Anne of Brittany - Twice Crowned Queen of France
The story of Anne of Brittany, the only woman in history who became Queen of France twice, is about the strong character of a woman who had to deal with politics and personal loss from a very young age. According to Brantôme, “Anne de Bretagne was the most worthy and honourable queen that has ever been since Queen Blanche, mother of the King Saint-Louis, and very sage and virtuous.”

Forced to Marry a French King - Anne of Brittany
I am Anne of Brittany, Queen of France. I was born in 1477 as the eldest daughter of the Duke of Brittany. My life has been one of political intrigue and personal tragedy, but I have always fought for what I believe in.
When I was just a teenager, my father died and I became the Duchess of Brittany. However, the French king, Charles VIII, had designs on my duchy. He invaded Brittany and forced me to marry him against my will.
Our marriage was short-lived, as Charles VIII died only a year later. I then married his cousin, Louis XII. This marriage was more successful, and we had several children together. However, our happiness was shattered when our eldest son died suddenly at the age of three.
Louis XII died in 1515, and I married his cousin, Francis I. This marriage was also successful...

⭐ Great Hours of Anne of Brittany (Tours, c. 1503–8) Bibliothèque nationale de France ⭐
This Book of Hours is a masterpiece of French painting created for the woman twice crowned Queen of France: as spouse of Charles VIII and Louis XII
Bound in black leather with silver clasps decorated with the queen’s monogram
This Book of Hours was created in Tours (France) by Master Jean Bourdichon, who served as court painter to four French kings: Louis XI, Charles VIII, Louis XII, and François I
The codex includes 49 full-page miniatures and 337 marginal illuminations depicting plants, insects and small mammals
The calendar of this book of Hours is designed as a series of paintings interrupted in the centre by the framed text, an unprecedented practice in French miniature painting
Jean Bourdichon painted many full-page scenes with gold frames upon a ground of parchment dyed black. The miniatures are comparable to paintings on canvas or board because of their size, pictorial technique, use of perspective, realism…
Its paintings clearly contributed to the evolution from Gothic to Renaissance style
There are more than 330 plants on the margins, accompanied by their scientific names in Latin and common names in French, as if we were dealing with a botanical treatise
This “herbal” is also inhabited by insects and small animals that enhance its beauty and originality with their bright colours
This is, in short, two codices in one: a book of hours used for prayer but with characteristics of a botanical atlas
Following the death of the duchess of Brittany in 1514, the codex enthralled Louis XIV, who transferred it to the cabinet of curiosities at the Palace of Versailles. Napoleon III was enraptured by its beauty as well. He had it exhibited at the Museum of Sovereigns in the Louvre
This Book of Hours is now one of the most highly-prized treasures of the Bibliothèque nationale de France
The commentary volume that accompanies the “almost-original” edition is the most comprehensive study ever conducted of the manuscript, written by:
● Marie-Pierre Laffitte (Head Curator of the Manuscript Department, Bibliothèque nationale de France)
● Georges Minois (Historian of Brittany)
● Michèle Bilimoff (Research engineer in Archaeology, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique)
● Carlos Miranda García-Tejedor (Doctor in History)
First, unique and unrepeatable “almost-original” edition, limited to 987 copies numbered and certified by notary public

This marriage was also successful, and we had several children together. However, I was never able to forget my first love, Louis XII.
I died in 1514 at the age of 37. I was buried in the Basilica of Saint-Denis, alongside my second husband, Louis XII.
