The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is a non-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy, and to reaching out to people with mental disorders and those impacted by suicide."
AFSP's main objectives include:
Funding scientific research
Providing education to professionals
Raising awareness and informing the public about mood disorders and suicide prevention
Advocating for government legislation that promotes suicide prevention efforts, and
Providing resources for families and individuals affected by suicide
History
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) was founded in 1987 by several people who had lost loved ones to suicide. These surviving family members joined with scientists to create the first nationwide not-for-profit devoted to supporting suicide-related research and prevention initiatives.
Constituency
The organization's main constituents are scientists, survivors of suicide loss, people who live with mental illness and their families. AFSP has 75 local chapters nationwide that drive the organization's outreach, advocacy and fundraising efforts. They work closely with organizations that provide crisis counseling, including the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
Suicide prevention is an umbrella term for the collective efforts of local citizen organizations, mental health practitioners and related professionals to reduce the incidence of suicide. Beyond just direct interventions to stop an impending suicide, methods also involve a) treating the psychological and psychophysiological symptoms of depression, b) improving the coping strategies of persons who would otherwise seriously consider suicide, c) reducing the prevalence of conditions believed to constitute risk factors for suicide, and d) giving people hope for a better life after current problems are resolved.
General efforts have included preventive and proactive measures within the realms of medicine and mental health, as well as public health and other fields. Because protective factors such as social support and connectedness, as well as environmental risk factors such as access to lethal means, appear to play significant roles in the prevention of suicide, suicide should not be viewed solely as a medical or mental health issue.
There are effective treatments that focus directly on suicidal thoughts and behaviors and these are proven to reduce suicide attempts in people who need this help. Expand the description to find a list of free, 24/7 hotlines and text lines below. #mentalhealth #therapy #suicideprevention
