The Origins of the Schlieffen Plan | Ross Beadle
This presentation, which was delivered 'live' to an online audience by Ross Beadle is about the famous Schlieffen Plan undertaken by the German army in 1914.
The talk is based on documentation that has emerged since the fall of the Wall. Ross asks why did Germany box herself into a corner with a military strategic plan that demanded a huge gamble on war? Was it Schlieffen's Plan – or Moltke's? Did Moltke's changes to the strategy make it doomed to fail?
We hope to host more 'live' webinars. If you would like to take part in these, please do consider joining The Western Front Association.

The Schlieffen Plan - And Why It Failed I THE GREAT WAR Special feat. AlternateHistoryHub
What would have happened if the Schlieffen Plan had succeeded? Find out on AlternateHistoryHub: http://bit.ly/1VJ9T0U
The Schlieffen Plan was the blueprint for Germany's army to avoid a two-front war with Russia and France. It was supposed to be the solution for a quick victory against arch enemy France by invading Belgium and the Netherlands to circumvent French defenses. Helmut von Moltke adapted the original plan by Alfred von Schlieffen and ultimately failed when the Germans were beaten at the Battle of the Marne. Indy explains the numerous reasons why the Schlieffen Plan was doomed to fail. "

Germany planned for a short war. What went wrong?
When the First World War broke out, Germany had a massive problem. The alliance between France and Russia left them totally surrounded, with only Austria Hungary on their side. Outnumbered, Germany's chances in a long war were slim.
And yet the German Army of 1914 was still confident of victory. In August, they launched a huge enveloping attack through Belgium, smashing the Allied forces in battle after battle, and Germany seemed to be on the brink of victory.
But just as Paris hoved into view, the tide of the battle, and arguably the whole war, changed. French and British forces counterattacked at the Battle of the Marne and forced the Germans back. Leaving their plan for a short war in tatters. So, what went wrong? Why did the German plan fail? And how close did it come to succeedin...
