RE) for the purpose of battlefield engineer support. These vehicles have been either purpose-built or post-production modifications of existing tank-based armoured vehicles. A common feature of most AVREs to date has been the retention of a large calibre main gun or its replacement by a weapon of a larger calibre. The most recent vehicle to be called an AVRE is the Challenger 2-based Trojan; however this vehicle breaks the trend by not having a large calibre weapon. With the multitude of functions now required of the RE, new vehicles have come into use which are given alternative names, but which are to all intents and purposes, AVREs.
History
World War One
The first vehicle that can be considered to be an AVRE is the Heavy RE tank developed shortly after World War I by Major Giffard LeQuesne Martel RE. This vehicle was a modified Mark V tank. Two support functions for these AVREs were developed: bridging and mine clearance. The bridging component involved an assault bridge, designed by Major Charles Inglis RE, called the Canal Lock Bridge, which had sufficient length to span a canal lock. Major Martel mated the bridge with the tank and used hydraulic power generated by the tank's engine to manoeuvre the bridge into place. For mine clearance the tanks were equipped with 2 ton rollers.
The Corps of Royal Engineers, usually just called the Royal Engineers (RE), and commonly known as the Sappers, is one of the corps of the British Army. It is highly regarded throughout the military, and especially the Army.
It provides military engineering and other technical support to the British Armed Forces and is headed by the Chief Royal Engineer. The Regimental Headquarters and the Royal School of Military Engineering are in Chatham in Kent, England. The corps is divided into several regiments, barracked at various places in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and around the world.
History
The Royal Engineers trace their origins back to the military engineers brought to England by William the Conqueror, specifically Bishop Gundulf of Rochester Cathedral, a talented military engineer, and claim over 900 years of unbroken service to the crown. Engineers have always served in the armies of the Crown; however, the origins of the modern corps, along with those of the Royal Artillery, lie in the Board of Ordnance established in the 15th century.
The Royal Engineers Association Football Club is an association football team representing the Corps of Royal Engineers, the "Sappers", of the British Army. In the 1870s it was one of the strongest sides in English football, winning the FA Cup in 1875 and being Cup Finalists in four of the first eight seasons of the competition, including three of the first four. The Engineers were pioneers of the "combination game", where team-mates passed the ball to each other rather than kicking ahead and charging after the ball.
History
The club was founded in 1863, under the leadership of Major Francis Marindin. Sir Frederick Wall, who was the secretary of The Football Association 1895–1934, stated in his memoirs that the "combination game" was first used by the Royal Engineers A.F.C. in the early 1870s. Wall states that the "Sappers moved in unison" and showed the "advantages of combination over the old style of individualism".
Contemporary match reports confirm that passing was a regular feature of the Engineers' style. An 1869 report says they "worked well together" and "had learned the secret of football success – backing up"; whereas their defeated opponents had "a painful want of cooperation". In February 1871 against Crystal Palace it is noted that "Lieut. Mitchell made a fine run down the left, passing the ball to Lieut. Rich, who had run up the centre, and who pinched another [goal]"
An armoured (or armored) fighting vehicle (AFV) is a combat vehicle, protected by strong armour and generally armed with weapons, which combines operational mobility, tacticaloffensive, and defensive capabilities. AFVs can be wheeled or tracked. It is not uncommon for AFVs to be simply referred to as "armour".
Armoured fighting vehicles are classified according to their intended role on the battlefield and characteristics. This classification is not absolute; at different times different countries will classify the same vehicle in different roles. For example, armoured personnel carriers were generally replaced by infantry fighting vehicles in a similar role, but the latter has some capabilities lacking in the former. There may also be hybrid vehicles, such as the Stryker family of AFVs; the M1128 Mobile Gun System, an armoured car which mounts a large 105mm gun normally used in tank destroyers, but can theoretically be reconfigured to the M1126 Infantry Carrier Vehicle.
Light Armoured Wheeled Vehicle (LAWV) a technology demonstrator has been developed as Armoured Personnel Carrier for reconnaissance and counter insurgency and riot control Operations.

The match, which will be attended by FA Chairman David Bernstein, comes ahead of The FA's 150th anniversary celebrations across 2013.
One of the most exciting things for all fans will be the presence of the first ever Cup -- by the kind permission of its owner, West Ham United Joint-Chairman David Gold.
The Cup -- a replica of that presented in 1872 that was made after the original was stolen from a football outfitter's shop in Birmingham in 1895 -- will be displayed in the Long Room alongside the modern day trophy, loaned by The FA for the day. In return for a small charitable donation, fans will be able to have their picture taken with the historic silverware.
The build-up to the game will feature a number of special 'cup final' touches with a mezzo-soprano singing Abide With Me before the Band of the Corps of Royal Engineers play the national anthem. The two sides will then line-up to be presented to a party of dignitaries including Mr Bernstein and Surrey CCC Chairman Richard Thompson.
There will also be an FA Cup legend in attendance, with former Coventry, Wimbledon and Wales manager Bobby Gould -- the mastermind of one of the most famous Cup victories in history -- managing Wanderers on the evening.
Gould has already run a full session with the side and will be bringing his characteristically competitive attitude to a friendly match that is sure to have a historic edge. You can listen to his verdict on the occasion by clicking here.
The main event will kick off at 7pm but the ground will stage a full afternoon of football beforehand with a Lambeth schools' tournament, an exhibition match by the Lambeth Tigers and a women's friendly match between South London WFC and Battersea and Wandsworth WFC. The gates will open at 2.30pm.
All proceeds from the event will be donated to charity, with the Royal British Legion, the Haig Housing Trust and Lambeth Tigers FC all set to benefit.
Tickets are £10 for adults and £1 for U16s. All military personnel wearing uniform -- who are able to show a valid ID card -- will be allowed in free of charge. Groups of ten people can attend for a combined price of £50.00.

The first ever FA Cup Final will be replayed at the Oval on Wednesday -- with Wanderers and the Royal Engineers renewing a rivalry that has simmered for over 140 years.
As well as the rematch that has been over a century in the making, the day will also feature some amazing FA Cup touches, ensuring all fans of the world's greatest club competition will enjoy a day to remember.

At last, the much-anticipated day arrived and Wanderers took on their age-old rivals, the Royal Engineers. Royal Engineers hoped to make amends for their defeat in 1872. Wanderers were hoping not to lose by as vast a margin as the two clubs' last encounter in 2010, when the Sappers won 9-3. Only one team would prove to be satisfied. Watch on to see who it could be.
