First broadcasted on April 3, 2010.
Dramatisation of Ian Fleming's classic novel. When James Bond begins his pursuit of an international criminal, he discovers that a daring heist is on the agenda - and mass murder.
Ian Fleming's 1959 novel faithfully dramatised by Archie Scottney and directed by Martin Jarvis. Toby Stephens returns as 007, and a glittering cast is led by Ian McKellen in the title role. Bond and Goldfinger are joined in the famous golf game by Alistair McGowan as the caddie, Hawker. Henry Goodman, Ian Ogilvy and Lloyd Owen contribute to the excitement. And Jon David Yu throws his bowler-hat with deadly effect as 'Oddjob.'
Auric Goldfinger is not only a cheat at canasta and golf, he's also an international criminal on a massive scale. His obsession: gold. James Bond is charged by the Bank of England and MI5 to discover what Goldfinger is actually doing with his vast hoards of gold. Is he somehow connected with SMERSH - the feared soviet spy-killing organisation? When 007 becomes an undercover member of Goldfinger's team he soon learns that the madman's plans are more grandiose than even 'M' could possibly have imagined. CrowdScience’s Caroline Steel is in the hot seat, on a journey where she will attempt to untangle the complex story behind lying.
It’s a subject scientists and psychologists have been studying for a long time. It’s also something writers, philosophers and theologists have been interpreting for thousands of years. But we’re only now really starting to get to grips with how it works as a human behaviour.
There are lies in our folklore, lies in the media and also lies in everyday conversation. It’s something we’ve all had to learn to navigate at some point in our lives.
Our journey will take us to meet the world’s ‘second best liar’, an award she picked up at West Virginia’s Liar Contest. We’ll also meet a comedian who’s proud of the down-to-earth plain honesty of Dutch people.
An academic who has studied thousands of children’s brains will explain when we first start learning to lie. And we’ll hear about new research using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which is helping to show how the more we actually lie, the less our brain reacts telling us not to.
Caroline looks at how lying changes from culture to culture. Do we really all lie? And do we lie in the same way? The surprising and intriguing answer is found in how early it develops in us as a human behaviour.
0:00 Introduction
2:40 When do we start lying?
4:50 From first lies to peak lying age around seven
5:50 Teenagers are the most honest age group
6:25 Different types of lie - white lies to red lies
8:15 How many lies do we tell a day?
10:00 The story of The Boy Who Cried Wolf
12:45 Meet Ariana, the world's second best liar
15:20 How can you get away with a lie?
16:10 What goes on in our brain when we lie?
18:30 Can we lie without realising it?
22:15 Differences in lying around the world

The Medium is the Message
Is the form that you receive a message as significant as the message itself? Marshall McLuhan argued that throughout history what has been communicated has been less important than the particular medium through which people communicate. The technology that transfers the message changes us and changes society, the individual, the family, work, leisure and more.

"I SHOUT At BBC Radio 4 Every Morning!" | Broadcaster Breaks Own Guidelines 1500 Times Over Gaza War
According to The Telegraph's report on Saturday, the BBC has violated its own editorial standards for reporting on the Israel-Hamas conflict over 1,500 times since the conflict began.
This information was uncovered by a study conducted by British lawyer Trevor Asserson and his team, which examined the BBC's coverage over four months on television, radio, online news, podcasts, and social media.
The study also involved a group of about 20 lawyers and 20 data scientists who reviewed nine million words of BBC content using artificial intelligence (AI), as reported by The Telegraph.
The findings of the study revealed a concerning trend of bias against Israel, with the country being linked to genocide 14 times more frequently than Hamas, the terror group targeted by Israel, in the BBC's repo...
