Who was Shem - Generation 11
What does Shem (the son of Noah) look like in the span of history? This video "Who was Shem" answers that question. The Periodic Table of History tries to place the whole of history. Shem is one of the three sons of Noah and Noah is a historical figure that lived through the Great Flood. Many civilizations write of it and write of a figure and his family that survived this flood. I hope "Who was Shem" will help you understand the context of history in its greater scheme.

The Origin of Nations (Sons of Shem)
In this video we'll study Genesis chapter 10, verses 21-32. This video covers a portion of the Table of Nations, but before we get into the names of the sons of Shem (or Shem's descendants), I address another issue while we're here. I try to explain how Shem's first three sons could have been born within "two years after the flood" (Genesis 11:10), but first I must answer the question, "Were there children on the ark?" After all of that, we continue on in the Table of Nations, where we go over an old idea about the origin of the word "Hebrew", and I explain why I believe I might have been wrong in the last video about where the "queen of the south" came from (Matthew 12:42). The origins of Syria, the Eberites (or Hebrews), the first Arabs, and more are mentioned in this part of scripture.

SUMMARY
=======
The Generations of Noah or Table of Nations (Genesis 10 of the Hebrew Bible) is a genealogy of the sons of Noah and their dispersion into many lands after the Flood, focusing on the major known societies. The term nations to describe the descendants is a standard English translation of the Hebrew word "goy", following the c. 400 CE Latin Vulgate's "nationes", and does not have the same political connotations that the word entails today.The list of 70 names introduces for the first time a number of well known ethnonyms and toponyms important to biblical geography such as Noah's three sons Shem, Ham and Japheth, from which were derived Semites, Hamites and Japhetites, certain of Noah's grandsons including Elam, Ashur, Aram, Cush, and Canaan, from which the Elamites, Assyrians, Arameans, Cushites and Canaanites, as well as further descendants including Eber (from which "Hebrews"), the hunter-king Nimrod, the Philistines and the sons of Canaan including Heth, Jebus and Amorus, from which Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites.
As Christianity took over the Roman world, it adopted the idea that all the world's peoples were descended from Noah. But the tradition of Hellenistic Jewish identifications of the ancestry of various peoples, which concentrates very much on the East Mediterranean and the Near East and is described below, became stretched and its historicity questioned. Not all Near Eastern people were covered, and northern peoples important to the Late Roman and medieval world, such as the Celtic, Slavic, Germanic and Nordic peoples were not covered, nor were others of the world's peoples, such as sub-Saharan Africans, Native Americans and peoples of Central Asia, the Indian subcontinent, the Far East and Australasia. A variety of arrangements were devised by scholars in order to make the table fit, with for example the Scythians, who do feature in the tradition, being claimed as the ancestors of much of northern Europe.According to Joseph Blenkinsopp, the 70 names in the list express symbolically the unity of the human race, corresponding to the 70 descendants of Israel who go down into Egypt with Jacob at Genesis 46:27 and the 70 elders of Israel who visit God with Moses at the covenant ceremony in Exodus 24:1–9.

Note: All scripture texts in this video are from the American Standard Version (1901), unless otherwise specified. Sometimes verse numbers are excluded, text reformatted, grammatical errors corrected, and so on for easier reading.
