The Apple Monitor // is a CRT-based green monochrome 12-inch monitor manufactured by Apple Computer for the Apple IIpersonal computer family. Apple did not manufacture the monitor until halfway through the lifespan of the II series. The business-line Apple /// had its own Apple Monitor /// long before. Many home users of Apple II computers used their televisions as computer monitors before the Monitor // was released. It featured an inner vertical-swiveling frame. This allowed users to adjust the viewing angle up or down to suit their taste without the addition of a tilt-and-swivel device. The Monitor // was widely adjustable for the time, as it included adjustments for the size and location of the image on the screen. These adjustments had a very small influence on the picture, however, much to the dislike of some users. The Monitor // was designed for the Apple II+, but was used widely throughout the Apple II product line, most recognizably on the Apple IIe.
The Apple IIc, the fourth model in the Apple II series of personal computers, is Apple Computer’s first endeavor to produce a portable computer. The result was a 7.5lb (3.4kg) notebook-sized version of the Apple II that could be transported from place to place. The c in the name stood for compact, referring to the fact it was essentially a complete Apple II computer setup (minus display and power supply) squeezed into a small notebook-sized housing. While sporting a built-in floppy drive and new rear peripheral expansion ports integrated onto the main logic board, it lacked the internal expansion slots and direct motherboard access of earlier Apple IIs, making it a closed system like the Macintosh. However, that was the intended direction for this model — a more appliance-like machine, ready to use out of the box, requiring no technical know-how or experience to hook up and therefore attractive to first-time users.
History
The Apple IIc was released on April 24, 1984, during an Apple-held event called Apple II Forever. With that motto, Apple proclaimed the new machine was proof of the company's long-term commitment to the Apple II series and its users, despite the recent introduction of the Macintosh. The IIc was also seen as the company's response to the new IBM PCjr, and Apple hoped to sell 400,000 by the end of 1984. While essentially an Apple IIe computer in a smaller case, it was not a successor, but rather a portable version to complement it. One Apple II machine would be sold for users who required the expandability of slots, and another for those wanting the simplicity of a plug and play machine with portability in mind.
The Apple IIc Plus is the sixth and final model in the Apple II series of personal computers, produced by Apple Computer. The "Plus" in the name was a reference to the additional features it offered over the original portable Apple IIc, such as greater storage capacity (a built-in 3.5-inch floppy drive replacing the classic 5.25-inch drive), increased processing speed, and a general standardization of the system components. In a notable change of direction, the Apple IIc Plus, for the most part, did not introduce new technology or any further evolutionary contributions to the Apple II series, instead merely integrating existing peripherals into the original Apple IIc design. The development of the 8-bit machine was criticized by quarters more interested in the significantly more advanced 16-bit Apple IIGS.
History
The Apple IIc Plus was introduced on September 16, 1988, at the AppleFest conference in San Francisco, with less fanfare than the Apple IIc had received four years earlier. Described as little more than a "turbocharged version of the IIc with a high-capacity 3½ disk drive" by one magazine review of the time, some users were disappointed. Many IIc users already had add-ons giving them something rather close to what the new model offered.

Apple II Buyer's Guide!
In this video, I return to one of my favorite subjects - the computers of my youth - to bring you a buyer's guide for anyone who's interested in retro-buying their first Apple II. The Apple II's still a really fun system with a lot going on for any computer enthusiast. Apple was a very different company in those days, and IBM even took a lot of inspiration from the Apple II for its later PC. So the II line doesn't really feel like a dead end, but in many ways a spiritual predecessor to the desktops - Mac or PC - that many of us still have.
There are various Apple II models to choose from, and here I help you decide which is best for you. (Spoiler alert: there's one machine I think is probably right for about 99% of all Apple II buyers.) I also go through the most common peripherals you'll...

Why did people buy the Apple High Resolution Monochrome monitor?
The Macintosh II line was introduced by Apple in 1987, and it was really cutting edge and really great... but also super expensive. With that first Mac II, there was a gorgeous 13" color monitor to go with it.
Then we have this monitor -- it's 12", it's monochrome and it looks just like the color monitor... but why did Apple release such a thing for this great new color computer?

One clarification on the IIc/IIc Plus and the Floppy Emu: You actually SHOULD be able to boot in 3.5" mode on the Floppy Emu on a IIc Plus. It works with the Unidisk, so probably works with the Floppy Emu too. Let me know if you have a IIc Plus and a Floppy Emu and can confirm this. You also can boot in 5.25" mode on a IIc if using ProDOS disk images, but that rules out most games.

(Spoiler alert: there's one machine I think is probably right for about 99% of all Apple II buyers.) I also go through the most common peripherals you'll want for your system.

Part 2 of 2: Retrobrite and Tune Up (this video)
If you've seen part 1, you know I had an Apple IIc when I was a young. I'm trying feel the joy again so I'm in the process of restoring an Apple IIc monitor. In this video, I retrobrite the monitor case and then give the monitor a full tune up and alignment.
Useful trips are within for anyone trying to tune up a small monochrome screen as many of the adjustments will be the same.
