All Hallows By the Tower, London’s Oldest Church and Crypt Museum
London’s Oldest Church - All Hallows by the Tower
I randomly stumbled into this church the other day, I didn’t even know it existed before. All hallows by the tower is an Early Medieval Anglican church and is the oldest church in London, being founded in AD 675, 300 years before the Tower of London.
The church survived the Great Fire of London in 1666, but was badly damaged during the Blitz in World War II. Following extensive reconstruction, it was rededicated in 1957. It survived the great fire of London solely due to the heroic efforts of Admiral Penn, He saved the church by ordering his sailors to blow up the surrounding buildings. Along with his friend Samuel Pepys he watched the fire of London burn from the tower of All Hallows.

What Lies Beneath - All Hallows By The Tower (HD)
All Hallows-by-the-Tower is an ancient Anglican church located in Byward Street in the City of London, overlooking the Tower of London. This episode allows you to explore the nave with its blackened walls from a WWII bomb explosion & fire, then descend to the crypts to see burial remains and an ancient Roman road. All Hallows is steeped in drama and history. It was first established in 675 by the Saxon Abbey at Barking and was for many years named after the abbey, as All Hallows Barking. The church was built on the site of a former Roman building, traces of which have been discovered in the crypt. It was expanded and rebuilt several times between the 11th century and 15th century. Its proximity to the Tower meant that it acquired royal connections, with Edward IV making it a royal chantry ...

Grandsire Caters at All Hallows, Twickenham, Greater London
An excerpt from a peal of Grandsire Caters rung at All Hallows Church, Twickenham on Friday, 1st November 2024. This was a special moment for me, as it marked my first full peal inside on ten bells.
The tower at All Hallows houses a remarkable set of ten bells, with the tenor bell weighing 18 cwt. These bells were cast by various renowned founders from the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, including Richard Phelps, Thomas Lester, and Mears and Stainbank. Together, they create a magnificent sound, with the tenor bell's deep resonance adding a particular richness to the overall ring.
The bells have an interesting history. Originally housed at St. Dionis Backchurch, they were moved to All Hallows on Lombard Street before being relocated again due to safety concerns. The tower was subsequently rebui...

Located next to the Tower of London, the church has cared for numerous beheaded bodies through out the years which, had been bought for temporary burial following their executions on Tower Hill, including those of Thomas More, Bishop John Fisher and Archbishop Laud.
It’s totally free to enter and below the church is a crypt you can walk around which, has been turned into a museum. It contains portions of a Roman pavement along with other artefacts that were discovered below the church in 1926/27. The exhibition also contains the church’s registers dating back to the 16th century, with framed pictures of notable entries including the baptism of William Penn, the marriage of John Quincy Adams.
The altar in the crypt is of plain stone from the castle of Richard I at Athlit in The Holy Land.
You’ll also see a lot of ship references in the church along with Shackleton’s Crow’s Nest from the ship the Quest, which Sir Ernest Shackleton used for his third and last Antarctic voyage in 1921 and 1922. The ship was waved off from St Catherine’s Dock just around the corner.

Its proximity to the Tower meant that it acquired royal connections, with Edward IV making it a royal chantry and the beheaded victims of Tower executions being sent for temporary burial at All Hallows. The church was badly damaged by a nearby explosion in 1649, which demolished its west tower, and only narrowly survived the Great Fire of London in 1666. It owed its survival to Admiral William Penn, father of William Penn of Pennsylvania fame, who saved it by having the surrounding buildings demolished to create firebreaks. In 1926 a Roman pavement together with many artifacts was discovered many feet below the church. Restored in the late 19th century, All Hallows was gutted by The Blitz in World War II and required extensive reconstruction, only being rededicated in 1957. Many portions of the old church survived the war and have been sympathetically restored [2]. Its outer walls are 15th century, with a 7th century Saxon doorway surviving from the original church. Many brasses remain in the interior (where one of London's brass rubbing centres is now located). Three outstanding wooden statues of saints dating from the 15th and 16th centuries can also be found in the church, as can an exquisite font cover which was carved in 1682 by Grinling Gibbons for ₤12, and which is regarded by many as one of the finest pieces of carving in London. In 1999 the AOC Archaeology Group excavated the cemetery and made many significant discoveries[3] . The church has a museum called the Undercroft Museum. All Hallows-by-the-Tower is celebrated and remembered throughout the world in the use of its name both in Dublin (All Hallows College) and in Brisbane, Australia (All Hallows' School). (most text for the description of this episode from Wikipedia). (Opening sequence with street map and aerial photography from Google Maps).

The tower was subsequently rebuilt in Twickenham, where it stands today. In 1951, most of the bells were retuned, and several were recast. Then, in 1988, two new bells were added, while the older bells found a new home at St. John the Baptist in Windsor.
Ringing these bells is an enjoyable experience, though there are occasional surprises. The movement in the tower can cause the bells to drop unexpectedly. The sound they produce is impressive, especially from the tenor bell, although the smaller bells tend to be quieter, which can be a bit disappointing. Despite this, the experience of ringing here is always memorable.
