Alvin Neill Jackson (born December 26, 1935), affectionately referred to as "Little" Al Jackson, is a former left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball who played from 1959 to 1969. His 43 wins with the New York Mets were the franchise record until Tom Seaver eased past the mark in 1969.
Listed at 5feet 10inches (1.78m), 169 pounds (77kg), Jackson was born in Waco, Texas, and attended Wiley College. He was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates as an amateur free agent in 1955 but his first regular major league experience came as a member of the inaugural 1962 New York Mets. As a starting pitcher, he posted an 8–20 record that year. The 40–120 record of those 1962 Mets continues to be the most losses by a Major League team in a single season since the 19th Century. On the 14th of August 1962, Jackson pitched a complete game 3-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies in 4 hours 35 minutes - the longest complete game in terms of playing time in Major League history.
After three more seasons of sixteen or more losses with the Mets, including a second 8–20 campaign, Jackson was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals for Ken Boyer. In 1966, his first year in St. Louis, Jackson had his best season in the majors. He was sixth in the National League in earned run average and ninth in complete games. Unfortunately for Jackson, he also lost fifteen games and, the next year, was used more as a relief pitcher. Those 15 losses gave him a five-year streak of at least 15 losses—the record since 1900 is six. Despite going 9–4 in 1967, he did not see action in the 1967 World Series.
Alwin Jackson (born October 5, 1964) is an American artist and painter currently based in Palm Springs, California. Versed in multiple disciplines of art and design, Jackson has studied and undergone training in Los Angeles, Bangkok, Boston, and Atlanta. His works are collected through out the U.S. and internationally.
Early life
Jackson was born in Carmel, California and grew up in Pebble Beach. A standout in the fine art program at Stevenson Prep Highschool, Jackson was sent to study painting further at universities prior to high school graduation. He entered the fine art program at Pepperdine University and graduated in 1986, accepting his first job at advertising agency Ogilvy and Mather the same year. Relocating overseas for the position, Jackson was based in Asia where he created ads for Guinness, Pepsi, and other brands. In 1998 he returned to the U.S., designing ads for BBDO Advertising in New York and Atlanta.
Art career
Despite the tenure and success in advertising Jackson stated in interviews to having always been a painter and in 2008, thus affording his departure from advertising design, began to formally sell works. Reviews and media relating to Jackson's work has mentioned influences of Edward Hopper's contrast of light and dark. While, reluctant to emulate other painters, Jackson has admittedly discussed and embraced the comparison to Hopper's play of light and shadow. Contemporary works painted by Jackson have an added modern element based on the composition, thus being the liberal use of negative space along with a style that emulates simplicity and a graphic design quality. When discussing this in interviews and press coverage, Jackson credits such to an advertising designer and mentor, Neil French, whom the artist worked under for five years in advertising.
Jackson's father, Al Jackson Sr., led a jazz/swing dance band in Memphis, Tennessee. The young Jackson started drumming at an early age and began playing on stage with his father's band in 1940, at the age of five. He later played in producer and trumpeter Willie Mitchell's band and at the same time was holding down a chair in the popular Ben Branch Band.
In an interview with Drum! magazine, Mitchell recalled,
But that was around 7:00 o'clock. And by the time Al Senior came in an hour later, at 8:00 o'clock, Al Jackson Jr. was swinging that damn band like a pro."
Future bandmates Steve Cropper and Donald "Duck" Dunn first heard Jackson playing in Mitchell's band at the Flamingo Room, and the all-white Manhattan Club. Mitchell had also hired Booker T. Jones for his band. It was Jones who suggested Jackson be brought to Stax. He said, "You guys need to know about Al." Dunn said that Jackson almost caused his wife to divorce him, because after finishing his own gig at one o'clock, he would stop by a club to hear Jackson and would get home at four or five in the morning; "He was that good!" said Dunn. It took only one session with Jackson to convince Dunn and Cropper that they had to have him. Jackson was reluctant at first. He felt he could make more money playing live than doing session work. He wanted a guaranteed regular salary to come over to Stax (although he continued to play on sessions produced by Mitchell for Hi Records). And so he became the first Stax session musician to be on a weekly salary.
