In a time before Sonic the Hedgehog existed, Sega had something of an identity problem. Nintendo, their biggest rival, already had a mascot in the form of Mario, who was a massively bankable character even back then.
By comparison, Sega didn't really have any kind of character who was synonymous with the brand, at least not one that had any kind of universal appeal. Technically, Opa-Opa from Fantasy Zone was their mascot at the time, but a spaceship with wings and feet didn't seem like such hot property when faced with the might of the Mario juggernaut!
Alex Kidd in Miracle World is the first game that I remember featuring the character, largely because it came bundled with the Master System II console (built into ROM) released in the UK and other parts of the world.
The game features a highly convoluted and, frankly, weird plot, especially for a platform game. In essence, Alex Kidd is searching for his long lost brother, now hostage of Janken the Great, tyrant and ruler of the world of Radaxian. Just to make things worse, the normal, peace-loving citizens of Radaxian have all been turned to stone by Janken. It's up to Alex to locate his brother and defeat Janken to free the land from his evil grip.
If that wasn't strange enough for you, Alex has dedicated his life to studying the ancient technique of ShellCore, a martial arts skill that enables him to increase the size and power of his fist (sounds a bit like Marvel's Iron Fist to me).
The game is a side-scrolling platform game/collect-em-up that looks and feels similar to Nintendo's Super Mario Brothers in a number of ways.
Many of the levels feature numerous blocks and boulders that block Alex's path and must be removed to progress. Fortunately, Alex is in possession of both the necessary martial arts skills, as well as a massively over-sized fist, to get the job done. Certain blocks will reveal bags of cash that can be collected (to be spent in one of the game's shops), whilst others might reveal special items, or even enemies.
At the start of certain stages, Alex will find a shop where he can exchange his money for extra items and power-ups. Sometimes, these include a mode of transport, such as a car or helicopter that allows him to traverse a level much more quickly than on foot. Levels featuring the vehicles often have obstacles that will cause Alex to forfeit the vehicle when hit, so you should always be careful how fast you try to travel when using one.
Later levels in the game, such as the castle, tend to be less linear than earlier stages and feature items that progress the game's story and certain points. It's very easy to miss these items if you're not careful and certain characters won't reveal parts of the plot without them.
Of course, the other memorable thing about the game are the fight sequences when Alex must defeat opponents in a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but it's easier to embrace the weirdness than to keep questioning what's happening.
Visually, Alex Kidd in Miracle world is an attractive game that boasts some great graphics, smooth scrolling and an extremely vibrant colour palette; it's certainly a lot more striking than many contemporary games on the NES.
Audio is also very good, boasting many a cheery tune from the console's TI sound chip, helping to keep things interesting throughout.
Whilst Alex Kidd in Miracle World is a fine game, it doesn't quite have the same appeal as Super Mario Brothers. I know they're different styles of games, but I find it easier to relate to a slightly chubby, Italian plumber than the weird, human-chimp hybrid with over-sized ears that Alex Kidd appears to be.
Weirdness aside, if you're looking for a solid platformer with plenty of content that will keep you entertained for a few hours then Alex Kidd in Miracle world is certainly worth a look.

Alex Kidd was a mascot of sorts for Sega, seemingly designed to challenge Mario. He starred in six games total, most being platformers, but it seems that he really never made the leap to 16-bit as well as Sega had hoped. Enchanted Castle was the sole game in the series to be made for the Genesis. The final game, Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, marked a return to the Master System.
Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle has you guiding your monkey-boy through eleven platforming stages, collecting coins and fleeing in terror from everything that moves. Alex is a bit fragile, you see - a single hit kills him outright - and since a short-range punch is his only standard means of attack, it's often not a good idea to stand your ground and do battle.
There are powerups that can help, though. Alex can win items, like cars and pogo-sticks, that will temporarily give him a boost to make it past certain obstacles or enemies (they are godsends in the final stage!), and he can find secret bonus areas that are loaded with gold if you find yourself chewing through your items too fast.
The feature that Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle seems to be best known (and most reviled) for is the Rock, Paper, Scissors-style battles that you must win to get items and to beat bosses (and if you've place Princess Tomato in Salad Kingdom, you'll be quite familiar with this!). It's neat for how different of an approach this is to a standard action-based boss fight, but c'mon, Sega. Leaving things to blind luck seems a bit unfair, doesn't it?
Besides that inclusion, though, the gameplay is fine. It's a bit mundane and uninspired, but I found it to be fun. Most of the stages are extremely short, so once you memorize where the item blocks and the enemies are, it becomes pretty easy to tear through in no time at all. I think I can see why Sega went back to the Master System for three final Alex Kidd game, though. Enchanted Castle feels like an 8-bit game with more color and nicer music, and the move to the Genesis put expectations upon the game that it couldn't really live up to. Still, it does look and sound nice for a Genesis game from 1989.
If you don't mind the dated gameplay and the corny Janken mini-games, Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle can make for an entertaining, nostalgic couple of hours. It's no classic, nor even particularly great, but it is an interesting symbol of a past that Sega was quickly distancing itself from in order to fight its battles with Nintendo.

Quite a few mistakes, but still a good run. I've calculated that a Potential (realistic) time save of about 17.9 seconds is possible through flawlessness, but for now, I'm done with the game till someone beats it!
Here is the possible time saves if anyone wants to attempt to beat this run:
Lv 1 - 0.7 s (Slightly non-perfect descent; a 28 is very doable)
Lv 2 - /
Lv 3 - 0.2 s (Clipped slightly going past the first octopus, didn't punch the three block smoothly)
Lv 4 - /
Lv 5 - 0.1 s (Bumped the helicopter into the red block slightly late)
Lv 6 - 0.8 s (Lost nearly two seconds from the messed up jump, but then made back a second by killing the boss faster than I've ever killed it before!)
Lv 7 - 1.3 s (Slight misfire midway through the Lv nearly cost me, but I managed to recover well)
Lv 8 - / (Note that sometimes I will not buy the Cane on this Lv, which is why I lose 2.5 seconds against my previous PB)
Lv 9 - /
Lv 10 - 6.3 s (TBH, I thought the run-killer had killed my run; I was very close to resetting. The rest of the Lv was almost optimal)
Lv 11 - 0.3 s (Slightly non-optimal descent after the three Flames)
Lv 12 - / (Pulled off my new Fast-Route for the boss)
Lv 13 - 0.8 s (I get through all the bits that normally kill me, then I mess up the final manoeuvre to destroy the Heli. D'oh!)
Lv 14 - /
Lv 15 - / (I seem to be landing that 5th jump 100% of the time now. Also, this is where I make back that 2.5 seconds from not buying the Cane)
Lv 16 - 7.2 s (A few non-perfect jumps early on; One fall during the 'U-Turn of failed runs' (which is acceptable); Aced the run-killing jump (you know which jump I mean); Messed up the double punch on the shower fall (which nearly killed me); Lost the most amount of time missing the earliest frog-jump cycle; Aced the Flower-Prong section in the water; Didn't quite get the optimal route during the 'Shark's Tooth' section; The rest of the Lv could have been done a bit quicker)
Lv 17 - 0.2 s (I think I lost time by not jumping onto the first block After spawning in the Crown, I'm not sure...)
Total time save possible - 17.9 seconds
Note that this is *not* a comparison against my sum of best, this is just my estimated realistic time saves that I think is possible based on the errors I made.
Also, note that I cannot accurately say what the best Lv 16 time should be; I haven't been able to perfect the level on a timed run to see what potential time save I'm looking at. I did manage to almost perfect the lv once, dying only during the 'Shark's Tooth' section underwater, costing me about 6.5 seconds (and that run was 0.5 seconds faster than the run posted above, so my best guess is that a seven second time save is possible if you do everything *perfectly*).
Overall, I think that the best time achievable would be around the 13:07 mark, but a sub 13:10 should definitely be possible.
