Aldwych is a closed station on the London Underground, located in the City of Westminster in Central London. It was opened in 1907 with the name Strand, after the street on which it is located, and was the terminus of the short Piccadilly line branch from Holborn that was a relic of the merger of two railway schemes. The station building is close to the Strand's junction with Surrey Street, near Aldwych. During its lifetime, the branch was the subject of a number of unrealised extension proposals that would have seen the tunnels through the station extended southwards, usually to Waterloo.
Served mostly by a shuttle train and suffering from low passenger numbers, the station and branch were considered for closure several times. Service was offered only during weekday peak hours from 1962 and finally discontinued altogether in 1994, when the cost of replacing the lifts was considered too high for the income generated.
Disused parts of the station and the running tunnels were used during both world wars to shelter artworks from London's public galleries and museums from bombing. The station has long been popular as a filming location and has appeared as itself and as other London Underground stations in a number of films. In recognition of its historical significance, the station is a Grade II listed building.
Aldwych (pronounced /ˈɔːldwɪtʃ/) is a one-way street and also the name of the area immediately surrounding the street, in the City of Westminster in London. The short street is situated 0.6 miles (1km) north-east of Charing Cross and forms part of the A4 route from London to Avonmouth, Bristol.
The Aldwych area forms part of the Northbank business improvement district. It is known for a number of notable sites and for giving its name to a closed Underground station nearby, which has been used as a filming location in numerous films and television shows.
Overview
Aldwych, the street, is a crescent, connected to the Strand at both ends. It forms part of the A4 route and carries traffic in a one-way eastbound direction. Streets adjoining Aldwych include Drury Lane, Kingsway, India Place and Melbourne Place. Notable buildings along its length include:
India House, the High Commission of India in London
The Kingsway area had been redeveloped at the start of the 20th century from slums and tenement housing into a broad avenue with grand office buildings and expensive town houses.
After the formation of the Air Ministry in 1918, its headquarters was on Kingsway; one of two identical buildings opposite Bush House became Adastral House. This remained the home of the Air Ministry through World War II. It became famous after the war because the central London temperatures and wind speeds were measured from its roof by the Met Office, and announced as such during the BBC weather forecasts.
Television House
In 1954, the Independent Television Authority (ITA) awarded the first two contracts for the new ITV commercial television system. Because the BBC had previously held a monopoly on broadcasting, there were no non-BBC television studio facilities in the UK. Associated-Rediffusion, as one of the two contractors, needed to build from scratch a whole new facility. The company had hired Thomas Brownrigg as General Manager, partially due to his extensive knowledge of planning and project management, which would be needed in simultaneously building a new company and its studios and headquarters.

The New Tube Train For London is Here!
The Piccadilly Line is getting New Tube Trains! Built by Siemens, they'll be in passenger service in 2025. We got an invite out to their test track acility in Germany to go and have a ride on the first one off of the production line.
A total of 94 trains are on order, with half of them being made at a new Siemens factory at Goole in Yorkshire. I made a visit to the Goole factory last year, which you can watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCMZqprWIU4

We were all restricted to seeing just the front carriage of the train, which meant we couldn't go and see one of the shorter carriages, nor check out the accessible area of the train which we would've liked to have seen.

My Final Year University Project - A Trip Down Aldwych.
The London Underground has undergone many changes since its conception; lines and stations close to be replaced by newer, more efficient ones. But what actually becomes of these closed down stations? Do any still exist now? If so, what would it be like to visit one...?
This video takes you on a visual journey through Aldwych, a disused station on a now defunct branch of the Piccadilly Line. I produced this as part of my 'TV Production' course at Bournemouth University. It was awarded a first.
For more information on disused stations on the London Underground please visit http://underground-history.co.uk

Inside Aldwych, London's abandoned Underground station
Business Insider was given a tour of London's abandoned Aldwych Underground station.
The station has quite the history, opening in 1907 and serving as a bomb shelter during the Blitz in the 1940s. It was also used as a hiding place for some of the British Museum's treasures including the Elgin Marbles.
The station used to provide services to the Picadilly line, having only one stop to Holborn, which is around a 10-minute walk away. The station was eventually closed in 1994, due to heavy maintenance costs.
The station is now used for various forms of training by different organisations - including the fire brigade and the police - and public tours from the museum.
Hollywood movies are also filmed in the station, previously providing scenes for "V for Vendetta" and "Atonement."

London best afternoon tea - Charlie and the chocolate factory at One Aldwych
One of the best places for afternoon tea in London - the One Aldwych afternoon tea with a brilliant Charlie and the Chocolate Factory theme.
Set in the restaurant of the beautiful 5 Star London hotel, this is an afternoon tea experience like no other and a great thing to do in London.
Firstly, choose from one of the innovative teas. Keeping with the theme, I tried the chocolate noir which was delicious with the perfect hint of chocolate. Joe has the lemon verbena which he also enjoyed.

The savouries were some of the best we've ever had at a London afternoon tea, and true to the classic Roald Dahl story, nothing was quite as it seemed, so no boring sandwiches in sight! Instead, the unexpected flavours and textures made these savouries truly spectacular. Luckily there was unlimited refills as we had to have more!! Perhaps somewhat of an acquired taste, I particularly loved the salmon and beetroot macaron.
But the standout course was of course the sweet stuff! The presentation was incredible and the nods to the story was within every cake. Our favourites were the blueberry tart and white chocolate cremeux.
Let us know if you've been or if you plan to go!

About Love and London:
I'm Jess, I've lived in London for many years, and this channel is a London travel guide for anyone visiting the city that wants to experience it like you live here. Beyond talking about the usual London attractions, myself and my team show you some of the cooler things to do in London, that most travel guides don't mention. Watch our videos and you'll feel like you've got a Londoner friend telling you the best kept secrets in the city.
NOTE
We were all restricted to seeing just the front carriage of the train, which meant we couldn't go and see one of the shorter carriages, nor check out the accessible area of the train which we would've liked to have seen.

"Wish You Were Here" by Dyalla and Joakim Karud
