Altamura, Italy. The Old Town and the Pulo di Altamura. Puglia Ep. 6.

The current city owes its origins to Frederick II of Swabia who in 1232 wanted to build it on the ruins of previous settlements. In reality the area has been inhabited for hundreds of thousands of years, as demonstrated by the discovery of remains of Neanderthal men in the Lamalunga cave.
Altamura is a city of art and the testimonies of its past alone justify a careful visit. The noble palaces, the religious architecture, the fortified farms, the remains of the megalithic walls will leave you speechless.
Without forgetting its gastronomic tradition, especially that linked to...

The locals are also deeply connected to their traditions and are known for their artisanal skills, particularly in the production of traditional Altamura bread, which has a protected designation of origin (PDO) status.
The city of Altamura is a treasure trove of architectural gems. One of its most famous landmarks is the Altamura Cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The cathedral, built in the Romanesque and Gothic styles, boasts an impressive rose window and a bell tower that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city and its surroundings.
The city is also known for its well-preserved historic center, characterized by narrow alleys, winding streets, and medieval buildings made of local limestone, known as "tufo." The use of tufo gives Altamura's buildings a unique yellowish hue and a rough texture, adding to their charm and character.
The houses in Altamura are typically made of tufo and feature a blend of architectural styles, including Roman, medieval, and Renaissance elements. Many of the houses have arched doorways, vaulted ceilings, and decorative details, showcasing the city's artistic heritage. The layout of the homes in Altamura is also distinctive, with many of them arranged in a compact pattern of narrow streets and alleys, creating a sense of intimacy and community among the residents.

Altamura

- Panificio Di Gesù, via Pimentel Eleonora Fonseca 19, Altamura (BA)
- Tierra, via San Biagio 27, Matera (MT)
Abbiamo dormito da:
- Il vialetto nei Sassi, via San Rocco 47, Matera (MT)

In this sixth episode of our tour of Puglia, I take you to Altamura, a small town in Alta Murgia, famous throughout Italy for its bread, Altamura bread, distinguished by the DOP (Protected Designation of Origin) brand.
Without forgetting its gastronomic tradition, especially that linked to bread. Walking through its cloustri (the narrow streets of the historic center) you can visit the ancient ovens for preparing bread dating back to the 1400s. Obviously you will taste the exquisite Altamura bread, with its characteristic shape and unique fragrance.
The territory of Altamura falls within the Alta Murgia National Park. 5 kilometers from the city opens up the immense karst sinkhole called the Pulo di Altamura, absolutely not to be missed. It is a kind of crater half a kilometer wide and about one hundred meters deep, on whose walls there are a series of caves inhabited since the Paleolithic era. At the bottom of the sinkhole, due to the particular environmental conditions, a micro-habitat has been created which has allowed the development of particular flora and fauna.
But beyond the archaeological interest, the Pulo of Altamura is spectacular. I advise you to take the carriage road that follows the perimeter near sunset when the light of the last sun lights up the red earth in the cavities of the rock.
The tracks "Forever Faithfull" and "Raindrops" are available on www.audiohero.com.
