“He Will Hold Me Fast” Ada R. Habershon & Robert Harkness hymn (on Edison cylinder)
The hymn “He Will Hold Me Fast” was once very popular.
Words are by Ada R. Habershon (1861-1918). Music is by Robert Harkness (1880-1961).
When I fear my faith will fail,
Christ will hold me fast;
When the tempter would prevail,
He can hold me fast.
He will hold me fast,
He will hold me fast;
For my Savior loves me so,
He will hold me fast.
I could never keep my hold,
He will hold me fast;
For my love is often cold,
He must hold me fast.
I am precious in His sight,
He will hold me fast;
Those He saves are His delight.
He will hold me fast.
He’ll not let my soul be lost,
Christ will hold me fast;
Bought by Him at such a cost,
He will hold me fast.

Will the Circle be Unbroken ~ Ada R. Habershon & Charles H. Gabriel
This is my take on Will the Circle be Unbroken. I hope you all enjoy this song. I've included the lyrics below for those who want to sing along:
There are loved ones in the glory[1]
Whose dear forms you often miss.
When you close your earthly story,
Will you join them in their bliss?
CHORUS:
Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, by and by?
Is a better home awaiting
In the sky, in the sky?
In the joyous days of childhood
Oft they told of wondrous love
Pointed to the dying Saviour;
Now they dwell with Him above.
(Chorus)
You remember songs of heaven
Which you sang with childish voice.
Do you love the hymns they taught you,
Or are songs of earth your choice?
(Chorus)
You can picture happy gath'rings
Round the fireside long ago,
And you think of tearful partings
When they left you here be...

Will The Circle be Unbroken (Ada R. Habershon and Charles H. Gabriel). Arr. P.M. Adamson
I recorded the Carter Family Version with Bob 231046 two years ago and found the original version recently in a manuscript from 1907. I based this version on the manuscript and original words. Although the melodies are similar the Carter Version lyrics are completely reworked.

Robert Harkness wrote this account of the hymn’s origin: “During a campaign in Toronto, Canada, young convert with whom I was dealing expressed the fear that he would not be able to hold out. A day or two later in a letter to Miss Ada Habershon, of London, I mentioned the need for a song which would give definite assurance of success in the Christian life. The weeks passed and a couple of months later during a great campaign in Philadelphia, U.S.A., I received a batch of seven new songs written by Miss Habershon. As Dr. Torrey preached his sermon one afternoon (instead of listening!) I occupied the time in setting the seven lyrics to music. One of these was He will hold me fast. The same evening it was introduced by Chas. M. Alexander to an audience of 4,000 people. Its success was immediate, and it has continued to be a great favorite. It has been translated into many languages.”

Isolation Video #118 Will the Circle Be Unbroken lyrics by Ada R. Habershon and music by Charles H. Gabriel recorded by Stephen Mendel on July 12, 2020
I thought that this intro would be simple and easy to write but lo and behold, there is more to the story. "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" started out as a hymn written in 1907 with lyrics by Ada R. Habershon and music by Charles H. Gabriel. I have never heard any of the original verses sung although the chorus remains. The original is quite churchy and mentions the savior and other such hymny stuff. The song evolved into what are called the "cowboy" or spiritualish lyrics of today via a re-write by A. P. Carter for the Carter Family and was turned into a funeral dirge. It's become a country classic by virtue of being performed at the Grand Old Opry either as an opener or a closer for decades. This is number 116 in my series of Isolation Videos started on March 17, 2020. My intention is to help alleviate some of the boredom and to keep myself somewhat sane. I usually perform with other musicians and I do have an album out there called Sing Me A Story, it's on the streaming sites.
Lyrics
I was standing by my window
On one cold and cloudy day
When I saw that hearse come rolling
For to carry my mother away
Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, Lord, by and by
There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, Lord, in the sky
I said to that undertaker
Undertaker please drive slow
For this lady you are carrying
Lord, I hate to see her go
Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, Lord, by and by
There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, Lord, in the sky
Oh, I followed close behind her
Tried to hold up and be brave
But I could not hide my sorrow
When they laid her in the grave
Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, Lord, by and by
There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, Lord, in the sky

On one cold and cloudy day
When I saw that hearse come rolling
For to carry my mother away
Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, Lord, by and by
There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, Lord, in the sky
I said to that undertaker
Undertaker please drive slow
For this lady you are carrying
Lord, I hate to see her go
Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, Lord, by and by
There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, Lord, in the sky
Oh, I followed close behind her
Tried to hold up and be brave
But I could not hide my sorrow
When they laid her in the grave
Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, Lord, by and by
There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, Lord, in the sky

WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN - Ada R. Habershon (1907)
1. There Are Loved Ones In The Glory
Whose Dear Forms You Often Miss,
When You Close Your Earthly Story
Will You Join Them In Their Bliss?
Refrain
Will The Circle Be Unbroken
By And By, Yes, By And By?
In A Better Home Awaiting
In The Sky, In The Sky?
2. In The Joyous Days Of Childhood,
Oft They Told Of Wondrous Love,
Pointed To The Dying Savior,
Now They Dwell With Him Above.
Refrain
Will The Circle Be Unbroken
By And By, Yes, By And By?
In A Better Home Awaiting
In The Sky, In The Sky?
3. You Remember Songs Of Heaven
Which You Sang With Childish Voice,
Do You Love The Hymns They Taught You,
Or Are Songs Of Earth Your Choice?
Refrain
Will The Circle Be Unbroken
By And By, Yes, By And By?
In A Better Home Awaiting
In The Sky, In The Sky?
4. You Can Picture Happy Gath’rings
Round The Fireside Long Ago,
And You Think Of Tearful Partings,
When They Left You Here Below.
Refrain
Will The Circle Be Unbroken
By And By, Yes, By And By?
In A Better Home Awaiting
In The Sky, In The Sky?
5. One By One Their Seats Were Empty,
One By One They Went Away,
Now The Fam'ly Is Parted,
Will It Be Complete One Day?
Refrain
Will The Circle Be Unbroken
By And By, Yes, By And By?
In A Better Home Awaiting
In The Sky, In The Sky?

DAAR'S BEMINDES IN DIE HEMEL - Ada R. Habershon (1907)
1. Daar's Bemindes In Die Hemel,
Hier Benede Reeds Gemis;
Sal Ons Na Die Aardse Loopbaan,
Deel In Gindse Erfenis?
Refrein
Sal Die Kring Daarbo Volmaak Wees,
Eenmaal Weer, Eenmaal Weer?
In Die Beter Hemelwoning,
By Die Heer, By Die Heer?
2. In Ons Blye Kinderdae,
Het Hul Ons Gods Woord Geleer;
Ons Gewys Op Jesus Liefde,
Nou Mag Hul Met Hom Verkeer.
Reffrein
Sal Die Kring Daarbo Volmaak Wees,
Eenmaal Weer, Eenmaal Weer?
In Die Beter Hemelwoning,
By Die Heer, By Die Heer?
3. Nog Gedenk Ons Samekomste,
Van Die Bly' Familiekring;
Ook Die Droewe Afskeidstrane
Wat Gevloei Het, Onbedwing.
Refrein
Sal Die Kring Daarbo Volmaak Wees,
Eenmaal Weer, Eenmaal Weer?
In Die Beter Hemelwoning,
By Die Heer, By Die Heer?
4. Langsaam Word Die Stoele Ledig;
Een Vir Een Het Weggegaan;
Sal Die Kring, Wat Hier Gebreek Is,
Eenmaal Daar Volmaak Bestaan?
Refrein
Sal Die Kring Daarbo Volmaak Wees,
Eenmaal Weer, Eenmaal Weer?
In Die Beter Hemelwoning,
By Die Heer, By Die Heer?
