Jean Sibelius at Home 1927/1945 with Aino, Heidi and Margareta (Historic Footage)
This historic clip shows Jean Sibelius at his home, Ainola. The first moving images of Jean Sibelius dates from the spring of 1927, when he was filmed at Ainola by the Finnish cinematographers Heikki Aho and Björn Soldan. Aho and Soldan were the sons of the noveliest Juhani Aho, and had grown up in the close vicinity of Sibelius and his family.
In the 1927 film, we see an urbane and relaxed Sibelius on the Lake Tuusula road. The images are striking: in his bowler hat, the composer has a casual, Anglo-Saxon air which differs from later portrayals of the Karsh-ian Sibelius as the brooding and forbidding musical titan.
The documentary also provides intimate glimpses of family life at Ainola: we see a happy Aino in the role of home-maker and her daughters picking apples in the garden (one r...

Their father reads the newspaper and contentedly puffs on his cigar.
In one scene, Soldan's camera catches the composer at work at the piano; another shows his daughter Margareta playing a violin solo, caught against the light filtering through a window.
In 1945, shortly before his 80th birthday, Sibelius agreed to be filmed again by a Finnish film team. This time, Aho and Soldan show us a very different Sibelius, the aged composer watching the forests, cranes and lakes, full of autumnal nostalgia.

The movie tells the unique story of the composer Jean Sibelius.
It is a life story, a love story and a story about the music that changed history.
The movie follows the young Sibelius and his colourful study years in Helsinki, Berlin and Vienna.
Sibelius falls in love with young Aino Järnefelt. This strong and brave woman stays beside him till the end, despite his way of life.
To ease the pain after the loss of the youngest daughter, Sibelius takes his family to Rapallo in Italy, where he finds the inspiration to his second symphony.
Finland lives under the pressure of Russia. The Russians forbid any kind of performance of "Finlandia" by Sibelius. Therefore he performs it under assumed names in concerts.
When time of the revolution finally comes in Russia, Finland gains her independence.
The song called "The Jaeger March", that Sibelius has written for the Finnish soldiers a little earlier, is too much for the communists, who put Sibelius on the blacklist.
The aged Sibelius fights with his eight symphonie. He withdraws from the world and finally he throws his last symphony into fire.
The world is waiting for the new masterpiece in vain.

Jean Sibelius, Lemminkäinen Suite, Op. 22: IV Lemminkäinen's Return
Jean Sibelius was extremely precise with his own compositions and eager to hear their latest renditions. However, he avoided performing in public and stayed home regardless of requests. In the 1930s, after Sibelius had stopped composing almost entirely, he began spending more time in the Ainola library, seated in his armchair, smoking a cigar and listening to his beloved Telefunken 7001 WK radio.
Aino Sibelius described her husband’s pastime in a letter:
'At this very moment, his first symphony is being performed in Switzerland. Audibility is not too good, but the familiarity of the composition allows him to block out disruptive noises and focus on the music. Right now it is playing beautifully. You can imagine the enjoyment. Being able to sit here at home in the middle of the woods listening to his favourite music.'
The radio and the gramophone were Ainola’s centre. Every time there was a radio concert or Sibelius listened to his records, Ainola’s silence transformed into a pummelling force of music – the tones emptied the room of all elements that could disrupt the listening. Once Sibelius was so immersed in his maximum-volume enjoyment that he missed his guests subtly retreating to the yard, holding their ears. One bold guest, conductor Sir Thomas Beecham, finally had the courage to awaken Sibelius from his cloud of smoke and sound and get him to return to earth from his personal space of music. ‘I want to hear every semiquaver of the composition,’ was Sibelius’s explanation for his gramophone’s maximum volume. He would usually resume his listening session after saying this.

… that the ten-member Radio Orchestra’s first performance was on 1 September 1927, from 8 to 9:45 P.M? All that is known of the evening’s programme is that the orchestra performed Finnish music with violinist Hugo Huttunen as the soloist.
… that the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra began experimenting with radio broadcasts in 1926 and made them a regular activity in 1927?
… that in 1934, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra played a concert, led by the American conductor Werner Janssen, which was broadcast live via radio in North America? Sibelius’s third and fourth symphonies were performed together with the symphonic poem, Pohjola's Daughter.

JEAN SIBELIUS JA AINOLA
( Martin Segerstråle piano )
1800 –luvun lopulla Sibelius alkoi tuntea tarvetta ottaa etäisyyttä pääkaupungin riehakkaaseen taiteilijaelämään. ”Helsingissä laulu kuoli sisälläni” hän on myöhemmin todennut. Asuttuaan joitakin vuosia Keravalla Sibeliukset ostivat vuonna 1903 Järvenpäästä vajaan hehtaarin kokoisen tontin, joka sijaitsi puolisen kilometriä Tuusulanjärveltä itään. Seudulle oli jo 1800-luvun loppuvuosina syntynyt merkittävien nuorten suomalaistaiteilijoiden kiinteä yhteisö. Siihen kuuluivat mm. kirjailija Juhani Aho, hänen taiteilijapuolisonsa Venny Soldan-Brofeldt, kirjailija J. H. Erkko sekä taiteilijat Eero Järnefelt ja Pekka Halonen.
Ainola valmistui vuonna 1904 ja muutto sinne muodostui Sibeliuksen sävellystyön kannalta ratkaisevaksi. Valtaosa hänen sävellystuotannostaan onkin syntynyt Ainolassa. Kun Aino-puolison erityisen huolenpidon kohde oli Ainolan pihapiirin lännenpuoleinen puutarha, haki Sibelius puolestaan innoitusta idänpuolisten metsien hiljaisuudesta.
Sibeliuksen flyygeli

Sibeliuksen flyygeli
