Andrew "Andy" White (27 July 1930 – 9 November 2015) was a Scottish drummer, primarily as a session musician. He was affectionately christened "the fifth Beatle" as he is best known for replacing Ringo Starr on drums on the Beatles' first single, "Love Me Do". White was featured on the American 7" single release of the song, which also appeared on the band's debut British album, Please Please Me. He also played on "P.S. I Love You", which was the B-side of "Love Me Do".
White played with other prominent musicians and groups both in the United Kingdom and the United States, including Chuck Berry, Billy Fury, Herman's Hermits and Tom Jones. AllMusic called White "one of the busier drummers in England from the late '50s through the mid-'70s".
Early life and early career
Andy White was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on 27 July 1930, the son of a baker. At the age of 12, he started playing drums in a pipe band, and became a professional session musician at the age of 17. In the 1950s and early 1960s, White played drums with a number of swing and traditional jazz groups and musicians. In 1958 he formed a big band jazz outfit and took it to the American Northeast where he backed rockers like Chuck Berry, the Platters and Bill Haley & His Comets. White said, "We used some big band arrangements and put a back beat to it to fit in with the rock 'n' roll thing. I got the chance to hear rock 'n' roll in the flesh. That was where I got a good idea about what it was supposed to happen, drumwise." In 1960 in London White recorded with Billy Fury on Fury's first album, The Sound of Fury, which is generally regarded as Britain's first rock and roll album.
Dr. Andrew Benjamin (Andy) White, Jr. was a manager of advanced computer projects at the Los Alamos National Laboratory where he served as the Deputy Associate Director of the Theory, Simulation and Computing Directorate, and the Roadrunner Project Director from 2006-2012. Before that, he founded and served as Director of the Los Alamos Advanced Computing Laboratory (1989-1998) and Program Manager for the Department of Energy (DOE) High Performance Computing and Communications program. As a college student he had been a quarterback for the University of Texas Longhorns football team. He started one game in 1966 against the Oklahoma Sooners.
Early life
White was the son of a prominent Houston lawyer and an exceptional student and athlete, who served as class president, tied for class valedictorian, and was a highly rated football player. Out of high school he was recruited by almost every team in the Southwest Conference, others in the Southeast and Mideast and by Ivy League schools like Yale, Princeton and Brown, but turned them down to go to Texas, where his father went, as a Plan II student, on an academic scholarship, and play football for Darrell Royal.
He released his first EP Religious Persuasion in 1985 on Stiff Records, and his first album Rave on Andy White in 1986. Since then he has released eleven solo albums plus numerous compilations and live albums, and collaborated with many other artists including Peter Gabriel, Sinéad O'Connor and English producer John Leckie. White won Ireland's Hot Press Songwriter of the Year Award in 1993.
His most recent studio albums are How Things Are (2014) and a double CD collection 21st Century Troubadour (2012), based around the book of the same name.

andy white - if you want it
If You Want It, taken from Andy White's album Songwriter', stars a dinosaur, a snail, and Andy's drawing hand.
Following the Scorsesian epic quality of No Way Out, in which we followed the travails of an intrepid Tasmanian Devil and his flight from captivity, comes this Crichtonian struggle for survival as a lost world from prehistory comes face to face with the present.
If You Want It was written with Allison Russell (Po' Girl, The Birds Of Chicago), who shares lead vocals with Andy and features Paul Rigby on pedal steel, Radoslav Lorkovic on piano and Hammond, and John Raham on drums, who also engineered in Vancouver, Canada.
Andy claims this video clip was the only way he could be sure that everyone got the words of the song - but then he didn't reckon on his 'artistic-yet-as-clear-a...

Andy White - 12 settembre 1997 concerto live @Spaziomusica Pavia
