In organic chemistry, an alkene is an unsaturated hydrocarbon that contains at least one carbon–carbon double bond. Alkene, olefin, and olefine are used often interchangeably (see nomenclature section below). Acyclic alkenes, with only one double bond and no other functional groups, known as mono-enes, form a homologous series of hydrocarbons with the general formula CnH2n. Alkenes have two hydrogen atoms less than the corresponding alkane (with the same number of carbon atoms). The simplest alkene, ethylene (C2H4), which has the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) name ethene is the organic compound produced on the largest scale industrially.Aromatic compounds are often drawn as cyclic alkenes, but their structure and properties are different and they are not considered to be alkenes.
Structure
Bonding
Like a single covalent bond, double bonds can be described in terms of overlapping atomic orbitals, except that, unlike a single bond (which consists of a single sigma bond), a carbon–carbon double bond consists of one sigma bond and one pi bond. This double bond is stronger than a single covalent bond (611kJ/mol for C=C vs. 347kJ/mol for C–C) and also shorter with an average bond length of 1.33 Angstroms (133 pm).
Today Hank talks about the deliciousness of alkenes & alkynes, their structures, and how to remember which is which by simply knowing the alphabet. Also, he breaks down hydrogenation, halogenation, polymerization, and triglycerides all while helping us figure out the meaning of different names for fats.

In this video, we take a closer look at alkenes. We look at the general formula for alkenes and then look at how alkenes are unsaturated hydrocarbons.

Chemists from the National University of Singapore (NUS) have developed a straightforward method to convert common chemicals like carboxylic acids, alcohols, and alkanes directly into valuable alkenes.
Trisubstituted alkenes are major constituents of biologically active molecules and serve as key substrates for a broad range of stereospecific reactions that form sp3-hybridized scaffolds.
The easily accessible alkene component also has to be pre-activated by converting it into an alcohol or carboxylic acid ... "It would be better to directly use dinitrogen and alkenes to synthesize alkyl amines under mild conditions," he adds.
The photoisomerization of E-alkenes to produce Z-alkenes has many applications in the fields of organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, and medicinal chemistry. Many studies have explored different methods for photoisomerization of E-to-Z alkenes.
Direct conversion of readily available alkenes into high-value alcohols is important but challenging in both organic synthesis and industry. One-pot reductive hydroformylation of alkenes provides a ...
Two new catalytic methods can produce a broad range of Z- and E-alkenes with remarkable cross-selectivity, paving the way for more efficient organic syntheses ....
