Following the murder of his paternal half-brother Agathocles by the command of his father in 284 BC, he fled into Asia with his brother's widow Lysandra, and solicited the aid of Seleucus I Nicator. As a consequence, war ensued between Seleucus I and Lysimachus, ending in the defeat and death of the latter, who was slain in battle in 281 BC, in the plain of Corius in Phrygia. Alexander conveyed his father's body to Lysimachia, to be buried in a tomb between Cardia and Pactya, where it still stood in the time of Pausanias, four centuries later.
Lysimachus was born in 362/361 BC, to a family of ThessalianGreek stock. He was the second son of Agathocles and his wife; there is some indication in the historical sources that this wife was perhaps named Arsinoe, and that Lysimachus' paternal grandfather may have been called Alcimachus. His father was a nobleman of high rank who was an intimate friend of Philip II of Macedon, who shared in Philip II’s councils and became a favorite in the Argead court. Lysimachus and his brothers grew up with the status of Macedonians; all these brothers enjoyed with Lysimachus prominent positions in Alexander’s circle and, like him, were educated at the Macedonian court in Pella.
He was probably appointed Somatophylax during the reign of Philip II. During Alexander's Persian campaigns, he was one of his immediate bodyguards. In 324 BC, in Susa, he was crowned in recognition for his actions in India. After Alexander’s death in 323 BC, he was appointed to the government of Thrace as strategos.
Lysimachus also known as Lysimachus Junior (Greek: Λυσίμαχος, 297/296 BC-279 BC) was a Greek Prince from Asia Minor who was of Macedonian and Thessalian descent.
Family Background
Lysimachus was the second son born to Lysimachus and Arsinoe II. He was the namesake of his father. Lysimachus had two full-blooded brothers: an older brother called Ptolemy I Epigone and a younger brother called Philip.
Lysimachus, a general who was a somatophylax of Alexander the Great and later King of Thrace, Macedonia and Asia Minor. Other members of his family include:
his son, Lysimachus, one of the sons from his third wife Arsinoe II
his grandson, Lysimachus of Egypt, one of the sons of Ptolemy II Philadelphus from his first wife Arsinoe I, who was one of the daughters of Lysimachus
his other grandson, Lysimachus of Telmessos, first son of Ptolemy I Epigone who was the first son of Lysimachus from his third wife Arsinoe II
his great-grandson, Lysimachus one of the sons of Berenice II and Ptolemy III Euergetes who was a brother of Lysimachus of Egypt
Alexander III of Macedon (20/21 July 356 BC – 10/11 June 323 BC), commonly known as Alexander the Great (Greek:Ἀλέξανδρος ὁ Μέγας, Aléxandros ho Mégas[a.lék.san.dros ho mé.gas], from the Greek ἀλέξω (alexō) "defend" and ἀνδρ- (andr-), the stem of ἀνήρ (anēr) "man" and means "protector of men"), was a King (Basileus) of the Ancient Greekkingdom of Macedon
and a member of the Argead dynasty, an ancient Greek royal house. Born in Pella in 356 BC, Alexander succeeded his father, Philip II, to the throne at the age of twenty. He spent most of his ruling years on an unprecedented military campaign through Asia and northeast Africa, and by the age of thirty he had created one of the largest empires of the ancient world, stretching from Greece to Egypt into northwest India and modern-day Pakistan. He was undefeated in battle and is widely considered one of history's most successful military commanders.
During his youth, Alexander was tutored by the philosopher Aristotle until the age of 16. After Philip's assassination in 336BC, Alexander succeeded his father to the throne and inherited a strong kingdom and an experienced army. Alexander was awarded the generalship of Greece and used this authority to launch his father's Panhellenic project to lead the Greeks in the conquest of Persia. In 334 BC, he invaded the Achaemenid Empire, ruled Asia Minor, and began a series of campaigns that lasted ten years. Alexander broke the power of Persia in a series of decisive battles, most notably the battles of Issus and Gaugamela. He subsequently overthrew the Persian King Darius III and conquered the Achaemenid Empire in its entirety. At that point, his empire stretched from the Adriatic Sea to the Indus River.
AllMusic rated the album with 4 stars and reviewer Scott Yanow noted: "Even at that early stage, Alexander had very impressive technique and his Oscar Peterson-influenced style was starting to become distinctive".
The Life Of Lysimachus The Elite BodyGuard Of Alexander The Great
Born around 360 BC in Pella, the capital of Macedonia, Lysimachus was the son of Agathocles, a nobleman with connections to the Macedonian royal court. Like many young men of his status, Lysimachus would have been trained in the arts of war and diplomacy, disciplines that would serve him well in the years to come.
