Antiochus V Eupator
Antiochus V Eupator (Greek: Αντίοχος Ε' Ευπάτωρ, whose epithet means "of a good father"; ca. 172 BC – 161 BC) was a ruler of the Greek Seleucid Empire who reigned 163–161 BC (based on dates from 1 Maccabees 6:16 and 7:1).
Antiochus V was only nine years old when he succeeded to the kingship, following the death in Persia of his father Antiochus IV Epiphanes and his mother Laodice IV. The general Lysias, who had been left in charge of Syria by Epiphanes, served as regent for the child, although he was challenged by other generals. The Roman Senate still kept Demetrius, son of Seleucus IV and the rightful heir to the throne, as hostage, refusing to release him because they considered it better to have Syria nominally ruled by a boy and his regent than the 22-year-old Demetrius.
At the outset of the reign of Antiochus V, there was an attempt by the Syrians to quell the Maccabean Revolt in Judea, but this ended in a weak compromise. After a military victory in the Battle of Beth-Zecharia, and the killing of Eleazar Avaran, a brother of Judas Maccabaeus, Lysias was informed that Philip, (a confidant of Antiochus IV Epiphanes, who had accompanied this previous king to conquer Mesopotamia, and had been entrusted prior to the death of the king with the upbringing of Antiochus V), was returning to the capital with the other half of the Seleucid army. Lysias felt threatened, and advised Antiochus V to offer peace to the Jews. The Jews accepted; however, in order to ensure they would not rise against them soon again, the Syrian king and regent broke their promise and tore down the walls of Jerusalem before leaving.

Anatolia (from Greek Ἀνατολή, Anatolḗ — "east" or "(sun)rise"; in modern Turkish: Anadolu), in geography known as Asia Minor (from Greek: Μικρὰ Ἀσία Mīkrá Asía — "small Asia"; in modern Turkish: Küçük Asya), Asian Turkey, Anatolian peninsula, or Anatolian plateau, is the westernmost protrusion of Asia, which makes up the majority of the Republic of Turkey. The inhabitants of this region predominantly spoke Greek until the region was conquered first by the Seljuk Turks and later by the Ottoman Empire.
The region is bounded by the Black Sea to the north, the Mediterranean Sea to the south, and the Aegean Sea to the west. The Sea of Marmara forms a connection between the Black and Aegean Seas through the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits and separates Anatolia from Thrace on the European mainland.
Traditionally, Anatolia is considered to extend in the east to a line between the Gulf of İskenderun and the Black Sea to what is historically known as the Armenian Highlands (Armenia Major). This region is now named and largely situated in the Eastern Anatolia region of the far north east of Turkey and converges with the Lesser Caucasus - an area that was incorporated in the Russian Empire region of Transcaucasia in the 19th century. Thus, traditionally Anatolia is the territory that comprises approximately the western two-thirds of the Asian part of Turkey. However, since the Armenian Genocide and declaration of the Turkish Republic in 1923, the Armenian Highlands had been renamed Eastern Anatolia by the Turkish government and Anatolia is often considered to be synonymous with Asian Turkey, which comprises almost the entire country, its eastern and southeastern borders are widely taken to be the Turkish borders with neighboring Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Iraq, and Syria, in clockwise direction.

Asia Minor (instrumental)
"Asia Minor" is a 1961 instrumental recording by Jimmy Wisner (operating under the name Kokomo so as to not alienate his jazz fans). It is a rock and roll adaptation of Edvard Grieg's "Piano Concerto in A Minor", using shellac on the hammers of a cheap piano so as to induce a honky-tonk sound. He was turned down by 10 labels and had to release the track on his own label Future Records. The song became a hit, reaching No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 35 on the UK Singles Chart, despite having been banned by the BBC, which at the time refused airplay for music found to violate various standards, including pieces deemed to "[distort] melody, harmony and rhythm".
Background
Wisner had previously had two albums out as part of the Jimmy Wisner Trio, but had the idea for adapting a famous classical song into a boogie-woogie-style piano track. Even though Wisner had many connections in the music industry, no-one was willing to take a chance on it; ten rejections later, including from Felsted Records that had released his previous two albums, Wisner decided to release the record on his own label, Future Records. To avoid alienating the jazz community, Wisner used the pseudonym "Kokomo". As a result, no interviews, photographs, or performances as Kokomo, were ever given in support of "Asia Minor".

Reception
The Allmusic review by Scott Yanow awarded the album 4½ stars and stated "The solos tend to be concise but quite meaningful, and, overall, this hard bop but occasionally surprising session is quite memorable".

In the dimly lit chambers of Antiochus the Great, the weight of a momentous decision hung heavy in the air as Hannibal Barca, a formidable tactician with an aura of relentless persuasion, exerted his influence. For days, Hannibal had been weaving a tapestry of strategic allure, drawing Antiochus into the intricate dance of war. The flickering candlelight cast shadows on Antiochus's contemplative visage, reflecting the internal struggle between ambition and caution. Hannibal's words, akin to a persistent drumbeat, echoed in the silence, gradually chipping away at the barriers of restraint. Finally, at the precipice of a fateful choice, Antiochus yielded to the relentless pressure. In a decisive moment, he issued the command to invade Greece, Hannibal's strategic brilliance intertwined with Antiochus's ambitions, setting the stage for a tumultuous chapter in the annals of ancient warfare.
In the last episode, revolts in Egypt gave Antiochus the opportunity he was looking for to finally win the Syrian Wars. However, his growing power has attacted the attention of Rome, who are now beginging to interfer in his plans. A fatal war is brewing on the horizon.
After taking over Syria, the only threat to the Seleucids from the Ptolemies remained in Asia Minor. As we mentioned before, Philip of Macedon was supposed to handle this, but Rome stepped in, and Philip got stuck in a war he couldn't win. Still determined, Antiochus focused on Asia Minor, trying to control the coastal towns influenced by the Ptolemies and the independent Greek cities. But this move angered the Roman Republic, which claimed to defend Greek freedom. Smyrna and Lampsacus asked Rome for help.
In 196 BC, Antiochus gained a foothold in Thrace, taking advantage of Rome pulling back from Greece. Hannibal, a famous general who had caused trouble for Rome in the past, joined Antiochus and encouraged him to go to war.
Hannibal, known as one of history's great generals, had made a big impact on Rome during the Second Punic War. After that, he led Carthage but was later kicked out for running it too well, making the Romans uneasy. At Antiochus's court, Hannibal pushed for war with Rome and became the naval commander. Using clever tactics like catapulting snakes onto enemy ships, Hannibal won many battles.
In 192 BC, Antiochus marched into Greece with a strong 10,000-man army, leading the Aetolian League. But in 191 BC, the Romans, led by Manius Acilius Glabrio, defeated him at Thermopylae. Antiochus had to retreat to Asia Minor. The Romans took advantage of their victory by invading Anatolia. Scipio Asiaticus's big win at Magnesia and Sipylum in 190 BC, along with Hannibal's defeat at sea, gave Asia Minor to the Romans.
In 188 BC, the Treaty of Apamea made Antiochus give up all land north and west of the Taurus Mountains. The Romans gave these lands to allies like Rhodes and the ruler Eumenes II. Many Greek cities kept their freedom. This hit the Seleucid Empire hard, making the outlying provinces break away. In a final attempt for power, Antiochus went to Luristan but died while looting a temple in Elymaïs, Persia, in 187 BC. And so, the epic story unfolded—a tale of conquest, alliances, and the rise and fall of empires in ancient history.

Antiochus III, commonly known as Antiochus the Great, was a Hellenistic ruler who reigned as the sixth monarch of the Seleucid Empire from 223 to 187 BCE. He was born in 241 BCE, and his father was Seleucus II Callinicus. Antiochus the Great is best known for his ambitious military campaigns and attempts to restore the Seleucid Empire to its former prominence.
Upon ascending the throne, Antiochus faced a challenging political landscape, with the Seleucid Empire weakened by internal strife and external pressures. One of his primary goals was to expand and consolidate his empire's territory, mirroring the grand conquests of Alexander the Great. Antiochus engaged in military campaigns against various neighboring regions, including attempts to reclaim territories lost during the reign of his predecessors.
His campaigns included conflicts with the Ptolemaic Kingdom in Egypt, leading to the famous Battle of Raphia in 217 BCE, where he faced setbacks against Ptolemy IV. Antiochus also sought to assert control over regions such as Asia Minor, Armenia, Parthia, and Bactria. His military successes and challenges against powerful adversaries, including Rome, marked a significant chapter in the history of the Hellenistic world.
Despite notable victories, Antiochus the Great faced setbacks, especially in his interactions with the Roman Republic. The Treaty of Apamea in 188 BCE forced him to cede significant territories and marked the decline of the Seleucid Empire's influence. Antiochus died in 187 BCE while attempting to loot a temple in Elymaïs, Persia.
Antiochus the Great's legacy is one of a visionary and ambitious ruler who sought to revive the former glory of the Seleucid Empire, yet ultimately faced challenges that led to its decline. His reign is a complex chapter in the history of the Hellenistic period, marked by military exploits, strategic decisions, and interactions with other powerful entities of the time.

In the dimly lit chambers of Antiochus the Great, the weight of a momentous decision hung heavy in the air as Hannibal Barca, a formidable tactician with an aura of relentless persuasion, exerted his influence. For days, Hannibal had been weaving a tapestry of strategic allure, drawing Antiochus into the intricate dance of war. The flickering candlelight cast shadows on Antiochus's contemplative visage, reflecting the internal struggle between ambition and caution. Hannibal's words, akin to a persistent drumbeat, echoed in the silence, gradually chipping away at the barriers of restraint. Finally, at the precipice of a fateful choice, Antiochus yielded to the relentless pressure. In a decisive moment, he issued the command to invade Greece, Hannibal's strategic brilliance intertwined with Antiochus's ambitions, setting the stage for a tumultuous chapter in the annals of ancient warfare.
In the last episode, revolts in Egypt gave Antiochus the opportunity he was looking for to finally win the Syrian Wars. However, his growing power has attacted the attention of Rome, who are now beginging to interfer in his plans. A fatal war is brewing on the horizon.
After taking over Syria, the only threat to the Seleucids from the Ptolemies remained in Asia Minor. As we mentioned before, Philip of Macedon was supposed to handle this, but Rome stepped in, and Philip got stuck in a war he couldn't win. Still determined, Antiochus focused on Asia Minor, trying to control the coastal towns influenced by the Ptolemies and the independent Greek cities. But this move angered the Roman Republic, which claimed to defend Greek freedom. Smyrna and Lampsacus asked Rome for help.
In 196 BC, Antiochus gained a foothold in Thrace, taking advantage of Rome pulling back from Greece. Hannibal, a famous general who had caused trouble for Rome in the past, joined Antiochus and encouraged him to go to war.
Hannibal, known as one of history's great generals, had made a big impact on Rome during the Second Punic War. After that, he led Carthage but was later kicked out for running it too well, making the Romans uneasy. At Antiochus's court, Hannibal pushed for war with Rome and became the naval commander. Using clever tactics like catapulting snakes onto enemy ships, Hannibal won many battles.
In 192 BC, Antiochus marched into Greece with a strong 10,000-man army, leading the Aetolian League. But in 191 BC, the Romans, led by Manius Acilius Glabrio, defeated him at Thermopylae. Antiochus had to retreat to Asia Minor. The Romans took advantage of their victory by invading Anatolia. Scipio Asiaticus's big win at Magnesia and Sipylum in 190 BC, along with Hannibal's defeat at sea, gave Asia Minor to the Romans.
In 188 BC, the Treaty of Apamea made Antiochus give up all land north and west of the Taurus Mountains. The Romans gave these lands to allies like Rhodes and the ruler Eumenes II. Many Greek cities kept their freedom. This hit the Seleucid Empire hard, making the outlying provinces break away. In a final attempt for power, Antiochus went to Luristan but died while looting a temple in Elymaïs, Persia, in 187 BC. And so, the epic story unfolded—a tale of conquest, alliances, and the rise and fall of empires in ancient history.

Antiochus V Eupator
Antiochus V Eupator (Greek: Αντίοχος Ε' Ευπάτωρ, whose epithet means "of a good father"; ca. 172 BC – 161 BC) was a ruler of the Greek Seleucid Empire who reigned 163–161 BC (based on dates from 1 Maccabees 6:16 and 7:1).
Antiochus V was only nine years old when he succeeded to the kingship, following the death in Persia of his father Antiochus IV Epiphanes and his mother Laodice IV. The general Lysias, who had been left in charge of Syria by Epiphanes, served as regent for the child, although he was challenged by other generals. The Roman Senate still kept Demetrius, son of Seleucus IV and the rightful heir to the throne, as hostage, refusing to release him because they considered it better to have Syria nominally ruled by a boy and his regent than the 22-year-old Demetrius.
At the outset of the reign of Antiochus V, there was an attempt by the Syrians to quell the Maccabean Revolt in Judea, but this ended in a weak compromise. After a military victory in the Battle of Beth-Zecharia, and the killing of Eleazar Avaran, a brother of Judas Maccabaeus, Lysias was informed that Philip, (a confidant of Antiochus IV Epiphanes, who had accompanied this previous king to conquer Mesopotamia, and had been entrusted prior to the death of the king with the upbringing of Antiochus V), was returning to the capital with the other half of the Seleucid army. Lysias felt threatened, and advised Antiochus V to offer peace to the Jews. The Jews accepted; however, in order to ensure they would not rise against them soon again, the Syrian king and regent broke their promise and tore down the walls of Jerusalem before leaving.
