One of Tony Blair's election promises in 1997 was to reform the House of Lords, specifically remove the rights of hereditary peers, whose political power has been down from generation to generation. Lord Clifford is utterly incensed that Tony Blair wants to sack him, and the other two thirds of the Lords that earned their right to rule by dint of birth. "It's the history of the family's contribution not only to the nation's heritage, but also to the world," says Lord Clifford in justification. But not all the Lords feel so enraged by the change. Lord Bath spends his time painting portraits of his past lovers, and writing, and is happy to vote away the burden of his 'right to rule'. Lord Colwyn on the other hand has a more balanced view. The practising dentist likes to feel he represents 'Mr Average', and praises the spectrum of professions and walks of life that hereditary peerage brings: "House of Lords throws up a cross section of all kinds of people. Here I am, I'm a dentist, we've got bus drivers, we've got guys who've been in the army, the navy. It throws up a wide cross section of the population.". Yet he also will be voting away the family right to rule. "With my hand on my heart, I can't justify the fact that you can hand on political power." The English aristocracy's great talent for survival may finally have run its course in British politics.

Verse 1:
Beholding Your beauty is all that I long for
To worship You Jesus is my sole desire
For this very heart
You have shaped for Your pleasure
Purposed to lift Your Name higher

I enter Your courts with an offering of praise
I am Your servant come to bring You glory
As is fit for the works of Your hands

Now unto the Lamb
Who sits on the throne
Be glory and honour and praise
All of creation resounds with the song
Worship and praise Him

Keep my eyes fixed ever on Jesus' face
Let not the things of this world ever sway me

Olympic Games 2012: Olympic Truce
Question
11.06 am
Asked By Lord Bates
To ask Her Majesty's Government what specific initiatives they are planning to implement the Olympic Truce for the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Baroness Garden of Frognal: My Lords, the UK will be promoting a fresh resolution calling for the continued observance of the Olympic Truce for the 2012 Games and is currently working with overseas partners in 15 countries and planning activity in a further three on International Inspiration, a sports programme targeted at countries in development. Other initiatives are being considered by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and we expect to learn the results of this work shortly. The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games is also undertaking truce-related programmes.
Lord Bates: I thank my noble friend for that Answer and for the encouraging progress that has been made. Can she confirm that this Olympic Truce resolution is a resolution of the General Assembly of the UN, which quite specifically calls on all signatories to pursue initiatives for peace and reconciliation in the spirit of the ancient Games during the London 2012 Games? This year, the resolution will be not only signed but proposed by the United Kingdom Government. Does she agree that it therefore presents a unique opportunity to hand on a legacy from the London 2012 Olympic Games not only in medals won and land reclaimed but in the lives changed and saved and in the health and humanitarian aid extended?
Baroness Garden of Frognal: I thank my noble friend and of course I agree with what he says. He is tireless in his work to achieve successful outcomes for 2012 through the Olympic Truce, which indeed presents a unique opportunity for the UK to lead on proposals for the sort of peace and reconciliation that he suggests. In previous years, these truce agreement proposals have not resulted too often in major outcomes, but that will not prevent us from trying again this year. It will, of course, be for the United Nations to agree policy actions.
Baroness Billingham: My Lords, we must congratulate the noble Lord, Lord Bates, on his tenacity; I think that this is the third or fourth time that we have debated this and we are all becoming much more
31 Mar 2011 : Column 1336
familiar with it. It is encouraging to hear today a significant change in the Minister's reply. In the past, however charmingly she has replied, all that she has sent the noble Lord has been a "Dear John", but maybe things are now changing. Having watched the cricket yesterday, do we not remind ourselves of the potency of sport for peaceful objectives? Having seen Pakistan and India sitting side by side and embracing each other, I wish his project well. I hope that the Minister will continue to use that as an example of sport and peace and the ways in which they can go together.
Baroness Garden of Frognal: I thank the noble Baroness for her kind words in among that. I am not quite sure where the question was, but if it was whether we agree that sport is an excellent forum for international co-operation, the answer is yes, indeed we do. The Government have some major programmes to encourage sport among young people as well as to support our major adult sporting events.
Lord Higgins: My Lords, does the noble Baroness accept that some of the finest athletes in the world, particularly long-distance runners, come from areas that are now troubled by war in one form or another? The idea of the truce was that people in those circumstances could get to the Games. Does she accept that we should do everything possible to ensure that good athletes can do so? Will she also recognise that few athletes remain at the top for more than four years and that if they are prevented from attending they have therefore lost a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity? Not only are they disappointed, but so are the people who hoped to beat them.
Baroness Garden of Frognal: My noble friend speaks from his own experience as an Olympic athlete and of course I agree with what he says. We in the UK will do what is in our power to encourage people from disadvantaged countries to attend and compete in the Games. A great deal of that depends on the response from those individual countries as well but, as I have said, that will not stop us trying.
Lord Low of Dalston: My Lords, what success are the Government having in brokering a truce between the noble Lords, Lord Coe and Lord Moynihan?

He is tireless in his work to achieve successful outcomes for 2012 through the Olympic Truce, which indeed presents a unique opportunity for the UK to lead on proposals for the sort of peace and reconciliation that he suggests. In previous years, these truce agreement proposals have not resulted too often in major outcomes, but that will not prevent us from trying again this year. It will, of course, be for the United Nations to agree policy actions.
Baroness Billingham: My Lords, we must congratulate the noble Lord, Lord Bates, on his tenacity; I think that this is the third or fourth time that we have debated this and we are all becoming much more

familiar with it.

Raag Aasaa Mohala Panjva : One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru: Namdevs mind was absorbed into God, Gobind, Gobind, Gobind. The calico-printer, worth half a shell, became worth millions. Abandoning weaving and stretching thread, Kabir enshrined love for the Lords lotus feet. A weaver from a lowly family, he became an ocean of excellence. Ruvdas, He used to infuses life back into the mentally dead every day, renounced the world of Maya. He became famous in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, he revealed himself as God those who obtained the Blessed Vision of his Darshan. Sain, the barber, the village drudge, became famous in each and every house. The Supreme Lord God dwelled in his heart, and he was counted among the bhagats. Hearing this, Dhanna the Jaat applied himself to devotional worship. The Lord of the Universe met him personally; Dhanna was so very blessed. P 487 GG
It is only Satguru Ruvdas's name mentioned who is above three qualities of raajas, taamas and satva, renounced the world of Maya. Thirst and desire for Maya and doubt depart and became pure overcomes time, and enters into the fourth state and revealed.
It was this Sant tradition which provided the basis of Guru Nanak; s thought.
The interior religion: interior observance rather then exterior. The Sant belief the major source is to be found in the Bhakti devtional league. And the pattern evolved by Guru Nanak is a reworking of the Sant synthesis, one that does not depart far from Sant sources as far as its fundamental components are concerned. The categorizes employed by Guru Nanak are the categorized of the Sants. The terminology he use is their terminology, and the doctrine he affirms are their doctrines.
Mohala Panjva confirm this on P 867 GG. This is the faith which inspires Nanak:, Gond, Mohala Panjva: One who is cursed by the Saints, is thrown down on the ground. The slanderer of the Saints is thrown down from the skies. I hold the Saints close to my soul. The Saints are saved instantaneously. He alone is a Saint, who is pleasing to the Lord. The Saints, and God, have only one job to do. God gives His hand to shelter the Saints. He dwells with His Saints, day and night. With each and every breath, He cherishes His Saints. He takes the power away from the enemies of the Saints. Let no one slander the Saints. Whoever slanders them, will be destroyed. One who is protected by the Creator Lord, cannot be harmed, no matter how much the whole world may try. I place my faith in my God. My soul and body all belong to Him. This is the faith which inspires Nanak: the self-willed manmukhs will fail, while the Gurmukhs will always win.
The Simritees, Shaastras, Vedas and Puraanas expound upon the Supreme Lord God. The Yogis, celibates, Vaishnavs and followers of Ram Das cannot find the limits of the Eternal Lord God. Shiva and the gods lament and moan, but they do not understand even a tiny bit of the unseen and unknown Lord. One whom the Lord Himself blesses with loving devotional worship, is very rare in this world. I am worthless, with absolutely no virtue at all; all treasures are in Your Glance of Grace. Nanak, the meek, desires only to serve You. Please be merciful, and grant him this blessing, O Divine Guru.
