Take a tour of your newly renovated New Carrollton Station
In Summer 2022, Metro worked around the clock to reconstruct the outdoor platforms and install station improvements at five Orange Line stations: New Carrollton, Landover, Cheverly, Deanwood, and Minnesota Ave.
The stations reopened in September with many new features:
-New slip-resistant tiles for better traction in slippery conditions
-Larger digital display screens
-Brighter, Energy-efficient LED lighting
-Stainless steel platform shelters with power outlets
These station closures were part of the fourth and final phase of Metro’s four-year platform reconstruction and station improvements program, to bring a higher level of safety, convenience, and communication to all customers.

MARC, ACELA, and AMTRAK TRAINS @ New Carrollton, MD. Station
Not long ago I drove one of my friends up to the New Carrollton, MD Amtrak station. Across the way is the metro system ( Subway), it can be reached at the same entrance as the MARC and Amtrak trains but are not on the same platform. So we go upstairs to see where the train will pick up. While there a MARC train arrives heading for Washington, DC. It arrived with the engine in the rear since there is no place for the trains to turn around. After this took off we went down stairs because it’s quite cold and are expecting snow. There is a place to purchase some bottled drinks, newspapers and candy. There are many to sit and wait for your train to come. There are boards to watch and announcements to know when your train is coming, plenty of time to get upstairs. So it’s close to the time when ...

There is a place to purchase some bottled drinks, newspapers and candy. There are many to sit and wait for your train to come. There are boards to watch and announcements to know when your train is coming, plenty of time to get upstairs. So it’s close to the time when the train was to arrive and we went back upstairs to wait. Another MARC Train arrived coming out of DC and points north or west. An announcement came over the speaker saying that another train was approaching, so I started my camera. I had no idea it was one of the Acela trains. It was not stopping here and passed quickly, as it passed it brought a huge bust of wind, it almost knocked me off my feet. I don’t know how fast it was going but I know it had to slow down when it was coming up to the station. After the Acela passed my friend’s train came and stopped. We said our goodbyes until I would pick them up a few days later. As it was leaving another MARC train approached on the other side going into DC. Next was my friend’s train on the trip back to the area. It was a great experience to see for the first time the Acela train. As I was videotaping it started snowing. I would like to see them again in the open to see how fast they go.
Weather was cold and overcast.
Temperature was in the low 30’s F or about 0°C.

If you’ve taken the Amtrak recently, you might have no idea that the United States used to have the largest and wealthiest rail system in the world. How did the US go from having luxurious, widely used passenger trains to the Amtrak system we have today?
Video producer Dean Peterson makes a 72-hour journey on Amtrak from LA to NYC to show its current state of operation. From getting kicked in the head by his sleeping seat mate to taking in sweeping views of the desert at sunset, Dean shows the highs and lows of being stuck on Amtrak for days on end.
Along the way, he explains the history of passenger rail in the US — starting in the pr...

Why Train Tickets Cost So Much In America
Taking a train in the U.S. is often more expensive than flying and more expensive than intercity train systems in other developed countries, which often have even faster trains and better service. But Amtrak, the federally funded company that runs many of America's passenger trains, has never made money. In fact, the company has a $42 billion repair backlog and in 2021 wasn't even able to cover half of its expenses from ticket revenue. That business comes mostly from the populous Northeast Corridor, where tickets are quite pricey. Ridership is slowly recovering from an all-time low due to the pandemic, and now Amtrak wants to expand service in a major 15-year plan, with $66 billion in funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Amtrak’s California Zephyr train was named for the original train operated jointly by the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad; the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad; and the Western Pacific Railroad. It was inaugurated March 19, 1949.
From its earliest days, the marketing and advertising for the California Zephyr train route has focused on the spectacular views along the way. And, in this video, you will see why!
This video started with five and a half hours of raw California Zephyr footage, distilled down to the best. That was a tough task because nearly every mile of the California Zephyr’s 2,438 mile journey was spectacular.

Along the way, he explains the history of passenger rail in the US — starting in the problematic robber baron era to the US government’s takeover of passenger rail. Will the United States ever catch up to the rest of the world when it comes to train travel, or are Americans stuck with an underfunded, inefficient rail network forever? Join Dean on his journey as he sets out to find out the answer to these questions and more.

At Amtrak we know the future of the Northeast Corridor depends on the investments we make today, which is why we are excited to announce the upcoming arrival of the next-generation of high-speed rail. The new trainsets will replace the current Acela Express equipment and begin service in 2021.
For this project, we are pleased to be partnering with Alstom, a leading global provider of innovative systems and equipment in the railway sector. Alstom will be building these new trainsets in New York State, with 95% of the trainset’s components being made in America, and parts coming from 350 suppliers in 30 U.S. states.

Watch this video to see what it’s like to travel by train across the USA on Amtrak in Coach, a Roomette, and a Bedroom!
We’ll compare all of Amtrak’s most common accommodations in one trip in order to help you decide which is best for you!
We traveled from San Francisco to Chicago onboard the ICONIC California Zephyr spending one day in Coach, another day in a Roomette, and the third and final day in a Bedroom.
We’ll share exactly what you can expect from each room type and the one thing everyone onboard gets to enjoy: The Unbelievable Views!
Amtrak’s California Zephyr is such an amazing experience, I’ve done it twice now. But this time even better. We stopped in Reno and Denver for 24 hours in part so we could see these cities, but also so we could switch room types for each leg.
In Coach, we’ll show you the Cafe Car and when we travel in a Roomette and in a Bedroom, we’ll show you the Dining Car!
We’ll even get “scientific” by measuring the space you get in each category: Coach Seat and the beds in the Roomette and Bedroom!
