The Albertine Rift and the mountains are the result of tectonic movements that are gradually splitting the Somali Plate away from the rest of the African continent. The mountains surrounding the rift are composed of uplifted Pre-Cambrianbasement rocks, overlaid in parts by recent volcanic rocks.
Lakes and rivers
The northern part of the rift is crossed by two large mountain ranges, the Rwenzori Mountains between Lake Albert and Lake Rutanzige (formerly Lake Edward) and the Virunga Mountains between Lake Rutanziga and Lake Kivu. The Virungas form a barrier between the Nile Basin to the north and east and the Congo Basin to the west and south. Lake Rutenzige is fed by several large rivers, the Rutshuru River being one, and drains to the north through the Semliki River into Lake Albert. The Victoria Nile flows from Lake Victoria into the northern end of Lake Albert and exits as the White Nile from a point slightly to the west, flowing north to the Mediterranean.
The Albertine Rift is one of the most important biodiversity hotspots on the continent. 31 of its nearly 300 mammal species and 35 of its 900 bird species are found nowhere else on earth! It is also the area in Africa holding the highest number of threatened and endemic birds and mammals.
Wilderness Safaris believes that we can help make a difference to biodiversity conservation here and for this reason have partnered with the Bisate community in the reforestation of an iconic site outside Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda.
It is clear that the future conservation of mountain gorillas and many other Albertine Rift endemics depends on the integration of local communities into the conservation economy. This is something we hope to achieve through the development and operation of a luxury l...

The Incredible Biodiversity of the Albertine Rift Ecosystem | One Tree Planted

We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve partnered with the Jane Goodall Institute to plant 3 million trees as part of their “Wildlife Habitat & Corridor Restoration Project.” This will support long-term and large-scale restoration of the Albertine Rift Forests that stretch across Uganda. In addition to planting 3 million seedlings, 700 households will be trained and supported to apply sustainable agroforestry practices on their land — and each village involved will have at least one trained forest monitor.

Life Force 2: Africa's Albertine Rift
Life Force is a breath-taking, blue-chip documentary series that celebrates and explores the unusual, the unexpected ... and the downright bizarre. This series reveals incredible habitats where nature has allowed eccentric animals, eclectic lifestyles and unorthodox patterns of behavior to flourish through the miracle of natural selection and the magic of evolution.
Africa's Albertine Rift: Africa is being ripped in half by tectonic upheaval. The same forces that have driven the ancient continent apart have also left many unique species to evolve in relative isolation. Evolutionary oddities like lungfish, shoebill, okapi and siafu or Africa's killer ant are all found in this region. Here, Chimpanzees and Bonobos show vastly different social bahaviours -- separated by the Congo river, coul...

The Albertine Rift ranks #1 out of 119 eco-regions on continental Africa for its endemic species of birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians, and #2 for its globally threatened species. In fact, it supports 50% of birds, 39% of mammals, 19% of amphibians, 14% of reptiles, and 14% of plants on Africa’s mainland.
It’s also — you guessed it — a prominent habitat for endangered chimpanzees. In fact, the two reserves where we’ll concentrate our efforts (The Budongo and Bugomo Central Forest Reserves) house a combined 1,000 chimpanzees. Why is this so key? While they numbered around 1 million at the turn of the century, their numbers have been drastically reduced — by over 730,000. And unfortunately, current trends indicate that African ape populations will decline by an additional 80% in the next 30-40 years.
Clearly, bold action is needed! And fortunately, we have just the thing. Science has proven that the long-term population viability of threatened species like chimpanzees is enhanced if connections between fragmented forest blocks are maintained via wildlife corridors linking small forest reserves, private forests and grasslands in intervening landscapes.
