The Aftermath of World War II: Collaboration & Retribution
In this video, I look at the aftermath of World War II. The period following the war was defined be questions of retribution for those who collaborated with the Nazis. Occupied countries asked themselves difficult questions. Was resistance a moral duty? Could collaboration be forgiven? How does Europe deal with countries like Austria were nazism was widespread?

Germany after the Second World War | The Abyss Ep. 10 | Full Documentary
It's the end of WW2 in Europe. But how to get on with victims and perpetrators?
On April 16, 1945, a few days after the liberation of the concentration camp "Buchenwald" by US soldiers, people from nearby Weimar visited the concentration camp after WW2. The German population has to take responsibility, after WW2. It's one of the biggest crimes ever committed: A mass murder of six million Jews. But it's like a national hymn: everybody says that they didn't know about it.
1945 is the year of Germany's total defeat in WW2. Not only the fact that the Germans lost WWII, but also the moral defeat is perhaps the greatest defeat. In the spring of 1945, after WW2, the Allies face a difficult task. What should be done with the Germans?
In WW2, 65 million have died. Who should be punished now?

The Aftermath of World War II in Europe | What Happened After WW2? | Short Documentary
Once the war was over, the Allies carried out the process of denazification – a term used to describe the removal of Nazi ideology from public life in Germany and Austria.
The Allies arrested many high-ranking Nazis. In 1945 and 1946, some of the most important political and military leaders of Nazi Germany were tried during The Nuremberg Trials. Their charges ranged from war crimes to conspiracy. These trials emphasized crimes carried out during the Holocaust, when close to six million Jewish victims and five million prisoners of war were murdered by the Nazis.
The Allies worked to establish peace treaties at the end of World War Two. The countries that fought alongside Germany lost territory and were forced to pay reparations.
The Allied powers agreed that Germany would be split int...

World War II, the greatest armed conflict in human history, encompassed global fighting in unprecedented ways. This course analyzes Allied and Axis investments and strategies that led one side to win and the other to lose. It also considers how the war’s diverse theaters, belligerents, and ways of fighting came eventually to define a single war.

At the beginning of July, the American camera teams are also allowed to film in Berlin. They manage to get unique colour shots of the destroyed capital and its inhabitants. While George Stevens does not get permission to film the Potsdam Conference, Major Lawton is at least allowed to be present at the first meeting of the new US President Harry Truman with Kremlin ruler Josef Stalin.
When US troops conquer Nazi Germany from the west in March 1945, camera teams follow them, documenting the defeated and occupied country. The special feature: they shoot in 16mm colour. The result is unique film footage of the destroyed cities an...

In 1945, the U.S. was determined to take back Manila, but they didn't use air strikes for fear of causing civilian casualties. This meant one thing: a tense series of street-level battles to drive out the Japanese.

The Aftermath of World War II in the Netherlands
The last days of WW2 in the Netherlands were violent and confusing. Then what? How was the aftermath of WWII in the Netherlands? This video I will talk about the shooting on Dam Square, the Georgian Uprising on Texel by the Georgian Legion (Russenoorlog), the punishing of collaborators (for example members of the NSB party and the Dutch volunteers for the Eastern Front) which was done by members of the Domestic Forces (Binnenlandse Strijdkrachten). Then there were plans of Dutch annexations of German lands and Operation Black Tulip was planned. For Holland WWII had delived the country a lot of material damage. Cities were bombed, factories and railways destroyed and many houses were lost. After the Second World War in the Netherlands was over it was time to rebuild te country.

Impact of World War II on the U.S. Economy and Workforce | World War II Stories
America’s involvement in World War II had a significant impact on the economy and workforce of the United States. The United States was still recovering from the impact of the Great Depression and the unemployment rate was hovering around 25%. Our involvement in the war soon changed that rate. American factories were retooled to produce goods to support the war effort and almost overnight the unemployment rate dropped to around 10%. Women went to work to fill jobs that were traditionally held by men. This segment of Iowa Public Television's Iowa’s WWII Stories includes historical footage and profiles how a civilian from Ankeny, Iowa supported the war effort.

The Allied powers agreed that Germany would be split into occupational zones. These zones were controlled by Great Britain, the United States, France and the Soviet Union. The Allies also occupied Austria from 1945 to 1955.
In 1949, Germany was divided into two separate countries: East Germany (which was ruled by the Soviet communist government) and West Germany (which was ruled by the Western Allies’ democratic system of government). Germany’s capital, Berlin, was also split into East and West.
The Soviets began taking over countries in eastern Europe and setting up Communist governments. The separation of Europe marked the start of the Cold War between the democratic countries of the west and the Communist nations of eastern Europe. The Iron Curtain defined the border between the two.

Hillsdale College is an independent institution of higher learning founded in 1844 by men and women “grateful to God for the inestimable blessings” resulting from civil and religious liberty and “believing that the diffusion of learning is essential to the perpetuity of these blessings.” It pursues the stated object of the founders: “to furnish all persons who wish, irrespective of nation, color, or sex, a literary, scientific, [and] theological education” outstanding among American colleges “and to combine with this such moral and social instruction as will best develop the minds and improve the hearts of its pupils.” As a nonsectarian Christian institution, Hillsdale College maintains “by precept and example” the immemorial teachings and practices of the Christian faith.
The College also considers itself a trustee of our Western philosophical and theological inheritance tracing to Athens and Jerusalem, a heritage finding its clearest expression in the American experiment of self-government under law.
By training the young in the liberal arts, Hillsdale College prepares students to become leaders worthy of that legacy. By encouraging the scholarship of its faculty, it contributes to the preservation of that legacy for future generations. By publicly defending that legacy, it enlists the aid of other friends of free civilization and thus secures the conditions of its own survival and independence.

The result is unique film footage of the destroyed cities and its inhabitants, but also depressing images of the victims of terror and the policy of extermination.
