Alison Doody (born 11 November 1966) is an Irish actress and model. After making her feature film debut with a small part in Bond film A View to a Kill (1985), she went on to play Nazi-sympathising archaeologist Elsa Schneider, in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989). Other roles include Siobhan Donavan in A Prayer for the Dying (1987), Charlotte in Taffin (1988) and Rebecca Flannery in Major League II (1994).
Early life
The youngest of three children, Doody was born in Dublin, Ireland. Her mother, Joan, was a beauty therapist, and her father Patrick, worked in the property business and farmed. Doody attended Mount Anville Secondary School.
Career
Approached by a photographer, Doody took up modelling, which turned into a career in commercial modelling. Doody stringently avoided glamour and nude work — a clause which she extended to her acting career.
Having come to the attention of the casting director of a new James Bond film, she accepted a small part as Jenny Flex in 1985's A View to a Kill. Doody was listed as one of 12 Promising New Actors of 1986 in John Willis' Screen World, Vol. 38. Still only 18 when she appeared in the role, Doody was – and remains – the youngest Bond girl to date. Another early movie was a small part as IRA member Siobhan Donovan in A Prayer for the Dying (1987), which starred Mickey Rourke.
John Rhys-Davies was born on 5 May 1944 in Salisbury, England, and was raised in Ammanford, Wales. His mother, Mary Margaretta Phyllis Jones, was a nurse, and his father, Rhys Davies, was a mechanical engineer and Colonial Officer. In the early 1950s his family lived for several years in Kongwa, Dar es Salaam, Moshi and Mwanza Tanzania, while his father was serving there as a colonial Police officer. He was educated at Truro School and at the University of East Anglia where he was one of the first 87 students admitted, and where he founded the Dramatic Society. After teaching at Watton County Secondary School in Norfolk he won a place at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
One of the most prolific Welsh prose writers of the 20th century, Davies wrote approximately one hundred short stories, as well as twenty novels, three novellas, two books about Wales and an autobiography. Though he lived largely in London, Davies' work is often set in Wales, typically either in a fictionalised Rhondda or further west in his rural stories.
Davies was born on 9 November 1901 in Blaenclydach, a side-valley of the Rhondda. His father was a grocer and his mother a schoolteacher. His parents spoke Welsh, but did not pass it on to Rhys or his siblings. Rhys Davies's younger brother, Lewis Davies, was a Welsh librarian and philanthropist. As a child he attended Gosen Chapel, and later switched to St Thomas's Church, but ultimately declared himseld an atheist in later life. He attended Porth County School, but left at fourteen and worked for his parents' shop. He briefly worked in Cardiff at a corn-merchant's warehouse before moving to London, where he began his literary career with the publication of a number of short stories. The publisher Charles Lahr published some of Davies' early work in The New Coterie, a small avant-garde magazine. In 1927 Davies published his first short story collection The Song of Songs and first novel The Withered Root. The Withered Root had a favourable critical reception, receiving good reviews and published in an American edition. He received an advance for his second novel that helped him remain a full-time writer.
He was born John Rees at Ponterwyd in Ceredigion, to a lead miner and farmer, Hugh Rees, and his wife. Rhys was educated at schools in Pantyffynnon and Ponterwyd before moving to the British School, a recently opened institution at Penllwyn, in 1855. Here Rhys was enrolled as a pupil and teacher, and after leaving studied at Bangor Normal College from 1860 to 1861. Upon leaving Bangor Normal College, Rhys gained employment as headmaster at Rhos-y-bol, Anglesey. It was here that Rhys was introduced to Dr Charles Williams, then the Principal of Jesus College, Oxford, in 1865. This meeting eventually led to Rhys being accepted into the college, where he studied literae humaniores. In 1869, he was elected to a fellowship at Merton College.
Rhys also travelled and studied in Europe during this period, staying in Paris, Heidelberg, Leipzig, and Göttingen. He attended lectures by Georg Curtius and August Leskien whilst in Leipzig, and it was during this period that his interest in philology and linguistics developed. Rhys matriculated from Leipzig in 1871, and it was around this time that he adopted the Welsh spelling of his name. He returned to Wales as a government inspector of schools, covering Flint and Denbigh, and he settled in Rhyl. Rhys also began to write, with articles on the grammar of the Celtic language and articles on the glosses in the Luxembourg manuscript being printed, the latter in the Revue Celtique. In 1872 Rhys married Elspeth Hughes-Davies.

Irish actress Alison Doody (Elsa Schneider in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade) and Dame Helen Mirren only have praise for former co-star Harrison Ford. Their comments were recorded in 2006 as part of a program called "The Hollywood Greats" on BBC1. The interview was conducted by Jonathan Ross.
This is an exclusive panel from Wales Comic Con November 2023 with two stars of the Indiana Jones movies - Paul Freeman, who played rival archaeologist René Belloq in Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Alison Doody who played Elsa Schneider in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. They both have wonderful stories about their time working on the franchise, from being covered in rats to dealing with snakes and working with Harrison Ford and Sean Connery. An amazing panel hosted by the brilliant Dr Rhys Jones (who is, of course, also a HUGE Indy fan himself!) #IndianaJones
Pierce Brosnan leaves Remington Steele behind and is in Ireland to make the $5 million gangster film ‘Taffin’.
On the set of ‘Taffin’ Pierce Brosnan talks about the film in which his character is an ex-priest turned debt collector. Brosnan also says that he is pleased to be finished with the American television series ‘Remington Steele’ after five years.
Pierce Brosnan plays the lead role and sports a very different image to Remington Steele.
The film also features Irish actor Alison Doody who plays Charlotte.
Speaking about Remington Steele, Pierce expresses his regret about the special edition of the show filmed in Ireland. When the episode was broadcast,
"RTÉ received a torrent of outraged phonecalls complaining about the phoney accents and the staged twee Irishness which was embarrassing to watch."
Pierse was also embarrassed by the depiction of the Irish in the episode. He is very happy to be finished with Remington Steele after playing the role for five years.
"Apologies to Irish people, to all of Ireland."
An RTÉ News report broadcast on 21 August 1987. The reporter is Teresa Mannion.
Alison Doody and John Rhys-Davies answer questions in their Q&A panel.

Hollywood actor John Rhys-Davies sits down to talk about the legacy of Lord of the Rings, the upcoming Indiana Jones film and living on the Isle of Man.

Would He, would He have spared us all if He'd been more kind Most never find what they need Plagued by free will they watch their spirits die You call this design? But does a man's confusion Prove there's a contradiction? It may to that one It's caused so much commotion Cause no ones found a good solution, could there not be one? Creation seems like God's game to keep himself amused We tend to loose our patience We think an explanation's overdue But who would that soothe? So in our irritation We assume revelation has been given to none And divine inspiration is gone out on a prolonged vacation With faith from when we were young We're here and we wait for love from anyone But we can't see Him Most of us, we just close our eyes Cause we think he died in our learning Could it be, He's been here all along But our hearts were wrong to receive Him Could it be He waits with open arms
