Arctic exploration is the physical exploration of the Arctic region of the Earth. It refers to the historical period during which mankind has explored the region north of the Arctic Circle. Historical records suggest that humankind have explored the northern extremes since 325 BC, when the ancient Greek sailor Pytheas reached a frozen sea while attempting to find a source of the metal tin. Dangerous oceans and poor weather conditions often fetter explorers attempting to reach polar regions and journeying through these perils by sight, boat, and foot has proven difficult.
First attempts
Ancient Greece
Some scholars believe that the first attempts to penetrate the Arctic Circle can be traced to ancient Greece and the sailor Pytheas, a contemporary of Aristotle and Alexander the Great, who, in c. 325 BC, attempted to find the source of the tin that would sporadically reach the Greek colony of Massilia (now Marseille) on the Mediterranean coast. Sailing past the Pillars of Hercules, he reached Brittany and even Cornwall, eventually circumnavigating the British Isles. From the local population, he heard news of the mysterious land of Thule, even farther to the north. After six days of sailing, he reached land at the edge of a frozen sea (described by him as "curdled"), and described what is believed to be the aurora and the midnight sun. While some historians claim that this new land of Thule was the Norwegian coast or the Shetland Islands, based on his descriptions and the trade routes of early British sailors, it is possible that Pytheas reached as far as Iceland.

The Disturbing Disappearance of the Franklin Expedition
In 1845, two ships entered the dark waters of the frozen and barren Canadian Archipelago, in search of an elusive Northwest Passage. At the large mouth of channel, they were met by two whaling ships, who saw them off shortly afterward. These would be the last individuals to see the ships or the men on board ever again. For over a century, their whereabouts remained a mystery, but slowly over the past few decades, what happened to the ships and the men on board has been discovered, and it is far more horrifying than anyone could have imagined. This is Franklin’s Lost Expedition.

In May of 1845, two vessels of the Royal Navy, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, set out from England. En route to the Canadian Arctic, their mission was to find the Northwest Passage, a trade route from the Atlantic to the Pacific over Canada. But the men were never seen again. This mystery last almost 170 years before the ships were once again found. But these ships were some of the most technologically advanced and well prepared ships for the job. So just what happened? Check it out and find out just what might have happened to the Doomed Franklin Expedition.

In this week's episode of Minutes With, we had the privilege of sitting down with the legendary Sir Ranulph Fiennes, hailed as the world's 'Greatest Living Explorer.' Sir Ranulph recounts his early days in the Special Air Service (SAS), the extensive preparations for his historic Transglobe Expedition (1982), and the harrowing challenges faced during his Antarctic crossing. He recalls near escapes with Polar Bears in the arctic, recalls incredible survival stories of endurance, and reveals how the frostbite he sustained ultimately led to a decision to amputate his own fingers.
