Al Jazeera (Arabic:الجزيرةal-ǧazīrah IPA:[æl dʒæˈziːrɐ], literally "The Peninsula", referring to the Arabian Peninsula), also known as JSC (Jazeera Satellite Channel), is a Doha-based state-funded broadcaster owned by the Al Jazeera Media Network, which is partly funded by the House of Thani, the ruling family of Qatar. Initially launched as an Arabic news and current affairs satellite TV channel, Al Jazeera has since expanded into a network with several outlets, including the Internet and specialtyTV channels in multiple languages.
Al Jazeera is among the largest news organizations with 80 bureaus around the world. Al Jazeera is owned by the government of Qatar. While Al Jazeera officials have stated that they are editorially independent from the government of Qatar, this assertion has been disputed.
The original Al Jazeera channel's willingness to broadcast dissenting views, for example on call-in shows, created controversies in the Arab States of the Persian Gulf. The station gained worldwide attention following the outbreak of war in Afghanistan, when it was the only channel to cover the war live, from its office there.

There have been calls for the immediate release of a hospital director who has been detained by the Israeli military in Gaza. Dr Hussam Abu Safia was arrested during a raid of Kamal Adwan Hospital in the north of the strip. His whereabouts are unknown. Israel detained hundreds of people including medics and patients and says 240 are still in custody. Hundreds more have since been released.
Some have been describing the violence and abuse they suffered at the hands of the Israeli army.
Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum reports from Deir el-Balah in central Gaza, Palestine.
Dr Ali Elaydi is an orthopaedic surgeon, originally from Gaza. He worked in the strip as a medical volunteer in April. He says the arrest of Dr Hussam Abu Safia is likely to instill fear in other doctors who want to publicly advocate for the well-being of their patients.

Israeli forces have carried out attacks on two hospitals in northern Gaza, escalating their attacks on the Strip's healthcare system.
An Israeli strike on the upper floor of al-Wafaa Hospital in Gaza City killed at least seven people and critically wounded others, according to Gaza’s civil defence on Sunday.
A witness at the scene of the bombing described seeing bodies "ripped to pieces."
The Israeli military claimed the attack targeted a Hamas "command and control centre," but provided no evidence to support this assertion.
Al Jazeera’s Moath al-Kahlout reports from the attack scene at al-Wafaa Hospital.

At least 85 people have been killed in a plane crash at Muan International airport in South Korea. Emergency authorities say the Boeing 737 caught fire, after veering off the runway and hitting a fence. The Jeju Air flight was returning from Bangkok carrying 175 passengers and six crew. The fire agency says two people have been pulled alive from the wreckage.
Al Jazeera’s Rob McBride has more from Seoul, South Korea.
Todd Curtis is the CEO of AirSafe.com, an aviation safety consultancy firm. He's also a former airline safety engineer for Boeing, the manufacturer of the aircraft that crashed.
He says it will take time to establish the exact cause of the crash.

At least 179 people have been killed after a passenger plane skidded and crashed while trying to land at Muan International Airport in South Korea in one of the country’s worst aviation disasters.
The accident occurred on Sunday at 9:03am local time (00:03 GMT) as the Jeju Air flight, carrying 175 passengers and six crew from the Thai capital Bangkok, landed at Muan International Airport about 290km (180 miles) southwest of the capital Seoul.
The National Fire Agency confirmed that 179 people – 85 women, 84 men and 10 others whose genders weren’t immediately identifiable – have been killed, and two people have been rescued – both crew members. The agency said the fire that engulfed the plane had been extinguished.
both black boxes that contain flight data and voice recordings from the cockpit have been recovered at the scene and will be examined by government experts, the transport ministry said.
Emergency crews are facing the difficult task of identifying victims, many of whom died in the ferocious
fire after the crash. It’s known, that most will be from this southwest corner of the Korean Peninsula
and would have been returning home from Christmas vacation.
