Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War(エースコンバット5 ジ・アンサング・ウォー,Ēsu Konbatto Go Ji Ansangu Wō) (Ace Combat: Squadron Leader in Europe) is a semi-realistic flight combatvideo game for the PlayStation 2. Like other titles in Namco's Ace Combat series, Ace Combat 5 features gameplay that is a mix between arcade flight and authentic flight simulation. The game was developed by Project Aces, an internal Namco group credited with the development of the Ace Combat series, and was published by Namco in October 2004. A limited number of the games were bundled with the Hori Flightstick 2 accessory.
Ace Combat 5 features more than fifty licensed real-world jet aircraft. Nonetheless, the game's events and locations are set in a fictional world. The game's main campaign is set during a war between the fictitious nations of Osea and Yuktobania. The storyline revolves around the player character "Blaze," an Osean fighter pilot who leads a four-plane unit known as Wardog Squadron. The Unsung War follows this squadron's exploits as they attempt to ward off the Yuktobanian invasion of their homeland and uncover the truth about the war.

Is Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War The Perfect Ace Combat Game?
After Ace Combat 04, the franchise was set up for success. The game was not only the most critically acclaimed in the franchise, but it also outsold both Ace Combat 2 and 3. This might sound great, and that’s because it is, but it also means that the pressure was on the Project Aces team to make a worthy successor. Ace Combat 5 (Emulated) - M27+: The Unsung War
Ace Combat 5's final mission is a good display of everything people love about it. Aside from the overcast weather, this mission is absolutely beautiful from every aesthetic point of view. The music, the dialogue, the rising sun, the SOLG diving down to earth - and the task at hand itself. It's downright gorgeous. It's not a mission to rival Megalith or Zero, no, and it falters much in the same way the rest of the game goes - but I don't need to say that again. It plays to both its weaknesses and its strengths - The Unsung War is the perfect ending for an imperfect game.
Of course, it feels even more barren after we've seen ACI's SOLG, but the same can be said for any mission remade in ACI - it really did a good job of humbling the PS2's games in terms of scale, if only to lock their take...

The demon brings death to the earth
Then it dies

This game is a masterpiece.
Note that the game uses a licensed music track that I was forced to edit out before First Flight and during the credits. If missing 3-4 minutes total of some really generic song in this 7 hour long video is a problem: Sorry. I don't make copyright laws.
This game is also on PS4 and PS5 digitally but was part of a promotional thing for Ace Combat 7 and is no longer available to purchase due to yet more licensing issues.
Fortunately, this game can be played in hardware mode with minimal issue. The clouds are missing, which is a shame because they look really good and the burst missile graphic is a disaster.
I'm not using the interlace hack floating around because it causes the pre-rendered scenes to run at 24 fps. I'm using blend bff because it produces the best overall result in my opinion for the cutscenes out of the interlace methods, at the cost of blurring gameplay.
I played on normal difficulty.
This is segmented and edited. There are no in-mission edits.
It's not possible to complete every mission in a single playthrough. No plans on recording the missions I didn't show.
It's just two missions not shown, though.
Notes
As with Ace Combat 4, the mission replay is slow and missions are long so I skip it.
During White Noise, the location of the objective is randomized.
Fortress, 8492 and Final Option all play back to back with no breaks.
Same deal with Aces and the final mission.

Of course, it feels even more barren after we've seen ACI's SOLG, but the same can be said for any mission remade in ACI - it really did a good job of humbling the PS2's games in terms of scale, if only to lock their take behind a paywall and forced multiplayer. But wouldn't you like to see those as Ace of Aces missions for any classic game :)
PS: The Tomcat doesn't fit. I tried.

------------------------- Lyrics (English) -------------------------
When history changes greatly
Razgriz reveals itself
First as an evil demon
With its power
The demon brings death to the earth
Then it dies
When history changes greatly
Razgriz reveals itself
First as an evil Demon
When history changes greatly
Razgriz reveals itself
First as an evil Demon
When history
Changes greatly Razgriz
Reveals itself
First as an evil Demon
When its sleep ends
Razgriz rises again
As a great hero
History changes greatly
Razgriz reveals itself
As a great hero
History changes greatly
Razgriz reveals itself
As a great hero
When its sleep ends
Razgriz rises again
Razgriz
When history changes greatly
Razgriz reveals itself
First as an evil Demon
With its power
The demon brings death to the earth
Then it dies
When history changes greatly
Razgriz reveals itself
First as an evil Demon
When history changes greatly
Razgriz reveals itself
First as an evil demon
When history changes greatly
Razgriz reveals itself
First as an evil demon
When its sleep ends
Razgriz rises again
As a great hero
History changes greatly
Razgriz reveals itself
As a great hero
History changes greatly
Razgriz reveals itself
As a great hero

Razgriz rises again
Razgriz
When its sleep ends
Razgriz rises again

The events are set in 2010 in Strangereal and follows the Wardog Squadron, a frontier Osean squadron caught between rising hostilities between Osea and Yuktobania. Amidst the conflict, the four Wardog pilots unintentionally fulfill the prophecy of the Razgriz and uncover the sinister conspiracy pulling the strings behind the Circum-Pacific War...
And I know that for a lot of you in the comments and live stream chats, this is your personal favorite in the franchise, so again, my expectations were high going into this one. So, was Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War an improvement over the prior title, or did it fall short? Well, let’s talk about it.

Ace Combat 5's final mission is a good display of everything people love about it. Aside from the overcast weather, this mission is absolutely beautiful from every aesthetic point of view.
And so our sun may set, we've been in winter for so long Don't give up on me yet, I will give you what you deserve Though our arguments are many, and your eyes are always sore I promise you we'll get there, this war is almost won This war is almost won And lose if you have to Oh lose if you have to Cause I've been putting you through this hell for so long As long this stands your choice my dear, don't lose or we have won Don't let your heart grow cold, when you go to sleep upset Grow with me till we're old, we will find a way to heal The bruises that will appear, from choices long ago Hold on to our love my dear, don't think it's dead and done When this war is almost won And lose if you have to Oh lose if you have to Cause I've been putting you this hell for so long As long this stands your choice my dear, don't lose or we have won I'm running round in circles drinking whiskey and your wine To drown the sound of endless questions in your mind Forget the way I treated you and trust that I will love you better Give me all your patience, give me time x 3
