No cure for the condition is known.[2] Efforts may be used to try to speed hair regrowth such as cortisone injections.[2][1] Sunscreen, head coverings to protect from cold and sun, and glasses if the eyelashes are missing are recommended.[2] In some cases, the hair regrows and the condition does not reoccur.[2] In others, hair loss and regrowth occurs over years.[2] Among those in whom all body hair is lost, less than 10% recover.[5]
About 0.15% of people are affected at any one time and 2% of people are affected at some point in time.[2][5] Onset is usually in childhood.[2] Males and females have the condition in equal numbers.[1] The condition does not affect a person's life expectancy.[2]

It's a medical condition where the body produces certain reactions which cause suppression of the hair follicles. So suppression of hair follicles prevent hair growth in that particular area. So this is thought to be an autoimmune disease and this is because when we study the cellular structure of the area where hair is lost we find many white blood cells especially the T Lymphocytes steel lymphocytes are a type of white blood cells found in this area. So it is thought that these cells are responsible for causing this hair loss. Most of the time more than 90% of the cases it is reversible if treatment is taken it is reversible. However there are some patterns like ophiotic pattern what we call. So the hair is lost in this area the edges of the scalp and sometimes in the eyebrow areas. So these are very difficult to treat and often respond only. When the patient is on treatment and often relapse once the treatment is stopped.

Alopecia areata is a disease that happens when the immune system attacks hair follicles and causes hair loss. Hair follicles are the structures in skin that form hair. While hair can be lost from any part of the body, alopecia areata usually affects the head and face. Hair typically falls out in small, round patches about the size of a quarter, but in some cases, hair loss is more extensive. Most people with the disease are healthy and have no other symptoms.
The course of alopecia areata varies from person to person. Some have bouts of hair loss throughout their lives, while others only have one episode. Recovery is unpredictable too, with hair regrowing fully in some people but not others.
There is no cure for alopecia areata, but there are treatments that help hair grow back more quickly. There are also resources to help people cope with hair loss.
In alopecia areata, the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, causing inflammation. Researchers do not fully understand what causes the immune attack on hair follicles, but they believe that both genetic and environmental (non-genetic) factors play a role.
