Young, ambitious businessman Jeffrey Byron and his sexually frustrated wife Marianne, and older repair contractor "Lucky" Mann and his former B-movie actress wife Phyllis, are unhappily married and living in Montreal, Canada. After 15 years of marriage, Phyllis tells her husband that he is not the father of their daughter and that she conceived the child via relations with attractive co-actor Jack when he was away on Navy duty. Lucky is deeply shocked by this, leaving the house to reflect upon their relationship, ultimately going to the bar and drinking in excess. After coming home, Lucky rails at his wife for being unfaithful, and throws household items at her. Upon hearing his tirade, their teenage daughter Daisy leaves the house the very same night. Her absence intensifies their negative relations and Lucky and Phyllis decide to stay together on certain terms, namely sleeping in different rooms and not with one another or others. They receive a letter from Daisy in which she writes that they are not fit to be her parents and she never wants to see them again. Consequently, Lucky and Phyllis sell their house and travel to Montreal, Canada, where the letter was post-marked in order to find her (though the viewer only comes to know this later in the film).
Afterglow is the third and final studio album by English-American hard rock band Black Country Communion. Recorded in June 2012 with regular producer Kevin Shirley, the album was released by J&R Adventures and Mascot Music in October 2012.
Background
Following the release of their critically successful second album 2 in 2011, Black Country Communion embarked on a promotional tour of the United States and Europe, and later released the video album Live Over Europe documenting a number of shows on the tour. In January 2012 it was reported that the band would begin work on the follow-up to 2 in June, with a release planned for later in the year. The writing process for the album, according to main songwriter Glenn Hughes, took approximately six months, compared to six weeks for Black Country and four months for 2.
Recording and production
The group began recording sessions for Afterglow on June 10, 2012. As with their previous two albums, BCC released a number of behind-the-scenes video clips of the recording process leading up to the album's announcement. Speaking about the recording of the album, Hughes has praised the vocal sound achieved by producer Kevin Shirley, stating that "We butted heads a little on the first and second albums, simply because we're both control freaks, but this was the record on which Kevin and [I] became friends".
"Afterglow" is a song recorded by Tina Turner, written and produced by Terry Britten and Graham Lyle. It appeared on her 1986 album Break Every Rule, and featured Steve Winwood on keyboards. The song was the eighth and final song from the album to be released as a single, if only in the United States. It failed to crack the US Hot 100, but it reached #5 on the US dance charts and #20 on the Maxi Single Sales chart. A promo video for the track was filmed as part of the Break Every Rule TV special in 1986, in which it was the opening number. It shows Turner performing the song in her dressing room at the club Le Zero in Paris as she is preparing to go on stage.
Afterglow is the first box set compilation by Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) released in 1990 with liner notes by music critic and editor Ira Robbins of Trouser Press fame. A different 2-CD compilation with identical artwork was released simultaneously under the title The Very Best of The Electric Light Orchestra (see below).
Overview Afterglow
The box set mixes the usual hit singles with lesser known album tracks and non-album B-sides, and is most notable for including most of the Secret Messages (1983) tracks that were not released when the intended album was reduced from a double to a single LP as well as B-sides from Balance of Power (1986) singles.
