In 2007 the ATP Tour announced that major changes will take place in 2009. The Masters Series will be renamed to the Masters 1000, with the addition of the number 1000 referring to the amount of ranking points which are won.
Tournaments
Note: Although the Monte Carlo Masters is billed as taking place in Monte Carlo, it is actually held in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, a commune of France adjacent to Monaco.
The ATP World Tour Masters 1000 is a series of nine tennis tournaments that are part of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) tour, held annually throughout the year in Europe, North America and Asia. The series constitutes the most prestigious tournaments in men's tennis after the four Grand Slam events and the ATP World Tour Finals.
Results in ATP Masters 1000 events earn players more world ranking points than regular tournaments, though not as many as Grand Slam events or the year-end ATP World Tour Finals. Up until 2007, most Masters Series finals were contested as best of five-set matches. Currently, all Masters Series events are decided in best of three-set matches.
Rafael Nadal holds the record for the most singles titles with 27 since the Masters series began in 1990. The Bryan Brothers have won a record 35 doubles titles, all as a team. No man has ever won all 9 singles titles in his career, with Novak Djokovic winning 8, and Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal each winning 7 out of 9 titles. However, in doubles, Daniel Nestor and the Bryan Brothers (Bob and Mike) have each won all 9 titles throughout their careers. Novak Djokovic holds the record for 6 singles titles in a year. In doubles, the Bryans have won 6 titles in a single year once (2014) and 5 titles in a single year twice (2007 and 2013).
The Masters Series is a yearly award and accompanying exhibition started by School of Visual Arts founder Silas Rhodes in 1988. Recipients have included designers, illustrators, art directors and photographers. Rhodes started the program to bring attention to "great visual communicators":

There's more to Tennis than Grand Slams - mastering the Super 9
Federer, Nadal and Djokovic - Many people believe that the Big 3 are the best tennis players in history, even though it’s always hard to compare athletes of different generations. But they set many incredible tennis records & produced some of the best & most exiting tennis – like in 2006 when Rafael Nadal & Roger Federer battled out an epic 5 set match that many Tennis fans still fondly remember today. But while this is seen as one of the best clay court matches ever, it was „only“ the final of the Rome Masters. Which IS an important event on the Tennis calendar. But while Rafa, Roger & Novak are considered some of, if not the greatest in history…
the ATP MASTERS 1000 tournaments still stand in the shadow of the 4 GRAND SLAMS (Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon, Us Open) At least casual Tennis fans that don’t follow the sports regularly, might never have paid that much attention to these other 9 tournaments, yet they make up a big chunk of the Tennis season and are important to players.
Just like how football isn’t just the world cup, Tennis doesnt consist only of the Grand Slams even if fans usually talk about the number of Grand Slams during debates about who is the GOAT of Tennis. Of course the Slams are indeed the biggest tournaments which every Tennis players aspires to win. But they are only the peaks during the ATP and WTA season.
When the ATP reorganized the Tennis calendar in 1990, it took the 9 most prestigious tournaments from the previous Grand Prix Tour and made them form the new „ATP Championship Series, Single Week “ As they were now ranked 2nd only to the Grand Slams not just in prestige but also in ranking points, these tournaments were highly contested.
THE 9 MASTERS TOURNAMENTS
- In the early 90s the series consisted of the events in
- Indian Wells & Miami (forming the „Sunshine Double“)
- Montecarlo, Hamburg & Rome (on clay)
- the Canada Open & Cincinnati Open
- the Indoors events in Stockholm & Paris.
The Stockholm Open would then be replaced in 1995 by the Eurocard Open, which was first played in Essen, Germany, and then moved to Stuttgart (until 2001).
In 2002 Stuttgart dropped out of the category and was replaced by the newly founded indoors hard court tournament in Madrid where Andre Agassi became the first ever champion.
In 2009 Hamburg was demoted to an ATP 500 event and replaced by the Madrid Masters which switched from indoors hard courts to outdoors clay courts. Madrid’s previous spot in October was taken over by the new Shanghai Masters.
NAME CHANGES OF THE SERIES
1990 – 95 of the ATP Championship Series, Single Week
1996 – 99 Super 9
2000 – 04 Tennis Masters Series
2004 – 08 ATP Masters Series
2009 – 18 ATP World Tour Masters 1000
2019 – today ATP Masters 1000
ALL THE ATP MASTERS 1000 CHAMPIONS
Amongst the champions of the first few editions of this category were some all time Tennis greats, like Boris Becker, Jim Courier and Andre Agassi. Stefan Edberg immediately won 3 of the 9 titles in 1990. While Sampras had set the more well known record of 14 Grand Slam tournaments, Agassi eclipsed him in numbers of Masters titles.
In the 2000s Roger Federer & Rafael Nadal dominated the Masters events like the Grand Slams. The pair won 8 of the 9 Tennis Masters in 2005 with Nadal especially dominating on clay. In 2010 the king of clay even became the only man to date to win all 3 clay Masters in the same season. A year later Nadal would reach the final of the first 5 Masters of the season, but was beaten in 4 of them by Novak Djokovic who was rising. In early 2014 Nadal & Djokovic held all 9 Masters titles simultaneously, having both managed to win 4 consecutive titles each.
Do you know which Tennis player has won the most ATP Masters 1000 events so far? And who is the only man to have accomplished the „Golden Masters“ (winning all 9 throughout one’s career)

The Internazionali d'Italia was founded in 1930 as the Italian International Championships. Until 1934 it was held in Milan before moving to the Foro Italico in Rome in 1935, where it is still being played today. In 1969 it became an Open event, meaning that professional tennis players were allowed to participate.
ABOUT THE ATP MASTERS 1000
Which is your favourite Masters event? Since 1990 there have been 9 Masters 1000 tournaments each season (but the name of the series changed a few times). Only in the 2020 and 2021 ATP season some of the Masters events had to be cancelled.
After the Australian Open in January, the first Grand Slam of the year, the Tennis season continues in March with the next highlights at the Indian Wells and Miami Masters. Together they are known as the Sunshine Double. Then the European Clay Court Season starts. The 3 clay Masters in Montecarlo, Madrid and Rome lead to the next Grand Slam: the French Open aka Roland Garros. The Wimbledon Championships follow shortly after and unfortunately there is no ATP Masters 1000 event on grass courts. In August the Canada Open, switching annually between Montreal and Toronto, is the first big tournament of the summer North American Hard Court Season. The Cincinnati Masters follows right after it. Then, the US Open concludes that part of the season, being the last of the 4 Grand Slams as well. Late in the year before the season ending championships, the ATP Finals in Turin, Shanghai and Paris host the last of the 9 ATP Masters 1000. Do you know which players have won the most titles at all these events? Or who won the most overall Masters Titles since 1990? You can find all of these statistics on this channel. Enjoy.

But as the ATP 2023 season is approaching the Sunshine Double (Indian Wells & Miami Masters), we want to have a look at all the ranking and statistics of all past ATP Masters 1000 champions from 1990 to 2022. If you're just a casual Tennis fan and you ever wondered: What are the biggest tennis tournaments besides the Grand Slams? - Then here is your answer.

See all the Rome Masters 1000 winners from 1969 -2022 and find out how much Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic dominated the tournament in the last years. Everybody knows Rafael Nadal is the clay goat of Tennis. But Novak Djokovic also won several titles in Rome.
THE HISTORY OF THE ATP ROME MASTERS 1000
The Italian Open (Internazionali d'Italia) is one of the three clay Masters 1000 of the season. Together with the Madrid Masters it is the best preparation for Roland Garros ornthe French Open, the Clay Grand Slam that ends the Clay season before the Tour moves on to Wimbledon in July. Winning the Madrid Masters and the Rome Masters in the same season is a highly difficult but prestigious feit as the two tournamens take place within two consecutive weeks. It is not unlikely for players who had a deep run in Madrid to skip the event in Rome just like this year when Carlos Alcaraz won the Madrid Masters but then needed some rest before Roland Garros.
Enjoy.
