Alice Springs/ˌælᵻsˈsprɪŋz/ (Arrernte: Mparntwe) is the third largest town in the Northern Territory, Australia. Popularly known as "the Alice" or simply "Alice", Alice Springs is situated in the geographic centre of Australia.
The site is known as Mparntwe to its original inhabitants, the Arrernte, who have lived in the Central Australian desert in and around what is now Alice Springs for thousands of years. "Alice" in the English language was named by surveyor William Whitfield Mills after Lady Alice Todd (née Alice Gillam Bell), wife of the telegraph pioneer Sir Charles Todd. Alice Springs has a population of 28,605, which makes up 12.2 percent of the territory's population. Alice Springs is nearly equidistant from Adelaide and Darwin.
The town straddles the usually dry Todd River on the northern side of the MacDonnell Ranges. The surrounding region is known as Central Australia, or the Red Centre, an arid environment consisting of several different deserts. In Alice Springs temperatures can vary dramatically, with an average maximum temperature in summer of 35.6°C (96.1°F) and an average minimum temperature in winter of 5.1°C (41.2°F). Alice Springs has faced many issues in recent years, largely stemming from an increase in crime and a strong racial divide that has existed for years in the town.
June Newton (née Browne, 1923) is an Australian actress and photographer. As an actress she was known professionally as June Brunell and won the Erik Kuttner Award for Best Actress in 1956. Since 1970 she has worked as a photographer under the pseudonym Alice Springs. Her photographs have appeared in publications such as Vanity Fair, Interview, Elle and Vogue.
She is the widow of fashion photographer Helmut Newton.
Biography
Modelling and acting
June Browne, a Melbourne native, first met Berlin-born photographer Helmut Newton in 1947 at his studio in Melbourne. Browne was working as an actress under the surname Brunell (to avoid confusion with a local actress named June Brown) and had answered an ad for some modelling work at Helmut's studio. The couple were married the following year.
June Newton, still acting under the surname Brunell, won the Erik Kuttner Award for Best Actress in 1956, an award handed out for excellence in theatre in Melbourne. Although she was finding success in Australia as an actress, Helmut was offered a year-long contract with British Vogue and the couple moved to London in 1957. While there, June found acting work with the BBC. Helmut did not enjoy his time there and the couple left England.

Australians get a bad rap overseas, and our stocks seem especially low in India. In fact, a sizeable chunk of India's 1.2 billion people think Aussies are dumb, drunk and racist. In this six-part factual series, journalist Joe Hildebrand takes four Indians on a road trip around Australia to examine our worst stereotypes -- are we really beer-swilling, racist bogans, or are we simply misunderstood? Shot on location in India and across Australia, this series puts its Indian protagonists smack bang in the middle of passionate debates and immersive experiences that could change their opinion of Australia forever. Alice Springs City Tour | The "heart" of the Australian Outback | Australia
This is a brief tour of Alice Springs, a remote Northern Territory (NT) town often referred to as the "heart" of the red centre / Australian outback!
We stayed here an entire month! In today's vlog we visit the visit the Alice Springs entry sign, the old Ghan train, ANZAC Hill, the Telegraph Station, and the Alice Springs CBD (Central Business District) - which was unfortunately mostly closed on our visit.

Had Alice Springs changed since I was last here 40 years earlier? Uluru had. It's no longer called Ayers Rock, and you can no longer climb it. Blair walks away happy from Lassiters Casino. I also witness both the northbound and southbound Ghan trains.

Alice Springs youth crime: Tiny menaces stuck on turnstile of trouble (Watch)
It’s 8pm in Alice Springs and a group of children are about to steal a car and lead police on a dangerous chase. After being caught they are immediately returned to a ‘responsible adult’, only to continue to reoffend.
It’s a pattern the residents of Alice Springs are well and truly used to. On one night last December, eight vehicles were being driven around town by out of control children and teenagers.
It’s just over 12 months since this city became the focus of national attention over out-of-control crime, but on the ground, locals say it’s never been worse.

Australians get a bad rap overseas, and our stocks seem especially low in India. In fact, a sizeable chunk of India's 1.2 billion people think Aussies are dumb, drunk and racist. But doesn't every country have its negative stereotypes? In this six-part factual series, journalist Joe Hildebrand takes four Indians on a road trip around Australia to examine our worst stereotypes -- are we really beer-swilling, racist bogans, or are we simply misunderstood? Shot on location in India and across Australia, this series puts its Indian protagonists smack bang in the middle of passionate debates and immersive experiences that could change their opinion of Australia forever. After three weeks of seeing the good, the bad and the ugly up close, will our intrepid Indian travellers still think that Australians are dumb, drunk and racist? And what will we think of ourselves, after seeing Australia through their eyes?

We live by the mantra "You don't need to see the whole staircase, just take the first step!"
We also mention how to find/purchase Aboriginal art from local artists, as well as several other attractions in and around Alice Springs including the Alice Springs Desert Park (Territory Wildlife Park), the Olive Pink Botanic Garden, the Alice Springs Reptile Center, and the Kangaroo Sanctuary.
Alice Springs is known as a gateway to explore the rest of Australia's "red centre", and is also a great launching point for road trips around the outback, such as the world-famous Uluru!
We're Brandi & Alan, full-time travelers and creators since 2018. We post fun vlogs and informative guides to both document our travels and help you on your own journey.

Had Alice Springs changed since I was last here 40 years earlier? Uluru had. It's no longer called Ayers Rock, and you can no longer climb it. Blair walks away happy from Lassiters Casino. I also witness both the northbound and southbound Ghan trains.
