"Nothing but a Number" is the third and final single from Pretty Ricky's debut album Bluestars. There was no official music video made for the single and the song did not appear on the Billboard Hot 100, however it did peak at #70 on the US R&B chart based solely on radio play.
Age Ain't Nothing But a Number received generally favorable reviews from critics. Many noted Aaliyah's vocal ability and praised the lyrical content. Aaliyah was credited for redefining R&B by blending her voice with Kelly's new jack swing. The album peaked at number 18 on the Billboard 200 and sold over three million copies in the United States. The album was certified Gold in Canada by the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) and Gold in the United Kingdom by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) to date. The album has sold over six million copies worldwide.
"Age Ain't Nothing but a Number" is a song by American singer Aaliyah, written and produced by R. Kelly for her debut album of the same name (1994). Its lyrics tell the story of a girl wanting to date an older man, saying that their age difference is irrelevant if the feelings are strong enough. The song begins with a short piano introduction in quintuple meter and Aaliyah looking up a page in her diary dated May 5th, 1993. Once she discovers it, the beat switches to the chorus. The line "I got a thing for you and I can't let go" is lifted directly from Bobby Caldwell's "What You Won't Do For Love".
It was released as the third single (and final single in the United States) from the album and became her first single in the U.S. to miss the top spot, peaking at number 75 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and number 32 on the UK Singles Chart.
Music video
The music video was directed by Millicent Shelton and filmed in Detroit, Michigan in November 1994 and released in early 1995. Mainly shot in black-and-white, it features cameo appearances by rappers Proof and Bizarre from D12 and Aaliyah's brother, Rashad Haughton.
Ain (French pronunciation:[ɛ̃]; Arpitan: En) is a department named after the Ain River on the eastern edge of France. The ʿayin glyph in these various languages represents, or has represented, a voiced pharyngeal fricative (/ʕ/), or a similarly articulated consonant, which has no equivalent or approximate substitute in the sound‐system of English. There are many possible transliterations.
Origins
The letter name is derived from Proto-Semitic*ʿayn- "eye", and the Phoenician letter had an eye-shape, ultimately derived from the ı͗rhieroglyph
To this day, ʿayin in Hebrew, Arabic, Amharic, and Maltese means "eye" and "spring" (ʿayno in Neo-Aramaic).
The Phoenician letter gave rise to the GreekΟ, Latin O, and CyrillicО, all representing vowels.
The sound represented by ayin is common to much of the Afrasiatic language family, such as the Egyptian, Cushitic, and Semitic languages. Some scholars believe that the sound in Proto-Indo-European transcribed h3 was similar, though this is debatable. (See Laryngeal theory.)
An ain is a spring in North Africa, which reaches the surface as a result of an artesian basin and is of particular importance in arid regions. It can produce a flow of water directly or result in evaporitic saline crusts. Known examples are found in the oases of the Tunisian region of Bled el Djerid and in the entire area around the depressions of Chott el Djerid and Chott el Gharsa. Here, there are water-bearing strata, usually of sand or sandstone, that act as aquifers in their function.
