The Arkavati (also written Arkavathi, Arkavathy) is an important mountain river in Karnataka, India, originating at Nandi Hills of Chikkaballapura district. It is a tributary of the Kaveri, which it joins at 34km south of Kanakapura, called Sangama in Kannada, after flowing through ramanagara and Kanakapura. The river drains into the Chikkarayappanahalli Lake near Kanivenarayanapura. Kumudavathi and Vrishabhavathi rivers are tributaries to this river. It forms Chunchi falls near Haroshivanahalli.
The river is used by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board to provide 135 million litres of drinking water per day to the city of Bengaluru, or about 20% of all the city's water. As it is filtered in the nearby mountain aquifer, the water is fresh and crystal clear. The water is taken from two reservoirs built on the river, the Hesaraghatta (or Hesseraggatta), which was built in 1894, and the Tippagondanahalli Reservoir (or T G Halli), which was built in 1933.

Arkavathy: A Changing Waterscape [English]
TG Halli Reservoir on the Arkavathy River to the west of Bangalore was once the main source of water to Bangalore. Today, both inflows into the river and catchment tanks are drying.
Climatic factors alone, cannot explain the steep decline. ATREE's research shows that groundwater pumping and eucalyptus plantations play a major role in explaining the decline. When we examine the underlying causes of these changes, we find that farmers in the catchment are responding to pressures of urbanisation. Rainfed farming is no longer viable, farmers either dig deeper and go in for commercial crops or place their land under eucalyptus and switch to other occupations.
Ultimately, this is a story of absent or fragmented institutions. Ground and surface water are a single interconnected resource and must ...

Ground and surface water are a single interconnected resource and must be managed as such. We need watershed institutions that can regulate and allocate the available water resources in a fair and transparent fashion.

Ground and surface water are a single interconnected resource and must be managed as such. We need watershed institutions that can regulate and allocate the available water resources in a fair and transparent fashion.
For the location of TG Halli Resevoir and the Arkavathy Catchment area, please read and refer to Page 8 in the document. http://www.atree.org/sites/default/files/Water_management_in_Arkavathy_basin_A_situation_analysis.pdf
