Stradbroke Island

Stradbroke Island, also known as Minjerribah, was a large sand island that formed much of the eastern side of Moreton Bay near Brisbane, Queensland until the late 19th century. Today the island is split into two by the Jumpinpin Channel.

Indigenous history

Archaeological evidence suggests the Quandamooka people lived on the island for at least 21,000 years prior to European settlement. It was also a traditional meeting place between the Quandamooka and the Noonuccal and Gorenpul people. A 1964 survey found 121 pre-European dwelling sites with evidence of substantial wooden huts.

European settlement

There are persistent stories a 17th-century Spanish shipwreck known locally as the Stradbroke Island Galleon. There exists a body of Aboriginal oral history and several artefacts found in the sand dunes, including a Spanish silver coin from 1597 and the blade of a 17th-century Spanish rapier, but no conclusive evidence.

Captain James Cook made the first documented European sighting of the island in 1770 and named Point Lookout, but did not land. The first historically documented contact between Europeans and the local Aborigines was 1803 when Matthew Flinders landed in search of fresh water. The next documented contact was between shipwreck survivors Thomas Pamphlett, Richard Parsons and John Finnegan landed on Moreton Island in April 1823, before being taken to Stradbroke Island by the natives where they were helped and provided with food, shelter and a canoe by the local Aborigines.

North Stradbroke Island

North Stradbroke Island (Indigenous: Minjerribah), colloqually Straddie or North Straddie, is an island that lies within Moreton Bay in the Australian state of Queensland, 30 kilometres (19 mi) southeast of the capital Brisbane. Before 1896 the island was part of the Stradbroke Island. In that year a storm separated it from South Stradbroke Island, forming the Jumpinpin Channel. The Quandamooka people are the traditional owners of North Stradbroke island.

At 275.2 square kilometres (106.3 sq mi), it is the second largest sand island in the world. On the island there are three small towns, a number of lakes and beaches along most of the seaward coastline with rocky outcrops at Point Lookout. An Aboriginal presence on the island has been long and ongoing, resulting in a successful native title determination. Tourism is a major and growing industry on the island. The island has been the site for sand mining for more than sixty years. Tourism and currently mining are the island's main industries.

Stradbroke (/ˈstrædbrʊk/ STRAD-brook) is a village in the English county of Suffolk. It is in the Mid Suffolk District and part of the East of England Region of England.

According to the Census of 2011, Stradbroke had a population of 1,408, having grown from estimates of c. 1,330 in 2005.

History

During the Middle Ages, the name of the village was sometimes spelt Stradbrook. A prominent medieval philosopher Robert Grosseteste, also Bishop of Lincoln, was born in Stradbroke, circa 1175. The village is dominated by All Saints' Church which has a 15th-century tower.

In October 2014 the Primary School celebrated the 150th anniversary of its opening on 28 September 1864.

The village used to host an unusual event on the last Saturday in July known as Navy Day. This mourned the end of the Royal Navy's rum ration and as part of the celebrations a tot of rum was processed around the village. The last Navy Day was held in 2007.

Stradbroke Island

Stradbroke Island, also known as Minjerribah, was a large sand island that formed much of the eastern side of Moreton Bay near Brisbane, Queensland until the late 19th century. Today the island is split into two by the Jumpinpin Channel.

Indigenous history

Archaeological evidence suggests the Quandamooka people lived on the island for at least 21,000 years prior to European settlement. It was also a traditional meeting place between the Quandamooka and the Noonuccal and Gorenpul people. A 1964 survey found 121 pre-European dwelling sites with evidence of substantial wooden huts.

European settlement

There are persistent stories a 17th-century Spanish shipwreck known locally as the Stradbroke Island Galleon. There exists a body of Aboriginal oral history and several artefacts found in the sand dunes, including a Spanish silver coin from 1597 and the blade of a 17th-century Spanish rapier, but no conclusive evidence.

Captain James Cook made the first documented European sighting of the island in 1770 and named Point Lookout, but did not land. The first historically documented contact between Europeans and the local Aborigines was 1803 when Matthew Flinders landed in search of fresh water. The next documented contact was between shipwreck survivors Thomas Pamphlett, Richard Parsons and John Finnegan landed on Moreton Island in April 1823, before being taken to Stradbroke Island by the natives where they were helped and provided with food, shelter and a canoe by the local Aborigines.
