Richard Aldington
Richard Aldington (8 July 1892 – 27 July 1962), born Edward Godfree Aldington, was an English writer and poet.
Aldington was known best for his World War I poetry, the 1929 novel, Death of a Hero, and the controversy resulting from his 1955 Lawrence of Arabia: A Biographical Inquiry. His 1946 biography, Wellington, was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize.
Early life
Aldington was born in Portsmouth, the son of a solicitor, and educated at Dover College, and for a year at the University of London. He was unable to complete his degree because of the financial circumstances of his family. He met the poet Hilda Doolittle in 1911 and they married two years later.
Imagism
Aldington's poetry was associated with the Imagist group, and his poetry forms almost one third of the Imagists' inaugural anthology Des Imagistes (1914). Ezra Pound had in fact coined the term imagistes for H.D. and Aldington, in 1912. At this time Aldington's poetry was unrhymed free verse, whereas later in his verse the cadences are long and voluptuous, the imagery weighted with ornament. He was one of the poets around the proto-Imagist T. E. Hulme; Robert Ferguson in his life of Hulme portrays Aldington as too squeamish to approve of Hulme's robust approach, particularly to women. However, Aldington shared Hulme's conviction that experimentation with traditional Japanese verse forms could provide a way forward for avant-garde literature in English, and went often to the British Museum to examine Nishiki-e prints illustrating such poetry.

Amalfi
Amalfi is a town and comune in the province of Salerno, in the region of Campania, Italy, on the Gulf of Salerno. It lies at the mouth of a deep ravine, at the foot of Monte Cerreto (1,315 metres, 4,314 feet), surrounded by dramatic cliffs and coastal scenery. The town of Amalfi was the capital of the maritime republic known as the Duchy of Amalfi, an important trading power in the Mediterranean between 839 and around 1200.
In the 1920s and 1930s, Amalfi was a popular holiday destination for the British upper class and aristocracy.
Amalfi is the main town of the coast on which it is located, named Costiera Amalfitana (Amalfi Coast), and is today an important tourist destination together with other towns on the same coast, such as Positano, Ravello and others. Amalfi is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
History
First mentioned in the 6th century, Amalfi soon afterwards acquired importance as a maritime power, trading grain from its neighbours, salt from Sardinia and slaves from the interior, and even timber, in exchange for the gold dinars minted in Egypt and Syria, in order to buy the Byzantine silks that it resold in the West. Grain-bearing Amalfi traders enjoyed privileged positions in the Islamic ports, Fernand Braudel notes. The Amalfi tables (Tavole amalfitane) provided a maritime code that was widely used by the Christian port cities. Merchants of Amalfi were using gold coins to purchase land in the 9th century, while most of Italy worked in a barter economy. In the 8th and 9th century, when Mediterranean trade revived it shared with Gaeta the Italian trade with the East, while Venice was in its infancy, and in 848 its fleet went to the assistance of Pope Leo IV against the Saracens.

Greetings Thoughtful Travelers! Welcome to today’s thought for
July 8th!
It’s by Richard Aldington, the English writer, poet, and biographer of Lawrence of Arabia. He lived from 1892 to 1962.
“Adventure is allowing the unexpected to happen to you. Exploration is experiencing what you have not experienced before. How can there be any adventure, any exploration, if you let somebody else - above all, a travel bureau - arrange everything before-hand?”
So what are your thoughts on today’s quote? Here’s mine.
“It seems that earlier generations of travelers certainly didn’t like the idea of others planning their trips abroad for them. They didn’t want or need anybody telling them where to go, what to do, where to stay, or even how to get there. They were looking for new experiences, and that was considered an individual pursuit. They weren’t interested in following in the footsteps of others. One of their major goals when traveling was to discover the unexpected, and doing things for themselves was a part of the fun and satisfaction they derived from leaving familiar surroundings behind. Much has changed since then!”

The rich and famous have a penchant for finding the most beautiful places and claiming it for their own. Capri has been a playground and popular hideaway since ancient times and has remained one to this day, with thousands if not millions of tourists visiting every year. But Capri’s most famous spot is not on the island, but below it: La Grotta Azzurra!
When the sea is calm, Roberto rows tourists into the "Blue Grotto" in a tiny boat and serenades his guests; the acoustics naturally phenomenal, he hopes for generous tips. There is competition among the paying guests, rumors circulating that some nationalities are more generous than others. Nobody wants to look like a cheapskate, much to Roberto’s delight.

I don’t recommend renting a car to travel around the Amalfi Coast. Driving along the coast is stressful and very expensive. Parking is mainly for residents, very difficult to have a car here unless your hotel includes a parking space. For transportation from Naples, there are a few options:
You can book a private transfer from the airport which costs around 35 euros per person. This is the best option if you have a lot of luggage but its expensive, however it is still cheaper than a car rental.
There are no direct trains but the best way to get to the coast in my opinion is to take a local train from the Naples train station to Sorrento or to Solarno if you want to start on the opposite side of the coast. Then you can take a ferry or a Sita bus to your specific destination which costs between 5-9 euros per person.
While exploring the different villages, use the local bus system to get between towns which costs only around 1 euro! Renting a scooter costs around 60 euros per day
The Amalfi Coast is one of the most expensive summer destinations in Europe.
Main dishes will usually run 15-25€ at a minimum. A glass of wine will be 6-9€. The high season for visiting the Amalfi Coast in Italy is from June to August, I recommend visiting in September.

I am a garden of red tulips
And late daffodils and bay-hedges,
A small sunk garden
About an oblong pool
With three grey lead Dutch tanks—
I am this garden shattered and blown
With a day-long western gale
And bursts of rapid rain.

And muddy flowers upon the path.
The grass is covered with torn leaves.

Richard Aldington was an English writer and poet, and an early member of the Imagist movement, a style characterized by a minimalist free verse with succinct and vivid images.

Volume Two covers Aldington's personal and public lives as he transformed himself from poet to novelist and from novelist to biographer and explores his debacles and triumphs, particularly in the wake of his hugely controversial attack on the reputation of T.E. Lawrence. This authoritative biography recounts the life of one of the most underrated writers of the last century.

Greetings Thoughtful Travelers! Welcome to today’s thought for
July 8th!
It’s by Richard Aldington, the English writer, poet, and biographer of Lawrence of Arabia. He lived from 1892 to 1962.
“Adventure is allowing the unexpected to happen to you. Exploration is experiencing what you have not experienced before. How can there be any adventure, any exploration, if you let somebody else - above all, a travel bureau - arrange everything before-hand?”
So what are your thoughts on today’s quote? Here’s mine.
“It seems that earlier generations of travelers certainly didn’t like the idea of others planning their trips abroad for them. They didn’t want or need anybody telling them where to go, what to do, where to stay, or even how to get there. They were looking for new experiences, and that was considered an individual pursuit. They weren’t interested in following in the footsteps of others. One of their major goals when traveling was to discover the unexpected, and doing things for themselves was a part of the fun and satisfaction they derived from leaving familiar surroundings behind. Much has changed since then!”

Richard Aldington
Richard Aldington (8 July 1892 – 27 July 1962), born Edward Godfree Aldington, was an English writer and poet.
Aldington was known best for his World War I poetry, the 1929 novel, Death of a Hero, and the controversy resulting from his 1955 Lawrence of Arabia: A Biographical Inquiry. His 1946 biography, Wellington, was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize.
Early life
Aldington was born in Portsmouth, the son of a solicitor, and educated at Dover College, and for a year at the University of London. He was unable to complete his degree because of the financial circumstances of his family. He met the poet Hilda Doolittle in 1911 and they married two years later.
Imagism
Aldington's poetry was associated with the Imagist group, and his poetry forms almost one third of the Imagists' inaugural anthology Des Imagistes (1914). Ezra Pound had in fact coined the term imagistes for H.D. and Aldington, in 1912. At this time Aldington's poetry was unrhymed free verse, whereas later in his verse the cadences are long and voluptuous, the imagery weighted with ornament. He was one of the poets around the proto-Imagist T. E. Hulme; Robert Ferguson in his life of Hulme portrays Aldington as too squeamish to approve of Hulme's robust approach, particularly to women. However, Aldington shared Hulme's conviction that experimentation with traditional Japanese verse forms could provide a way forward for avant-garde literature in English, and went often to the British Museum to examine Nishiki-e prints illustrating such poetry.

Amalfi Coast Travel Tips:
- I recommend flying into Naples or Rome then taking a rental car or public transportation to the coast.
- Driving on the coast can be intimidating, but definitely doable. I highly recommend getting a small car if you do decide to drive, the roads are very narrow. Renting a scooter is also a great alternative.
- Public transportation is another option to get around. Busses are available and I also recommend using ferries to get around to towns such as Positano and Amalfi. There is no traffic and the views are incredible from the ferry.
- Since the Amalfi Coast is so beautiful, it will be packed with tourists during the summer months. So I recommend visiting during the off season in months such as May or September.

When the sea is calm, Roberto rows tourists into the "Blue Grotto" in a tiny boat and serenades his guests; the acoustics naturally phenomenal, he hopes for generous tips. You can see a compilation of our favorite spots like beaches, lagoons, cliffs, ports and houses mainly in the area around Amalfi „City“, Positano, Arienzo Beach Club, Village of Pontone, Atrani, Terrazza dell'Infinito / Villa Cimbrone / Gardens of Villa Cimbrone, Collegiate Santa Maria Maddalena, the beautiful beaches, lagoons, cliffs, ports and houses!

I don’t recommend renting a car to travel around the Amalfi Coast. Driving along the coast is stressful and very expensive. Parking is mainly for residents, very difficult to have a car here unless your hotel includes a parking space. For transportation from Naples, there are a few options:
You can book a private transfer from the airport which costs around 35 euros per person. This is the best option if you have a lot of luggage but its expensive, however it is still cheaper than a car rental.
There are no direct trains but the best way to get to the coast in my opinion is to take a local train from the Naples train station to Sorrento or to Solarno if you want to start on the opposite side of the coast. Then you can take a ferry or a Sita bus to your specific destination which costs between 5-9 euros per person.
While exploring the different villages, use the local bus system to get between towns which costs only around 1 euro! Renting a scooter costs around 60 euros per day
The Amalfi Coast is one of the most expensive summer destinations in Europe.
Main dishes will usually run 15-25€ at a minimum. A glass of wine will be 6-9€. The high season for visiting the Amalfi Coast in Italy is from June to August, I recommend visiting in September.
