The history of Tucson stretches back thousands of years, with the original inhabitants being Native American peoples such as the Hohokam. These indigenous communities left a lasting legacy, including sophisticated irrigation canals that are still marveled at today. The city itself was officially founded in 1775 by Spanish soldiers, making it one of the oldest continually inhabited areas in the United States.
Through the Gadsden Purchase in 1854, Tucson came under American control and quickly became a hub of activity. It saw the coming of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1880, which further spurred its growth. Throughout the 20th century, Tucson expanded rapidly, with its economy diversifying and its population booming. Today, it is a vibrant city that celebrates its rich history with events like the annual Tucson Rodeo, La Fiesta de los Vaqueros, and the All Souls Procession, a unique take on the Day of the Dead traditions.
Tourism remains a robust economic driver, with visitors drawn to the city's resorts, golf courses, and renowned attractions like the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and Saguaro National Park.
Tucson consistently ranks as one of the more affordable cities in the United States. The cost of living is relatively low when compared to other metropolitan areas, particularly housing costs. According to real estate data, the median home price in Tucson is considerably lower than the national average, making homeownership accessible for many residents. Tucson's median home price is about 475 thousand dollars while median rent is about fourteen hundred a month.

Major incorporated suburbs of Tucson include Oro Valley and Marana northwest of the city, Sahuarita south of the city, and South Tucson in an enclave south of downtown. Communities in the vicinity of Tucson (some within or overlapping the city limits) include Casas Adobes, Catalina Foothills, Flowing Wells, Midvale Park, Tanque Verde, Tortolita, and Vail. Towns outside the Tucson metro area include Benson to the southeast, Catalina and Oracle to the north, and Green Valley to the south.
Tucson was founded as a military fort by the Spanish when Hugo O'Conor authorized the construction of Presidio San Agustín del Tucsón in 1775. It was included in the state of Sonora after Mexico gained independence from the Spanish Empire in 1821. In 1853, the United States acquired a 29,670 square miles (76,840 km2) region of present-day southern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico from Mexico under the Gadsden Purchase. Tucson served as the capital of the Arizona Territory from 1867 to 1877. Tucson was Arizona's largest city by population during the territorial period and early statehood, until it was surpassed by Phoenix by 1920. Nevertheless, population growth remained strong during the late 20th century. In 2017, Tucson was the first American city to be designated a "City of Gastronomy" by UNESCO.
Tucson is sometimes referred to as "The Old Pueblo".
Downtown and Central Tucson
A 19th-century adobe house in the Armory Park neighborhood
Similar to many other cities in the Western U.S., Tucson was developed by European Americans on a grid plan starting in the late 19th century, with the city center at Stone Avenue and Broadway Boulevard. While this intersection was initially near the geographic center of Tucson, that center has shifted as the city has expanded far to the east. Development to the west was effectively blocked by the Tucson Mountains. Covering a large geographic area, Tucson has many distinct neighborhoods.
Tucson's earliest neighborhoods, some of which were redeveloped and covered by the Tucson Convention Center (TCC), include:
El Presidio, Tucson's oldest neighborhood
Barrio Histórico, also known as Barrio Libre
Armory Park, directly south of downtown
Barrio Anita, named for an early settler and located between Granada Avenue and Interstate 10
Barrio Tiburón, now known as the Fourth Avenue arts district, was designated in territorial times as a red-light district
Barrio El Jardín, named for an early recreational site, Levin's Gardens
Barrio El Hoyo, named for a lake that was part of the gardens. Before the convention center was built, the term El Hoyo (Spanish for 'pit' or 'hole') referred to this part of the city. Residents were mostly Mexican-American citizens and Mexican immigrants.
Barrio Santa Rosa, dating from the 1890s, is now listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places.

Deportations take place in Arizona on President Trump's first full day in office
With all their belongings in red bags, people were deported through the DiConcini Port of Entry in Nogales, Arizona on Tuesday morning. After promising to remove "millions" of people from the United States in his inaugural speech, deportations continued at the port. Why Phoenix Became A Hot Spot For Tech Companies
While cities like Austin, Texas have garnered attention for drawing tech companies away from Silicon Valley, another hub is emerging as a major power player — Phoenix, Arizona. The fifth largest U.S. city has been a longtime hub for aerospace and defense, now it’s becoming an epicenter of semiconductor manufacturing and autonomous vehicles. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company recently completed the most advanced chip fab on U.S. soil and has pledged to invest $65 billion in the area. The city is also where Waymo launched its commercial robotaxi service, and now it’s the new home of Amazon’s long-awaited Prime Air drone delivery service. CNBC's Kate Rooney goes behind the scenes of Amazon's cutting-edge drone delivery operation and explores how Phoenix became a hot spot for tech comp...

With over a billion worldwide streams and counting, A R I Z O N A has proven a true planetary phenomenon, creating worldwide waves with their ingenious brand of contemporary electronic dance pop.
Fusing groundbreaking pop technique with creative visual design and uncommon textural depth, their sophomore album ASYLUM sees A R I Z O N A driving their signature approach to remarkable new heights. Multi-faceted tracks such as “Problems” and “Still Alive” reveal a profound and powerful sense of community, fueled in part by the band’s exploration of their own interpersonal relationship.
The trio first came together at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music, their shared interests in production and songwriting uniting them as much as their mutual New Jersey heritage. Songs like “Where I Wanna Be“ soon drew millions of multi-platform streams as well as a fervent online following from London to Los Angeles, Stockholm to Singapore. Signed to Atlantic/APG in 2015, GALLERY proved among 2017’s biggest global releases, now boasting over 750 million worldwide streams. The album showcases a stunning collection of hit singles, among them “Electric Touch,” “I Was Wrong,” and the RIAA gold certified “Oceans Away.”
2018 saw A R I Z O N A return with a string of new singles and remixes, including “What She Wants,” and the double-A sided “Summer Days“ and “Freaking Out.”
In addition, A R I Z O N A can be heard on Avicii’s recently released “Hold The Line (Feat. A R I Z O N A),” found on the late artist’s posthumous album, TIM. The track – which was immediately added to Spotify’s Today’s Top Hits playlist – was met by widespread critical acclaim, with Rolling Stone praising the song as “a powerful confrontation of loss and grief.” A R I Z O N A marked the track’s summer release with a powerful acoustic performance video of the song, dedicated to Avicii.
A R I Z O N A have spent much of past few years on the road, including a sold out series of increasingly larger headline tours – the first of which completely sold-out three months in advance, with some shows selling out within minutes of going on sale – as well as a North American arena tour supporting Panic! At The Disco, and spectacularly well-received festival sets at such gatherings as Lollapalooza, Music Midtown, ACL, Bunbury, Bonnaroo, Hangout Music Fest, BottleRock Napa Valley, Firefly, Budweiser Made In America Festival, and Governors Ball, to name but a few. Perhaps FORBES said it best: “If you haven’t seen A R I Z O N A, you’re missing out.”
A R I Z O N A is: Nathan Esquite, David Labuguen, and Zachary Charles.

CNBC's Kate Rooney goes behind the scenes of Amazon's cutting-edge drone delivery operation and explores how Phoenix became a hot spot for tech companies.
