Good Seats Still Available 017: Abe Saperstein & the American Basketball League with Murry Nelson
Penn State University professor emeritus Murry Nelson (Abe Saperstein and the American Basketball League, 1960–1963: The Upstarts Who Shot for Three and Lost to the NBA) joins Tim Hanlon to discuss the oft-forgotten second incarnation of the ABL – and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer who willed it into being. In this hidden gem of an episode, Nelson describes:
How the master promoter of the legendary Harlem Globetrotters attempted to parlay his influence in pro basketball circles into securing his own West Coast NBA franchise, only to be rebuffed; How the advent of reliable and speedy commercial air travel encouraged Saperstein to not only launch the upstart ABL, but with franchises in virgin pro basketball territories like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Honolulu, Ha...

The Harlem Globetrotters are arguably one of the most famous teams in the history of professional basketball. Originating in the South Side of Chicago and eventually moving to New York City, the Globetrotters were and still are an exhibition basketball team who combine athleticism, comedy, and theater in their style of play. Shortly before this newsreel was released, the team had reached new heights of popularity stemming from their big win against the Minneapolis Lakers (now Los Angeles Lakers) at the World Professional Basketball Tournament in 1948. Produced by Castle Films, a film company founded by former newsreel cameraman Eugene W. Castle, the film highlights the profound skill set of the team both in regards to basketball and comedy. The film starts by capturing the Harlem Globetrotters as they do warm-up drills and later follows the team as they play and beat an opposing team in a basketball game.
Opening title: “The Fabulous Harlem Globetrotters” with animated figures of players (0:13). Harlem Globetrotters getting ball back from opponents once again (4:55). Players not cooperating with referee and keeping the ball away from him (5:15). Spectators standing to get a better view of player’s trickery (5:23). Player returns to court with one of the spectators’ hats doing tricks with the hat (5:26). Player 32, Leon Hillard, exemplifying master dribbling skills (6:14). Harlem Globetrotter’s conferencing on the sidelines with the team’s owner, manager, and founder Abe Saferstein (6:47). Injured player 36 going back into game to take foul shot (6:55). Trick shot using rubber-band ball (7:14). Another trick shot using jumping bean ball (7:40). Last chance at foul shot for player 36 (7:57). Referee in the face of player Meadowlark Lemon out of frustration (8:08). Final montage of the team’s comedic playing skills (8:21).
Meadowlark Lemon played for the Harlem Globetrotters from 1955-1980 before leaving to form his own team. For the 22 years Lemon played for the team he was called the “Clown Prince.”
Tony Hinkle was an American baseball, basketball, and football player, coach, and college athletic administrator. In the late 1950s he introduced the orange basketball that is in use today. Prior to this basketballs were generally dark brown.
Abe Saperstein was the founder, owner, and earliest coach of the Harlem Globetrotters. He was a leading figure in black basketball and baseball from the 1920s through the 1950s.

After initially forming in the 1920s the Harlem Globetrotters quickly inspired several other organizations to launch similarly themed touring companies of exhibition basketball teams combining comedic antics an stellar athleticism. Some competing companies featured notable players who had previously been under contract with the Harlem Globetrotters, and frequently adopted team names that were overtly suggestive of the famous Globetrotters moniker, and even player uniforms that were similarly designed to those of the original team.
In the early 1950s one such team was founded as The Fabulous Harlem Magicians, known more informally as the Harlem Magicians. This, along with the fact that many such competing teams not only featured ex-Globetrotter players but also on-court antics that had earlier been popularized by the Globetrotters prompted The Harlem Globetrotters to commission this promotional reel in 1956.
This cut was produced by Castle Films and distributed on 8mm silent film with scenes interspersed with interstitial text, with frequent use the word "Magic" or Magical in an attempt to more closely associate the term with the Harlem Globetrotters as opposed to the Harlem Magicians.
Also notable is the re-design of the player jerseys to feature the world "Original" over the team name.
The soundtrack to this video was generated with a collection of royalty-free music along with a cut of "Sweet Georgia Brown", long associated with The Harlem Globetrotters as their team theme song.

On February 27, 1949, the Minneapolis Lakers faced the Harlem Globetrotters in an exhibition before 20,046
Although this was the Lakers’ first year in the Basketball Association of America, they were defending champions of the National Basketball League, having won the 1947-48 NBL title before switching leagues
While there is evidence of the Trotters’ flair, make no mistake—this was a straight-up game, and George Mikan’s boys were not the Washington Generals. The Lakers held a 24-18 lead at halftime, but the Globetrotters easily outclassed a tired Minneapolis side in the second half for a 49-45 win
Mikan led all scorers with 19 points, with 11 from the charity stripe. Goose Tatum led the winners with 14, and Sweetwater Clifton added 11
As this was the first game of a BAA doubleheader, it set an attendance mark for that league, as it was presumed everyone stayed to watch the Washington Capitols defeat the Chicago Stags, 67-57. The previous record for attendance was set a year earlier, when 17,823 came to the Stadium to watch the New York Knicks play the Stags; not coincidentally, that was also the second game of a doubleheader that again matched the Globetrotters with Minneapolis, with Abe Saperstein’s team defeating the ultimate 1947-48 champions with a buzzer-beater, 61-59
The importance of the Globetrotters in helping to sustain early professional basketball cannot be overstated, as evidenced by the crowds they would draw for BAA doubleheaders; by comparison, a playoff game between the Stags and Minneapolis that year only drew 4,362 to Chicago Stadium
Small wonder that Saperstein felt betrayed when the BAA began drafting African-Americans to play in the league in 1950, with Boston tabbing Globetrotter Chuck Cooper, and New York signing Sweetwater Clifton
While top black players would soon choose the BAA (soon to become the NBA after a merger with the National Basketball League), the Globetrotters would still strive to play “real” basketball for a number of years, with top players like Wilt Chamberlain and Connie Hawkins playing with them for a spell. As more opportunities became available to players of color in the NBA (and, for a time, American Basketball Association), the team devolved into the purely entertaining side so beloved today

Footage from a March 23, 1951 game between the Philadelphia Spahs and Harlem Globetrotters, played before 11,365 fans at the Montreal Forum
This was the second game of a doubleheader; the first game featured the New York Rens playing the St. Louis All-Stars. All four teams were part of a package tour, and alternated playing against one another (for example, the night before the Trotters played St. Louis in Ottawa)
Among the players for the Globetrotters are Grider (17), Tatum (11), Haynes (18), Gates (10), Wilson (20), Brown (15), Pressly (12), and Hunt (19). Players for the Sphas included Morgantaylor (18), Glick (9), Brown (10), Stein (12)
The Trotters ran up an early lead, and were up 34-26 at the half. With the game well in hand, they were able to resort to their trademark clowning early, as seen in the footage. The finals score was 68-44 in favor of the Globetrotters
The Globies' opponent on this evening was the Philadelphia Sphas, themselves a storied club. The Sphas (also stylized SPHAs or SPHAS) existed in professional, semi-professional, and exhibition forms throughout their existence between 1917 until their folding in 1959. The team's name is an acronym, derived from South Philadelphia Hebrew Association (the group that initially funded the team), and the team's players, at least in its earlier years, were primarily Jewish. The Sphas won a total of 12 championships, their first two coming from the early Philadelphia League and Philadelphia Basket Ball League, and another seven coming in the American Basketball League
Originally owned and organized by Eddie Gottlieb, by 1926-27, the original side had evolved into the Philadelphia Warriors, playing in the American Basketball League. After that league took a two year hiatus, the team was rebranded Spahs upon its return in 1933-34. When the Basketball Association of America formed in 1946, Gottlieb entered a new team, also called Philadelphia Warriors. With that, the Spahs reverted to semi-professional status in the ABL, eventually leaving the league in 1949. In 1950, Gottlieb sold the Spahs to Red Klotz, himself a former Spah, and the latter used his association with Globetrotters owner Abe Saperstein to keep the team going as opponents for the famous team. Although keeping the "Spahs" name, Klotz' side had long abandoned its all-Jewish roots
If Klotz' name sounds familiar, it's because he was the owner/coach of the Washington Generals for many years. However, the Sphas did not directly evolve into the Washington Generals. Rather, Saperstein had asked Klotz to create a separate exhibition team because the Sphas had beaten the Globetrotters on more than one occasion. After creating the Generals, Klotz sold the Sphas to one of his players, Pete Monska, who coached the team for a year or two until it disbanded [in October 1959. The Sphas played their last game as the original team on October 17, 1959, losing to the Globetrotters in a double-header exhibition game.
The Sphas were then reconstituted as the Baltimore Rockets, another Globetrotters exhibition team

How the master promoter of the legendary Harlem Globetrotters attempted to parlay his influence in pro basketball circles into securing his own West Coast NBA franchise, only to be rebuffed; How the advent of reliable and speedy commercial air travel encouraged Saperstein to not only launch the upstart ABL, but with franchises in virgin pro basketball territories like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Honolulu, Hawaii; The peripatetic Washington-to-New York-to-Philadelphia Tapers, whose owner also secretly owned the relatively stable Pittsburgh Rens, featuring league superstar and future Hall of Famer Connie Hawkins; Why the ABL’s (and Saperstein-owned) Chicago Majors outdrew the more-established NBA’s cross-town Packers; and How an ambitious young shipbuilding scion named George Steinbrenner engineered a championship for his Cleveland Pipers franchise, only to sink the ABL the following season with an ill-fated plot to secretly bolt to the NBA.
