Join us for a very special journey along the Rhaetian Railway's spectacular Albula Line from the city of Chur to the internationally famous resort of St. Moritz. We make the trip in a mixed passenger goods train hauled by one of the historic Ge 6/6 I "baby crocodile" locomotives, which were running on a daily basis in 1989, but which now only haul special excursions.
We begin our journey at Chur, capital of the Canton of Graubünden, and look around the old city before boarding our train. This is the original line of the RhB and was constructed through some particularly difficult terrain, so the way passes through numerous tunnels and over some spectacular viaducts, including the Solis and Landwasser, which are amongst the most photographed bridges in Switzerland.
After Filisur the line becomes especially steep and in order to avoid rack assistance the railway builders utilised spiral tunnels and loops along the valley sides. The summit of the line is in a 5 kilometre long tunnel.
Along the way we pause to look at some of the traditional villages and join in with special celebrations held to mark the centenary of the line.
Journey's end is at the popular resort of St. Moritz, situated in the Engadine valley beside the lake which bears its name. Our run with the "crocodile" is now an archive journey and a reminder of the history of the route.

* Einige Teile in diesem Video wackeln etwas.

Cosa: RhB Bahnmuseum Albula

The Albula Pass (Romansh: Pass d'Alvra, German: Albulapass) (el. 2312 m) is a Swiss mountain pass in the canton of Graubünden. It lies at the heart of the Albula Alps, on the watershed between the Albula, tributary of the Rhine and the Ova d'Alvra, tributary of the Inn. Overlooking the pass are the ranges of Piz Üertschan d Crasta Mora.
The Albula Pass is an important axis from central Graubünden to Engadin. It is traversed by a paved road from Thusis to La Punt, via Bergün. It is also traversed by the Albula Railway, although at a lower elevation through the Albula Tunnel (1820 m), from Thusis to Bever, also via Bergün.
The Albula Pass is one of the three paved road passes connecting the Engadin with the northern Grisons, the two other being the Julier Pass (https://youtu.be/U1fumy4vIE8) and the Flüela Pass (https://youtu.be/Rwcuwf6Eous)
In the early days when divine law governed human affairs, Rome's river deity was known as Albula...Livy claims it derives from Tiberinus Silvius, a king of Alba Longa who drowned in the river Albula, becoming both its deity and namesake.
Supposedly he drowned while crossing the river Albula. In honor of his death, it was renamed and became the famous river Tiber. In Dionysius’s version of events, Tiberinus died in battle and his body was carried down the river.
