Aisne (river)
The Aisne (French: [ɛn]) is a river in northeastern France, left tributary of the river Oise. It gave its name to the French département Aisne. It was known in the Roman period as Axona.
It rises in the forest of Argonne, at Rembercourt-Sommaisne, near Sainte-Menehould. It flows north and then west before joining the Oise River near Compiègne. The Aisne is about 290 kilometres (180 mi) long. Three bitter battles of World War I were fought into the valleys of the Aisne.

Small boats can travel much of the length of the river. Canals join the Aisne to the Seine and Meuse rivers. In the small-capacity network of waterways, the Aisne and the Canal latéral à l'Aisne (Aisne lateral canal) give access to the agricultural towns of Soissons and Vailly-sur-Aisne, both large exporters of cereals. The waterway also links Northwestern Europe to the small inland harbour of Reims, where metallurgical industries are depending on inland waterways transport. Third Battle of the Aisne
The Third Battle of the Aisne (French: 3e Bataille de L'Aisne) was a battle of the German Spring Offensive during World War I that focused on capturing the Chemin des Dames Ridge before the American Expeditionary Forces arrived completely in France. It was one of a series of offensives, known as the Kaiserschlacht, launched by the Germans in the spring and summer of 1918.
Background
The massive surprise attack (named Blücher-Yorck after two Prussian generals of the Napoleonic Wars) lasted from 27 May until 4 June 1918 and was the first full-scale German offensive following the Lys Offensive in Flanders in April.
The Germans held the Chemin des Dames Ridge from the First Battle of the Aisne in September 1914 to 1917, when General Mangin captured it during the Second Battle of the Aisne (in the Nivelle Offensive).
Operation Blücher-Yorck was planned primarily by Erich Ludendorff, who was certain that success at the Aisne would lead the German armies to within striking distance of Paris. Ludendorff, who saw the British Expeditionary Force as the main threat, believed that this, in turn, would cause the Allies to move forces from Flanders to help defend the French capital, allowing the Germans to continue their Flanders offensive with greater ease. Thus, the Aisne drive was to be essentially a large diversionary attack.

The First Battle of the Aisne (French: 1re Bataille de l'Aisne) was the Allied follow-up offensive against the right wing of the German First Army (led by Alexander von Kluck) and the Second Army (led by Karl von Bülow) as they retreated after the First Battle of the Marne earlier in September 1914. The Advance to the Aisne (6 September – 1 October) consisted of the Battle of the Marne (7–10 September) and the Battle of the Aisne (12–15 September).

When the Germans turned to face the pursuing Allies on 13 September, they held one of the most formidable positions on the Western Front. Between Compiègne and Berry-au-Bac, the Aisne River winds westward and is about 100 feet (30 m) wide, ranging from 12–15 feet (3.7–4.6 m) deep. Low-lying ground extends a 1-mile (1.6 km) on each side, rising abruptly to a line of steep cliffs 300–400 feet (91–122 m) high, then gently levelling to a plateau. The Germans settled on the higher northern side 2 miles (3.2 km) beyond the crest, behind a dense thicket that covered the front and slope. Low crops in the unfenced countryside offered no natural concealment to the Allies. Deep, narrow paths cut into the escarpment at right angles, exposing any infiltrators to extreme hazard. The forces on the northern plateau commanded a wide field of fire.

The Gallo-Romans faced raids and migration from the Germanic Franks, who dominated the region for hundreds of years, eventually creating the medieval Kingdom of France. France emerged as a major European power in the Late Middle Ages, with its victory in the Hundred Years' War (1337 to 1453) strengthening French state-building and paving the way for a future centralized absolute monarchy. During the Renaissance, France experienced a vast cultural development and established the beginning of a global colonial empire. The 16th century was dominated by religious civil wars between Catholics and Protestants (Huguenots).

In this week in military history, we explore the First Battle of the Marne in 1914, where French and the British Expeditionary Forces fought to prevent the German advance on Paris in WWI. The first Battle of the Marne took place 30 miles from Paris between September 6th – 12th. It was an opportunity for the BEF and French to stop the German advancement, that had already marched through Belgium and parts of France in their advance towards Paris. Using French air reconnaissance and radio intercepts, the very first time these had been used in a major conflict, French Commander in Chief, General Joseph Joffre, ordered Michel-Joseph Maunoury’s French Sixth Army to attack. The third Battle of the Aisne was apart of the German spring offensive of 1918. During this offensive, the Germans tried to achieve a final victory over France in early 1918, before the American troops could reach France. During the Battle of the Aisne, German units crossed the Aisne River between Soissons and Reims. The German 7th and 1st armies advanced with 29 divisions, 4,630 guns and 500 planes on a 55km wide front. They reached the Marne and came within 56km of Paris, the closest they ever been since 1914. But the German Army ran out of reserves to continue the fight, and thus had to stop in early June 1918. The third Battle of the Aisne also marked one of the first time American troops were engaged in fighting, 2 American divisions took pater in the later stages of the battle. ...

In this week in military history, we explore the First Battle of the Marne in 1914, where French and the British Expeditionary Forces fought to prevent the German advance on Paris in WWI.
The first Battle of the Marne took place 30 miles from Paris between September 6th – 12th. It was an opportunity for the BEF and French to stop the German advancement, that had already marched through Belgium and parts of France in their advance towards Paris.
Using French air reconnaissance and radio intercepts, the very first time these had been used in a major conflict, French Commander in Chief, General Joseph Joffre, ordered Michel-Joseph Maunoury’s French Sixth Army to attack.
Using requisitioned Paris taxis and buses—the first extensive use of motorized transport in wartime and forever celebrated as the “taxis of the Marne” – Maunoury and his reinforcements rushed to the front.
Soon, six French Armies and the BEF met an overextended Imperial German Army. Famously the men of the BEF employed their bolt action Lee enfield with such speed and accuracy that the advancing Germans believed they were being met with machine guns.
By September 9th, they had seemingly encircled and destroyed the German First and Second Armies. General von Moltke faltered and a general retreat to the Aisne River was ordered.
The Germans dug in, resulting in trench warfare and an eventual stalemate that would last for four years. The German retreat ended their hopes of a quick victory and foiled the German Schlieffen Plan. The war now would certainly not be over by Christmas.

The third Battle of the Aisne was apart of the German spring offensive of 1918. During this offensive, the Germans tried to achieve a final victory over France in early 1918, before the American troops could reach France.
During the Battle of the Aisne, German units crossed the Aisne River between Soissons and Reims.
The German 7th and 1st armies advanced with 29 divisions, 4,630 guns and 500 planes on a 55km wide front.
They reached the Marne and came within 56km of Paris, the closest they ever been since 1914. But the German Army ran out of reserves to continue the fight, and thus had to stop in early June 1918. The third Battle of the Aisne also marked one of the first time American troops were engaged in fighting, 2 American divisions took pater in the later stages of the battle.
This is a short propaganda movie from late June, called “The Battle between Aisne and Marne”, showing various scenes of the advancing German troops, including a scene of Crown Prince Wilhelm visiting a command post, captured British Mark IV tanks in German service, German A7V tanks, captured artillery, destroyed French villages, and captured French airfields and planes.

The Northern region of France , it is most important geographical features are its rivers, most of which feed into the Seine. In historical times, this system of waterways was crucial to the emergence of Paris and indeed to the modern nation-state of France. In addition to the great sights of the City of Light, Northern France was the key battleground in the First World War and is home to some of the country's most important modern historical sites.
The Marne River is one of the main waterways of north-central France. It rises on the Langres Plateau and flows in a generally westward direction to a confluence with the Seine River southeast of Paris, running a course of about 515 km (310 mi.). It's one of a series of rivers which historically served to protect the French capital city from invasion, most famously so during the Battle of Marne in September, 1914. In this drone video by power falcon, you'll get a bird's eye view of a meander in the river in the Champagne region.
The Aisne is one of the great rivers of Northern France. It rises in the Argonne Forest and converges with the Oise, which in turn flows into the Seine. It's part of a greater river system in the region which served to both feed and protect Paris from foreign invasion, permitting the city on the Seine to emerge as the nerve center of the modern nation-state of France. In this drone video by power falcon, you'll get an aerial view of an upstream section of the Aisne around the town of Vailly-sur-Aisne in the Aisne Department.

Meanwhile, the Austro-Hungarian army is retreating to the Carpathian Mountains after a catastrophic defeat against Russia with hundreds of thousands of casualties.

In this week in military history, we explore the First Battle of the Marne in 1914, where French and the British Expeditionary Forces fought to prevent the German advance on Paris in WWI.
The first Battle of the Marne took place 30 miles from Paris between September 6th – 12th. It was an opportunity for the BEF and French to stop the German advancement, that had already marched through Belgium and parts of France in their advance towards Paris.
Using French air reconnaissance and radio intercepts, the very first time these had been used in a major conflict, French Commander in Chief, General Joseph Joffre, ordered Michel-Joseph Maunoury’s French Sixth Army to attack.
Using requisitioned Paris taxis and buses—the first extensive use of motorized transport in wartime and forever celebrated as the “taxis of the Marne” – Maunoury and his reinforcements rushed to the front.
Soon, six French Armies and the BEF met an overextended Imperial German Army. Famously the men of the BEF employed their bolt action Lee enfield with such speed and accuracy that the advancing Germans believed they were being met with machine guns.
By September 9th, they had seemingly encircled and destroyed the German First and Second Armies. General von Moltke faltered and a general retreat to the Aisne River was ordered.
The Germans dug in, resulting in trench warfare and an eventual stalemate that would last for four years. The German retreat ended their hopes of a quick victory and foiled the German Schlieffen Plan. The war now would certainly not be over by Christmas.

The German 7th and 1st armies advanced with 29 divisions, 4,630 guns and 500 planes on a 55km wide front.
They reached the Marne and came within 56km of Paris, the closest they ever been since 1914. But the German Army ran out of reserves to continue the fight, and thus had to stop in early June 1918. The third Battle of the Aisne also marked one of the first time American troops were engaged in fighting, 2 American divisions took pater in the later stages of the battle.
This is a short propaganda movie from late June, called “The Battle between Aisne and Marne”, showing various scenes of the advancing German troops, including a scene of Crown Prince Wilhelm visiting a command post, captured British Mark IV tanks in German service, German A7V tanks, captured artillery, destroyed French villages, and captured French airfields and planes.

Aisne (river)
The Aisne (French: [ɛn]) is a river in northeastern France, left tributary of the river Oise. It gave its name to the French département Aisne. It was known in the Roman period as Axona.
It rises in the forest of Argonne, at Rembercourt-Sommaisne, near Sainte-Menehould. It flows north and then west before joining the Oise River near Compiègne. The Aisne is about 290 kilometres (180 mi) long. Three bitter battles of World War I were fought into the valleys of the Aisne.

Small boats can travel much of the length of the river. Canals join the Aisne to the Seine and Meuse rivers. In the small-capacity network of waterways, the Aisne and the Canal latéral à l'Aisne (Aisne lateral canal) give access to the agricultural towns of Soissons and Vailly-sur-Aisne, both large exporters of cereals. The waterway also links Northwestern Europe to the small inland harbour of Reims, where metallurgical industries are depending on inland waterways transport.
