He finally made his Arsenal debut on 21 November 1992 as a substitute (the first ever Arsenal goalkeeper to come on as a sub) and made another seven appearances over the next two seasons. He won FA Cup and League Cup winners' medals in 1992–93 and a European Cup Winners' Cup medal in 1993–94, as an unused substitute each time.
In the summer of 1994, wanting first team football, Miller moved to Middlesbrough for £500,000, winning a First Division winners' medal in his first season.
In 1997, he signed for West Bromwich Albion in a £400,000 deal, before moving on to Blackburn Rovers in 2000. He played only two games during his time at Ewood Park, against Sheffield United in the league and Portsmouth in the League Cup. While at Blackburn he went on loan at Bristol City and Coventry City during 2000–01. His only appearance at Coventry was one to forget, as he came on as a substitute against Chelsea after Chris Kirkland was sent off. Coventry went on to lose 6–1. In October 2001 he was loaned out again, this time to St Johnstone. He was recalled from his loan spell at St Johnstone to take his place on the bench as Blackburn won the 2002 Football League Cup Final, providing back-up to Brad Friedel, because of injury to regular second-choice goalkeeper Alan Kelly. Miller retired in 2003 after failing to overcome a back injury.
Alan Thomas Miller (1 June 1925 – 9 September 2000) was an Australian rules football coach in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He was senior coach of South Melbourne in 1967 and 1968, one of only a few people who have coached a VFL/AFL club without having been a player in the league.
Miller, who was born in Colac, served with the Royal Australian Navy during World War II. He played amateur football with South Melbourne Districts, then in 1953 and 1954 coached Albert Park in the Melbourne Amateur Sunday Football Association. After steering Albert Park to a premiership in 1954, Miller was coach of the South Melbourne thirds (Under 19s). In Miller's seven years as coach, from 1955 to 1961, South Melbourne finished in the top five every season and won a premiership in 1956. Over the next few years he was a co-ordinating coach for South Melbourne and served on the committee, before returning to the Under 19s for another season in 1966. In November that year he was named as the new senior coach of South Melbourne, to replace Bob Skilton, who had stepped down from the position, but remained with the side as a player.
Miller joined Atari, Inc. in February 1977 and was one of the first four Atari 2600 game designers. His 2600 titles include Surround, Hunt & Score, Hangman and Basketball. With others, he co-authored the operating system for the Atari 400/800/1200 computers in late 1978 and early 1979. His last game for Atari, Basketball, was one of the first ROM games for the Atari computers. Miller did not work on any Atari 2600 cartridges during his last year with Atari.
In late 1979, Miller left Atari with three other programmers, David Crane, Larry Kaplan and Bob Whitehead. They were disillusioned and disappointed with Atari's refusal to give them screen credit for any of the games they worked on. With music industry executive, Jim Levy, they formed Activision, the first independent video game developer and publisher. Activision rapidly grew to USD$159 million in revenue in 1983, its third year of sales. Miller acted as Vice President of Product Development and designed several of the company's first games. Among his games designed while with Activision are Checkers, Tennis, Ice Hockey, Starmaster and Robot Tank. Miller experimented with implementing a 3D display for the game Checkers but due to technical limitations of both the Atari 2600 and television sets of the era, the idea was dropped.
