A dodgy BORDER CROSSING and getting PULLED OVER by the POLICE in Estonia!
A dodgy BORDER CROSSING and getting PULLED OVER by the POLICE
We start the day by exploring the border town of Valga which has a colourful history - In 1918, both Estonia and Latvia declared their independence, two years later, the time came to finalise the border between the two states. The town of Valga which means walk, is an important railway junction town where there were roughly equal numbers of Estonians and Latvians, the border divide here caused some conflict.
It was decided that the border should follow the stream that meanders through the centre. Walk was renamed in the national languages of the two states, the Estonian side became Valga and the Latvian side became Valka.
Border posts appeared throughout the town to enforce the divide. Recent complex history has seen the bor...

Hike No. 12 (66 km, 5 days), from Kiidjärve to Ilumetsa, Estonia. DAYS 1-2.

Magical Estonian winter
Come with me as I go in search of some snow and winter from the mainland of Estonia! Living in Hiiumaa is a privilege but the snowless winter got me and made me leave the island to look for some winter scenery. I drove around Estonia to visit some new places I have never been to and it definitely did not disappoint me!

The Kihnu Cultural Space
UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2008
URL: https://ich.unesco.org/en/RL/kihnu-cultural-space-00042
Description: Lying off Estonias Baltic coast, the small islands of Kihnu and Manija are home to a community of 600 people whose cultural expressions and agricultural traditions have been kept alive over the centuries largely through the islands female population. The men of the Kihnu community have taken to sea to hunt seals and fish, while the women have remained on the islands to farm and to maintain the household. Kihnu women thus have become the principal custodians of the cultural traditions embodied in numerous songs, games, dances, wedding ceremonies and handicrafts. Singing is an integral part of collective handicraft activities and of reli...

BRITISH COUPLE TOURING ESTONIA heading back to the MAINLAND to EXPLORE PÄRNU in SUMMERTIME 2020!
Our final day on the Estonian island of Saaremaa! In this video we head back to the mainland of Estonia but make a few quick stops along the way before we take the ferry.
Arriving back onto the mainland took us on a trip down memory lane as we drive along the same road we did back in March 2020 on that crazy day crossing the Latvian/Estonian border hours before it closed due to the global pandemic. We had no idea back then that Estonia was about to become our new home for most of 2020!
This time instead of driving past Pärnu and onto Tallinn we finally head into Pärnu for a few days exploring this Estonian summer city!
Upcoming videos!
Join us next time as we explore Estonia’s summer city Pärnu, with it’s sandy beaches, restaurants, spas and laid back vibes! If you can’t wait that l...

Recent complex history has seen the borders removed and re stated a few times but since 2004 both countries joined the European Union, and three years later, the Schengen Zone. This meant that all border checks were removed. The cities now cooperate closely together, and both have the official slogan “one city, two countries.”
After exploring the fascinating town which borders two countries we head over to check out the Neo-Gothic Sangaste Castle. Sangaste Castle is worth a visit if you are interested in culture and history. We can not believe how frequently we look around ourselves in Estonia and realise we are totally alone, where we come from in the UK there is almost always at least one person within eyeshot so we’re always completely amazed by the peaceful countryside of Estonia.
We head over to take a quick look at the town of Otepää which is one of the 21 Southern Estonian places worth discovering that are marked with these big metal yellow National Geographic windows; A small town nestled in southern Estonian hills and valleys, Otepää is a well-known winter holiday destination for all those who love the snow. Skiing, skating & snowboarding can all be enjoyed at this relaxed winter resort, boasting luxurious spa hotels and restaurants.
During the summer you can hike along the paths of Otepää nature park, admire rolling hills and lakes, winding village roads and small rivers. The nearby Pühajärve is one of the largest lakes in Estonia and is perfectly suited for a quiet weekend camping trip in the wild.

Singing is an integral part of collective handicraft activities and of religious celebrations. Particularly noteworthy among the musical repertory of the islanders is an oral tradition of pre-Christian origin, known as runic or Kalevala-metre songs.
The most visible emblem of Kihnu culture remains the woolen handicrafts worn by the women of the community. Working in their homes using traditional looms and local wool, the women weave and knit mittens, stockings, skirts and blouses, which often feature bright colours, vivid stripes and intricate embroidery. Many of the symbolic forms and colours adorning these striking garments are rooted in ancient legends. The Kihnu cultural space is also distinguished by the interrelation of its rich cultural and natural heritage. On both islands, the characteristic landscape of grassland, pine groves and coastal sands has remained relatively intact up to the present day.
Their geographic isolation, their strong sense of community spirit and their steadfast attachment to the customs of their ancestors have enabled the Kihnu people to preserve their crafts and customs. Today, Kihnu culture is threatened by economic hardship, uncontrolled housing development and the intrusion of tourists insensitive to the islands traditions and natural environment.

If you can’t wait that long head over to our instagram www.instagram.com/tideknottravellers for daily updates on where we are now and what’s coming up in our future videos!

A British couple from just outside London, England. We got married in 2018 and decided instead of a honeymoon we’d travel the world together for a year. We saved money and travel points, quit our jobs, rented our house out and boarded a one way flight. We started this Youtube channel to share our experiences with friends, family and anyone who plans to travel to the places we’re visiting. We leave TKT tips/facts on our vlogs and blogs to give information that we wish we’d had before visiting. We hope you find our content useful :)

Are you considering moving to Estonia? In this post we will discuss the options to get a residence permit in the country as both EU and non- EU citizens, for the purpose of work, business, study. We will also list the advantages and disadvantages about living in Estonia.
00:48 Estonia Overview
Estonia is a country in Northeastern Europe, and part of the Baltic States together with Latvia and Lithuania. The country is a full European Union member, a member of the Schengen area, and currently uses the Euro common currency. The economy of Estonia is pretty stable, and the country has experience huge economic growth since it got independent after the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990's.
Below, we will analyze the options if you want to move to Estonia, temporarily or permanently.
01:17 Estonia Residence Permit for EU Citizens
If you are an EU citizen and you want to live in Estonia for more than 3 months, you need to register your stay. The process is pretty straightforward and you can do everything after you are already in Estonia. You will need to either own real estate, have a rental contract, or the consent of a property owner in Estonia to live and register your address there.
Once registered, you can go on and start your activities, whatever they might be: work, study, retirement, non-economic activities broadly with the same rights as Estonian citizens.
01:58 Estonia Residence Permit for Non EU Citizens
If you are not an EU citizen your options to live in Estonia are considerably reduced. However, there is still a number of options you can explore if you want to live in Estonia and you are not an EU citizen.
One of the good things about Estonia is that if you are legally in the country on a visa, or if you center Estonia visa free, you can apply for your residence permit directly in the Estonian Police while already in the country. In many cases however, it will be more convenient to apply from abroad at an Estonian embassy due to the time and document constraints.
02:41 Residence Permit for Business
In my opinion, the most attractive residence permit currently available in Estonia is the one for business owners and self-employed persons. The financial requirements are reasonable.
If you are an shareholder of a company the capital invested must be of 65000 thousands euros. However, if you are self-employed, the capital investment requirement is just of 16000 euros, which I consider pretty reasonable.
03:19 Digital Nomad Visa
Estonia, as a pioneer in many aspects of its government, has recently launched a digital nomad visa. This visa is ideal if you want to live in Estonia and work remotely for your own company, or providing services for companies abroad.
The main requirement when it comes to the digital nomad visa is showing evidence that you already have a steady income as a remote worker. The minimum income threshold you need to be eligible for this type of stay in Estonia is EUR 3504 per month during the 6 months previous to your application. The downside of this type of visa is that is issued for up to one year. You can apply through an Estonian embassy abroad or directly in Estonia if you are legally in the country.

05:51 Residence Permits for Retirement
06:11 Permanent Residence Permit in Estonia

07:21 Advantages of Living in Estonia
Now, let's check some of the main advantages of living in Estonia:
Efficient Government
Good Location in The Schengen Area
Prevalence of English Speakers
08:51 Disadvantages of Estonia
Now let's do a quick analysis of the disadvantages of Estonia:
Weather
Estonian Language Difficulty
Lack of Flexible Residence Permits
