Anne Avril NightingaleMBE (born 1 April 1940) is an English radio and television broadcaster. She is more commonly known by the more informal forename Annie. She was the first female presenter on BBC Radio 1 and is its longest-serving presenter, ahead of the late John Peel who was a regular broadcaster from the launch of the station in 1967 until his death in October 2004.
She started at Radio 1 on 1 January 1970 with a Sunday evening show. Later she then hosted the singles review show What's New in the early 1970s before graduating to a late-night progressive rock show, which was simulcast on the Radio 2 FM frequency.

Annie Nightingale led the way as Radio 1's first female DJ and introduced a generation to exciting new sounds as the face of the Old Grey Whistle Test from 1978. Back then, punk was hard to find on mainstream television and Annie sought to build a platform for young people to have their say.
In this programme, Annie opens up the archive to select some of the finest and most intriguing moments from this era. Covering punk, post-punk and new wave, Annie has chosen to explore a movement in music that became the soundtrack to a generation.
