Antonio (1816–1828) was a British Thoroughbredracehorse and sire best known for winning a controversial race for the classicSt Leger Stakes in 1819. The classic was run twice after claims of an irregular start, but Antonio's victory in the original running was eventually allowed to stand. The rest of his racing career, which lasted from April 1819 until May 1822 was relatively undistinguished although he won five other races. After two minor successes in 1820 he missed the whole of the 1821 before returning as a six-year-old to win two races at Chester. He was then retired to stud where he had limited success as a sire of winners before his death in 1828.
Background
Antonio was a bay horse with a white star and snip and white socks on his hind feet bred by James Ferguson, an innkeeper from Catterick Bridge. His dam was an unnamed mare sired by Evander, a stallion who was exported to Russia in 1813. Antonio was one of only two classic winners produced by Thoroughbred family number 34, the other being his distant relative Birmingham who won the St Leger in 1830. He was from the second crop of foals sired by the 1810 St Leger winner Octavian who stood as a stallion at Oran Farm near Catterick. The colt was sent into training with John Lonsdale.
The horse (Equus ferus caballus) is one of two extantsubspecies of Equus ferus. It is an odd-toed ungulatemammal belonging to the taxonomic family Equidae. The horse has evolved over the past 45 to 55million years from a small multi-toed creature, Hyracotherium, into the large, single-toed animal of today. Humans began to domesticate horses around 4000 BC, and their domestication is believed to have been widespread by 3000 BC. Horses in the subspecies caballus are domesticated, although some domesticated populations live in the wild as feral horses. These feral populations are not true wild horses, as this term is used to describe horses that have never been domesticated, such as the endangered Przewalski's horse, a separate subspecies, and the only remaining true wild horse. There is an extensive, specialized vocabulary used to describe equine-related concepts, covering everything from anatomy to life stages, size, colors, markings, breeds, locomotion, and behavior.
Horses' anatomy enables them to make use of speed to escape predators and they have a well-developed sense of balance and a strong fight-or-flight response. Related to this need to flee from predators in the wild is an unusual trait: horses are able to sleep both standing up and lying down. Female horses, called mares, carry their young for approximately 11months, and a young horse, called a foal, can stand and run shortly following birth. Most domesticated horses begin training under saddle or in harness between the ages of two and four. They reach full adult development by age five, and have an average lifespan of between 25 and 30years.
Uma(馬, also known as Horse) is a 1941 black-and-white Japanese film directed by Kajiro Yamamoto and starring Hideko Takamine, whom Yamamoto had directed in his film Composition Class (Tsuzurikata Kyōshitsu) three years before. Uma was actually completed by assistant director Akira Kurosawa. It follows the story of Ine Onoda, the eldest daughter of a poor family of farmers, who raises a colt from birth and comes to love the horse dearly. When the horse is grown, the government orders it auctioned and sold to the army. Ine struggles to prevent the sale.
Overview
The film is a tale about a young girl and the colt she raises from its birth. But it is also about the struggle of farmers existing on the edge of poverty. Akira Kurosawa is credited as the film's production coordinator, which is equivalent to first assistant director. But Kurosawa's signature is all over this work and is the last film he was to work on as an assistant before starting his own directing career. The film took three years to plan and a year to film. Kajiro Yamamoto had to commute to the far mountainous location but had to turn his attention to his money making comedies in Tokyo and so he left production in the hands of his assistant, Kurosawa.
Maurice Silvera (born 10 October 1973), better known as Antonio, is a United Kingdom-based Jamaicanreggae singer, primarily recording in the lovers rock style.
Born in Port Antonio, he began performing at the age of twelve, and went on to perform regularly on sound systems such as Mafia Five, Prince Ajax and Missile, initially working under the name Singing Morris. His first recording was "Woman a You Mi Want" for the Black Lion label in 1995. After touring Europe with the Jungle Brothers, he relocated to Birmingham, England in 1998, and began working under the name Antonio. His debut album, So Many Signs, was recorded at Cave studio in London and released in 2000 on Jet Star's Charm label. He since recorded primarily for European labels including the German Sun Vibes Records. His second album, with a working title of So Amazing, is due for release in June 2012.
Antonio is the title character in Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. He is a middle-aged bachelor and merchant by trade who has his financial interests tied up in overseas shipments when the play begins. He is kind, generous, honest and confident, and is loved and revered by all the Christians who know him. His willingness to die for Bassanio is a manifestation of his character. Antonio manifests his piety by cursing and spitting at Shylock (anti-semitism was common in Europe in Shakespeare's day).
Highlights of Antonio’s scenes
Act 1
When we first see him commiserating with his friends Salanio and Salarino he is pondering the unknown source of his depressive state:
In sooth I know not why I am so sad.
It wearies me, you say it wearies you;
But how I caught it, found it, or came by it,
What stuff ‘tis made of, where of it is born,
I am to learn
And such a want-wit sadness makes of me
That I have much ado to know myself. (MOV 1.1.1-7)'
His friends try to guess the origin and nature of his condition by questioning him. First they inquire as to whether or not he is worried about his investments. When he insists that is not the reason they ask if he is in love which he is also quick to dismiss. It is then speculated that perhaps he has a strange temperament as some people do. This pair quickly exits to make way for Bassanio who is accompanied by his friends Lorenzo and Gratiano. Lorenzo cannot get in a word for the boisterous Gratiano who makes sport of Antonio's melancholy telling him that he is too serious and that he himself would rather go through life acting foolish. After Lorenzo and Gratiano leave Bassanio tries to put Antonio at ease by saying Gratiano talks a lot of nonsense. It is in this conversation that we find a possible reason for Antonio’s sadness, the impending loss of his friend (or some suspect lover) to a woman’s affections.

1997 San Antonio Handicap - Gentlemen -vs- Alphabet Soup
On a day when form fell apart in two other stakes, Gentlemen was Gentlemen at Santa Anita. In other words, trainer Richard Mandella's 5-year-old continued his inexorable roll toward world recognition with a three-quarter-length victory over Alphabet Soup in the $300,300 San Antonio Handicap.
"I don't think I've ever had a better horse than this one," Mandella said. "He can run fast on either dirt or turf, and he's got the class to beat a horse like Alphabet Soup. . . . This was a big proving ground."
Alphabet Soup, running for the first time since winning the Breeders' Cup Classic three months ago, made up ground in the stretch with a late surge, but Gentlemen and jockey Gary Stevens were still best at the wire.
