The race was won by Ryan Hunter-Reay driving the No. 28 DHL Dallara-Honda for Andretti Autosport. It was marred, however, by an incident involving Sage Karam and Justin Wilson twenty laps from the finish that resulted in Wilson suffering a serious head injury which proved to be fatal.
Background
The race was run on Sunday, August 23, 2015. The scheduled distance was 500 miles (800 kilometres), which required 200 laps around the triangular oval 2.5 miles (4.0 kilometres) in length.
Recap
The pole position was won by Hélio Castroneves of Team Penske, driving the No. 3 car. Penske Chevrolets qualified in the first three positions, with Castroneves' teammate Simon Pagenaud starting alongside him in the No. 22 and defending series champion Will Power behind him in position three.
The company was founded in 1982 by Ken Hendricks and Diane Hendricks. It grew from a single store in Wisconsin to having over 490 branches in 49 states nationwide.
ABC Supply has expanded from its original business. In early 2010, the company acquired Bradco Supply, its largest acquisition to date.
Annual sales topped US$4.6 billion in 2013, ranking on the 84 spot in Forbes list of largest private companies.
Recognition
The company has won the Gallup Great Workplace Award for seven consecutive years, 2007-2013.
Corporate governance
By the time of his accidental death on December 21, 2007, CEO and founder Ken Hendricks was the 107th richest person in America according to Forbes October 2006 issue. President David Luck was named CEO to succeed him. The most current CEO is Keith Rozolis Luck retired on December 31, 2013 and was replaced by Keith Rozolis.
The ABC Supply 500 is an Indy car race held at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvania. The race was sanctioned by USAC from 1971–1981, and then by CART from 1982–1989, and was known as the Pocono 500. The race was removed from the CART calendar following the 1989 running, due to poor track conditions, as well as poor revenue for the promoter.
After a 23-year hiatus, the event was successfully revived by the Verizon IndyCar Series in 2013. Following management changes at the facility, and after comprehensive safety improvements were completed at the track, the race was scheduled for Independence Day weekend. For 2013, the race was scheduled for 400 miles, and was part of the "Triple Crown". For 2014, the race returned to its traditional 500-mile distance.
The 2014 race, won by Juan Pablo Montoya, stands as the fastest 500-mile race in Indy car history. At an average speed of 202.402mph (325.734km/h), it was the first 500-mile race to be completed in under 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Open wheel racing at the track dates back to 1937. AAA sanctioned races in 1937–1939, 1941, and 1946–1955. The track was paved in 1954.
USAC sanctioned Championship car races from 1956–1979. In 1980, the race switched to a CART/Champ Car race, and continued through 2006. IndyCar started holding races at the track in 2004, and thus for a brief time from 2004-2006, the track hosted both a Champ Car race (June) and an IndyCar race (August).
Starting in 2007, IndyCar became the lone event. The race was put on hiatus for 2010, stemming from management difficulties regarding payment of sanctioning fees. In 2011, the race returned and continues to be held.
Race scheduling
For most years starting in 1949, Milwaukee traditionally hosted the first race following the Indianapolis 500. From 1947 to 1982, Milwaukee generally hosted two races, the first race right after Indy in June, and the second in August or September. The latter sometimes in the days surrounding the Wisconsin State Fair.
Wisconsin's geography is diverse, with the Northern Highland and Western Upland along with a part of the Central Plain occupying the western part of the state and lowlands stretching to the shore of Lake Michigan. Wisconsin is second to Michigan in the length of its Great Lakes coastline.
Wisconsin is known as "America's Dairyland" because it is one of the nation's leading dairy producers, particularly famous for cheese. Manufacturing, especially paper products, information technology (IT), and tourism are also major contributors to the state's economy.
The Wisconsin Winery Association is a statewide organization that promotes wine making in the state.
History
The first wine grapes were planted in Wisconsin by Agoston Haraszthy in the mid-19th century. Before he migrated to California and helped to found the wine industry there, he established a vineyard, winery and wine cellars overlooking the Wisconsin River at what is today the Wollersheim Winery near Prairie du Sac. Although Haraszthy found the climate of Wisconsin difficult for wine grape production, later German settlers produced wine using both European and native American grape varieties.
The commission to create the statue of Wisconsin on the top of the dome was originally promised to Helen Farnsworth Mears, originally of Wisconsin. When Daniel Chester French agreed to produce the finial figure, the commission was switched to him.
Description
This work, often referred to as the "Golden Lady", consists of an allegorical figure reminiscent of Athena, dressed in Greek garb, her right arm outstretched to symbolize the state motto, "Forward", and wearing a helmet topped by a badger, the Wisconsin state totem.
The figure's left hand holds a globe with an eagle perched on top. Across the eagle's chest is a large W, for Wisconsin, a detail hard to discern.
Wisconsin is 15ft 5in (4.70m) tall and weighs 3 short tons (2.7t).
The lady is also in a mural in the House of Representatives.
