The Akosombo Dam, also known as the Akosombo Hydroelectric Project, is a hydroelectric dam on the Volta River in southeastern Ghana in the Akosombo gorge and part of the Volta River Authority. The construction of the dam flooded part of the Volta River Basin, and led to the subsequent creation of Lake Volta. Lake Volta is the largest man-made lake in the world by surface area. It covers 8,502 square kilometres (3,283sqmi), which is 3.6% of Ghana's land area. With a volume of 148 cubic kilometers Lake Volta is the world's third largest man-made lake by volume, the largest being Lake Kariba which is located between Zimbabwe and Zambia in Southern Africa and contains 185 cubic kilometers of water.
The primary purpose of the Akosombo Dam was to provide electricity for the aluminium industry. The Akosombo Dam was called "the largest single investment in the economic development plans of Ghana." Its original electrical output was 912 megawatts (1,223,000hp), which was upgraded to 1,020 megawatts (1,370,000hp) in a retrofit project that was completed in 2006.
Akosombo Dam Of The Volta Region In Ghana - Africa
Before we left the Volta Region of Ghana, we wanted to see one last thing, the famous Akosombo Dam. A huge mega project which transformed the enter Eastern Region of Ghana. It's highly controversial, so we were kind of surprised that the dam company was actually giving tours.
All the conflict aside, it was a very interesting tour and we loved that we were able to get up close, walking on top of the dam wall. It was amazing to see on the one side the huge dam lake (which is visible from space) and on the other side the dam wall and the turbine, releasing water down to the valley.
We actually had planned to take an overnight ferry on the dam lake going up north, this is probably one of the most adventurous things you can do while visiting Ghana. But we ran out of time, not even 91 Days ar...

Bui Dam in Ghana
The Bui Dam is a 400-megawatt (540,000 hp) hydroelectric project in Ghana. It is built on the Black Volta river at the Bui Gorge, at the southern end of Bui National Park. The project is a collaboration between the government of Ghana and Sino Hydro, a Chinese construction company. Construction on the main dam began in December 2009. Its first generator was commissioned on 3 May 2013,and the dam was inaugurated in December of the same year.
Bui will be the second largest hydroelectric generating plant in the country after the Akosombo Dam. The reservoir flooded about 20% of the Bui National Park and impacts the habitats for the rare black hippopotamus as well as a large number of wildlife species. It required the resettlement of 1,216 people,[6] and affected many more.

The construction of the dam and the creation of Lake Volta, the largest artificial lake in the world, had significant environmental and social impacts. The flooding of the Volta River valley led to the displacement of thousands of people and the loss of farmland, forests, and cultural heritage. The lake also created new opportunities for fishing, transportation, and irrigation, but has also faced challenges such as pollution, overfishing, and the use of child labor in the fishing industry.
Despite these challenges, the Akosombo Dam remains a key contributor to Ghana's energy sector and its economic growth. The Volta River Authority is currently exploring options to expand the dam's capacity and to develop additional hydropower projects on the Volta River.
