Stephen Fry was very nearly an American. Just before Stephen was born, his father was offered a job at Princeton University, but chose to turn it down.
And so, Stephen was born in NW3 rather than in NJ, New Jersey.
In this six-part series he travels, mostly in a London cab, through all 50 states of the country that he could have nearly called home and which has always fascinated him.
In this first episode, he explores the states that make up New England, before heading south to the nation's capital and ending up at the civil war battlefield of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania. Presidential hopefuls in New Hampshire, witches in Salem, nuclear submariners in Connecticut, deer hunters, small time mobsters in NYC, so...

The high mesas of New Mexico are the starting point for Stephen's journey through the dramatic landscapes and peoples of the South West. The physicists at the Los Alamos lab, who are unravelling the mysteries of dark matter, contrast starkly to the ecohouse dwellers living off the grid near Sante Fe.
Staying with the Navajo Indians in Monument Valley in Arizona, Stephen learns to weave a basket, before heading to the sublime beauty of Lake Powell and life aboard a luxurious houseboat. He takes a World War II Flying Fortress bomber to the 'Boneyard' in Tucson, where 3,000 military planes are eerily mothballed, before living out a fantasy by becoming a cowboy at the Old Tucson Studios.

In this special event in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Royal Society of Literature, RSL Fellow Stephen Fry talks to comedian and author Shappi Khorsandi about writing across forms – from sketch comedy to poetry, independently and in collaboration, written and performed – that has elevated him to the status of national treasure.
Stephen grew up in a house with colossal bookcases filled with classic works of literature, and would use them as medicine cabinets to treat his childhood. He has remarked that writing is a ‘newer technology – only five or six thousand years old’ by which ‘we can change utterance into permanence’, and when once asked for writing advice, he responded: ‘the important thing to do for those who want to liberate their writing is to be able to let go of their self-consciousness, to allow the words to write for them.’
Presented in Partnership with the Royal Society of Literature.
Stephen Fry was elected a Fellow of the RSL in 2019. He is an actor, screenwriter, author, playwright, journalist, poet, comedian, television presenter and film director. He has written and presented several documentary series, contributed columns and articles for newspapers and magazines, appears frequently on radio, reads for voice-overs and has written four novels and three volumes of autobiography, Moab Is My Washpot, The Fry Chronicles and More Fool Me. His re-tellings of Greek myths Mythos and Heroes will be followed by Troy this Autumn.
Shappi Khorsandi is a comedian and author who has appeared on countless TV and Radio shows including; Live At The Apollo, 8 Out Of 10 Cats, Have I Got News For You, QI, The Graham Norton Show and as a contestant on I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here. She is the author of the bestselling memoir, A Beginner's Guide To Acting English which tells the story of how her family were forced to flee Iran and gain asylum in the UK, and her first novel, Nina is Not OK. She is also the president of the British Humanist Association.

In this week's A-List Insider:
Stephen Fry gets married, Amber Rose breaks the internet and we lose a Coronation Street legend.
Stephen Fry marries Elliot Spencer
Stephen Fry surprised fans this weekend when he quietly got hitched to his partner Elliott Spencer, just 10 days after announcing their engagement.
The 57-year-old actor and television presenter confirmed the wedding news to his 8.5 million followers on Twitter, posting a picture showing him and his 27-year-old partner signing a marriage register.

The wedding reportedly took place in the Breckland Business Centre, and both men wore green carnations for their big day.
Wow! We were not expecting that!
Amber Rose breaks the internet
While some people have been busy getting married, Amber Rose is in Miami enjoying her technically single life.
Wiz Khalifa's estranged wife was showing of her cakes in all their voluptuous glory this weekend and it's safe to say that she shut down the internet.
Three back-to-back pictures posted on Instagram show the blonde bombshell posing on a balcony in dental-floss inspired swimsuit and heels. She tagged the snaps "Fleekin", "Stifler's Mom" and "Slaying".
One fan even asked to drink her bath water. Yikes!
It looks like anything Kim K can do Amber rose can do better!
Corrie actor Anne Kirkbride dead
And finally Coronation Street legend Anne Kirkbride has died aged 60.
The actress best known for playing Deirdre Barlow on the ITV soap for 43 years, passed away at a Manchester hospital following a short illness her husband David Beckett said.
Anne last appeared on screen in October. She had been expected to return to the show this month after an eight week break.
William Roache, who played Anne on-screen husband Ken Barlow, said the soap has lost one of its iconic characters.
"She was such a loving and vibrant person. You always knew she was there because her laugh was never far away," he said.

"Gosh. @ElliottGSpencer and I go into a room as two people, sign a book and leave as one. Amazing." he captioned the snap.
