Studio 54 was a popular New York nightclub from 1977 to 1981, when it was sold by founders and creators Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager. It continued to operate as a nightclub until 1991 by other owners. Located at 254 West 54th Street in Manhattan, New York City, the space was originally the Gallo Opera House, opening in 1927, after which it changed names several times, eventually becoming CBS radio and television Studio 52. Since November 1998 it has been a venue for the Roundabout Theatre Company and is still called Studio 54, but is no longer a nightclub. A separate restaurant and nightclub, called 54 Below, operates in the basement of the famed venue.
History
Designed by famed architect Eugene De Rosa, the venue opened in 1927 as the Gallo Opera House (soon revised to Gallo Theatre), named for its owner, Fortune Gallo. Beginning with a very large-scale production of La Bohème which closed after three weeks, the Gallo was met with a succession of failed attempts to draw an audience, and was lost to foreclosure after only two years. It later reopened under new ownership as The New Yorker, but continued failing to attract sufficient crowds. It changed hands in the early 1930s, then 1937 it became the WPAFederal Music Project of New York City's Federal Music Theatre/Theatre of Music then it became the New Yorker Theatre in 1939, housing an all-black version of The Swing Mikado, originally from Chicago, for two months, when the production moved to the 44th Street Theatre to finish its run. The New Yorker Theatre saw its final production, Medicine Show, end in May 1940, following which the building remained vacant for three years.
Studio 54 opened in Las Vegas in December 1997 and closed in February 2012 at the MGM Grand.
Designed to be a replica of the original Studio 54 nightclub, it had most of the original elements and equipment, including the "Man in the Moon" and the spoon, however the two were never displayed together.
The club was visited on opening night by Elton John, one of the most frequent guests at the original location.
It was one of Las Vegas' most popular dance clubs, with a reputation for a strict door policy, but not as strict as the original's. However, the newer site is cause for contention amongst fans of the original location, who have charged that the Las Vegas venue is nothing more than Studio 54 in name only.
Studio 54 Radio is a disco and freestyle music radio station, The station is operated by Sirius XM Radio and is classified under the "Pop" category. The channel was originally known as The Strobe from 2002 to 2011, when it was relaunched under its current incarnation, a homage to the New York City discothèque Studio 54.
On November 12, 2008, The Strobe was eliminated from the Sirius lineup as a result of the Sirius/XM channel lineup reorganization. On December 16, due to subscriber demand, Sirius XM Radio announced that the channel would be reactivated on January 15, 2009.
On January 15, 2009, The Strobe returned to the Sirius lineup and made its debut on XM (on XM83, where the similarly-formatted Chrome had been prior to the November 2008 channel realignment).
On May 28, 2010 through noon on June 1, 2010, Beach Party Radio replaced The Strobe for the Memorial Day Weekend. On July 1, 2010 though July 7, 2010 at 3 AM ET, Beach Party Radio again replaced The Strobe for the July 4th weekend. On September 3, 2010 at 9 AM, Beach Party Radio replaced The Strobe until Tuesday, September 7, 2010.
Studio 54: In the late 1970s, at the peak of the disco dancing and music trend, the building was renamed after its location, and became a world-famous nightclub and discotheque. The nightclub founders spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on professional lighting design, and kept many of the former TV and theatrical sets, in the process creating a unique dance club that became famous for its celebrity guest lists, restrictive (and subjective) entry policies (based on one's appearance and style), and open club drug use.
