The bloodless coup which had been executed the previous day was followed by the suspension of the Sierra Leonean Constitution, the dissolution of Parliament and the taking into protective custody of key political leaders.
The country's Governor-General Sir Henry Lightfoot Boston was put under house arrest, while the two main political protagonists, Siaka Stevens, the man Boston swore in as Prime Minister after the country's recent closely-contested general election and Stevens' political rival, Sir Albert Margai, the country's former prime minister, were taken into protective custody.
The NRC seized power in a 'counter-coup'. The initial coup had been led by Brigadier David Lansana, but he was put into detention by his own officers. Major Charles Blake, a member of the NRC, who said in a broadcast that the officers believed Brigadier Lansana had been trying "to impose Sir Albert Margai as Prime Minister of this country".
Brigadier Lansana had seized control of the country and declared martial law after accusing the Governor-General of acting unconstitutionally in naming Mr. Stevens Prime Minister.
The army officers were supported by the police force. The Deputy chairman of the NRC was named as Mr. William Leigh, the commissioner of police.
Note:
1. Lt. Col. Genda served as the Chairman of the NRC for three days before giving up his position to Lt. Col. Andrew Juxon-Smith.
2. The NRC was itself overthrown the following year by a group of junior officers led by John Amadu Bangura who restored Sierra Leone to rule by parliament under Siaka Stevens.
