Depeche Mode's Dave Gahan 'totally lost it' at Andy Fletcher's funeral
At Andy Fletcher's funeral, Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode "completely lost it" and began crying hysterically.
The 60-year-old musician was devastated by the death of his longtime bandmate, who passed away in May at age 60 from an aortic dissection, and admits he began crying during the memorial service when he and guitarist Martin Gore saw their former record label head, Daniel Miller.
Gahan stated to the Guardian newspaper: "When Miller entered with his wife, Martin and I got to our feet and stumbled into him; he embraced us; and we were all simply... speechless. In fact, I was bawling my eyes out. We were a party of three this time. That's when I completely lost it, and I don't know why. Here's a particular band that I wanted to draw at some point, and now, here they are; Depeche Mode! They are an English band who have been active since 1980, and they have been a big influence on electronic music (as well as influencing various other bands and musicians). In 2020, Depeche Mode was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (after previously being nominated in 2017 and 2018). Some of their best-known songs include "People are People", "Policy of Turth", "Personal Jesus", and "Enjoy the Silence", and out of all their songs, "People are People" and "Strangelove" are my two favorites.

He reminded me that I was a teenager on the cusp of adulthood when he first met me and my band. This is something I've considered. Forty or so years have passed. In all of my adult years."
The musician continued by saying he pondered leaving Depeche Mode after his friend's death, but changed his mind after having an open discussion with Al Gore.

According to what Gahan said with the Guardian newspaper: "When Miller came in with his wife, Martin and I got to our feet and sort of fell into him; he embraced us, and we were all just... stunned. Andrew Fletcher, the keyboard player and founder member of British electronic pioneers Depeche Mode has died, the group said on Thursday. He was 60.
"We are shocked and filled with overwhelming sadness with the untimely passing of our dear friend, family member, and bandmate Andy 'Fletch' Fletcher," the group said on Twitter.
Depeche Mode were formed in Basildon, eastern England, in 1980 with the line up of Fletcher, Vince Clarke, Martin Gore and David Gahan. Their debut 1981 album "Speak & Spell" put them at the centre of the British new wave scene.
After Alan Wilder replaced Clarke in 1982, the band went on to find international success with the albums "Violator" in 1990 and "Songs of Faith and Devotion" in 1993.
Fletcher was born in 1961 in Nottingham, and moved to Basildon where he formed the band Composition Of Sound in the late 1970s alongside Martin Gore and Vince Clarke.
With the recruitment of singer Dave Gahan they changed their name to Depeche Mode, and the quartet went on to enjoy a spree of early 80s chart hits.
Fletcher leaves behind a wife, Grainne, to whom he was married for almost 30 years, and two children, Megan and Joe.
He played on all of Depeche Mode’s studio albums, including Songs Of Faith And Devotion in 1993 and Ultra in 1997, which both reached No 1 in the album chart in the UK.
Not being the singer or the main songwriter, Fletcher was often regarded in later years by fans as the manager figure within the band, looking after the business side of a group credited with selling more than 100m records worldwide.
In 2013 he told an interviewer that he was “the tall guy in the background, without whom this international corporation called Depeche Mode would never work”.
In the 1989 documentary 101 by director D A Pennebaker, which was based around the 101st date of the band’s Music For The Masses tour, Fletcher was even more understating about his role, saying “Martin’s the songwriter, Alan’s the good musician, Dave’s the vocalist, and I bum around.”
Wilder quit in 1995, leaving the group as a three-piece. The band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020.
