Afia was born in Pakistan and spent here childhood there. In 1990 she went to study neuroscience in the United States and obtained a Ph.D. from Brandeis University in 2001.
She subsequently disappeared until she was arrested in Ghazni, Afghanistan, by Afghan police, 17 July 2008, with documents and notes for making bombs plus containers of sodium cyanide. She was held for questioning. Siddiqui was shot in the torso the next day by visiting U.S. FBI and Army personnel, after allegedly shooting at them with a rifle one of the interrogators had placed on the floor.
Siddiqui is a family name or surname. Siddiqui means The Truthful in Arabic. Siddiquis are spread all over the world mainly the Middle east, Asia Pacific and Europe. Siddiquis are the descendants of the first Muslim Caliph Abu Bakr as-Siddiq of the Rashidun Caliphate (The four Rightly guided Calips). The title "Siddiq" .(The Truthful) was given to Abu Bakr by the Prophet Mohammad himself.
Siddiqui is sometimes also rendered as Siddiqi, Sediqi, Siddique, Siddiquee, Siddighi, Sadighi, Seddighi, Sidiki, Siddiki, or Siddiquie.
The Siddiqui surname is found among a number of ethnic groups and communities after its spread from Middle East to Africa, Central Asia, and South Asia.
Between 1690 and the early 20th century, the District of Badaun, in India, was ruled by the Rohilla Siddiqi Nawabs.

Although the war on terror is now a distant memory to many Americans, it’s horrible residue remains. The incarceration of Aafia Siddiqui, a brilliant academic and mother of three, has become a symbol of its excesses, of which there were many. She languishes in prison, serving an 86-year sentence for an offence that looks barely credible, the attempted murder of two US officials in Afghanistan in 2008. Her whereabouts before that date remain murky, and so does the welfare of her youngest son Suleman – who has not been seen since her detention in 2003.
To help us unpick the facts, we have invited Aafias lawyer Clive Stafford Smith to shed light on what happened to Aafia and her children. Clive has helped secure the release of 86 prisoners from Guantánamo Bay and still acts for the remaining numbers. Since the early days of the War on Terror, he has worked tirelessly to force the Americans and other Western powers to adhere to the rule of law. He has sought to uncover the secret prisons and ghost prisoners that stain the reputation of powerful states – who presented their wars in benevolent terms.

Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah compared the United States (US) President-elect Donald Trump and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, citing what he termed ‘similarities’ in their style of politics.
Rana Sanaullah said that both Imran Khan and Donald Trump are ‘known for spreading falsehoods, mocking others and attacking institutions’.
“There are many similarities between them (Imran Khan and Donald Trump) like lying, making fun of others, and resorting to illegal activities for the acceptance of their demands. He (Donald Trump) gathered his supporters and attacked the White House,” the special assistant to the prime minister on political affairs said.
To a question regarding Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz’s felicitation statements for to the US president-elect, Rana Sanaullah said that was ‘just a mere diplomatic gesture and formality’.

March 31 marks 18 years since Dr. Aafia Siddiqui's kidnapping and abduction. The mysterious case has become internationally known, symbolising the atrocities linked to the so-called ‘War on Terror.’ Her case also exposed collaboration between Pakistani and US authorities. She has been dubbed the 'Daughter of Pakistan’ by some and ‘Lady Al Qaeda’ by others. Dr. Siddiqui has been convicted of multiple felonies and is serving an 86-year sentence at the Federal Medical Center (FMC) Carswell in Texas. Here is her story. #AafiaSiddiqui #DaughterofPakistan #US
Two teenagers are being questioned in the UK after a British gunman took four hostages at a Texas synagogue. But why was he demanding the release of Aafia Siddiqui and who is she?
In part 2 of this episode of Centre Stage, we conclude our interview with Clive Stafford Smith, a civil rights lawyer who represents Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani American woman serving an 86-year prison sentence — a victim, says Stafford Smith, of the United States’s so-called “war on terror”.
Maryam Nemazee is a presenter at Al Jazeera.

You can write to Dr Aafia via her lawyer on email [email protected] . The deadline for the first round of letters is 1/8/23 - you can still send letters after this date for future visits. Please place in the subject of the email: Thinking Muslim letter for Aafia.
Clive has set up a crowdfunding page for a monthly standing order/debit for Aafia; this is to pay for a young Pakistani researcher to help on the case and to fund the trips to the US etc. Use - https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/freeaafia/backers#start

A woman has gone on trial in the US in a case that has provoked anger and concern from Islamabad to New York.
Aafia Siddiqui is charged with trying to kill American troops in Afghanistan last month.
Al Jazeera's John Terrett reports.
